    • Veterinary surgery has been brought to a point of perfection scarcely appreciated by those who do not understand the value of horses or the many and complicated diseases to which they are liable .Among the successful veterinary surgeons of Sarnia lampton county ont. is Dr. Edward P. Westell,who is also the propieter of the Hotel Normandie.
      The Westell family was founded in ontario by James Westell,grandfather of Dr. Westell who was born in 1802 in cumberland England and the married Bell Pringle.In 1837 he came to ontario ,locating at Toronto where for a short time he followed the trade of gunsmith ,later settling on a farm at Humber ,near Weston Ont .
      After a few years he removed to McGillivray township ,where his death occurred in 1875.Politically James Westell was a conservative .To him and his wife were born the following children:Robert now deceased;James a retired farmer of middelesex ; Richard , a farmer;John , father of Edward P.;Pringle ,deceased;Mary who married Thomas Holley;Bell deceased; and Elizabeth who married Quinton McGill.
      John Westell was born in England in 1833 and was four yesrs of age when brought to ontario by his father.While a child he assisted his father on the farm,and later embraced agriculture as his life work owning and operating a fine property in middelsex county until his death,which occured in 1863. The maiden name of his mother was Maria Miller , and she was born in ontario April 14 1836 a daughter of Jacob Miller.At present she .is residing in Almont,Michigan. John Westell was an ardent conservative politically,taking an active role in local affairs.His religious o[inions were in accord with the teachings of the Baptist Church of which he was a member. At his death he left two sons Dr. Edward P. and Parker ; the latter now deceased, married a Miss Goodrich,,but left no children
      Dr. Westell was born in middlesex county Oct. 12,1856, and received the literary part of his education in the excellent public schools of his native place. In 1880 he was graduated from the Toronto Veterinary College , with the degree of V.S. Imediately after securing his degree Dr. Westell settled at Arkonna remaing there however only a short time, as he was appointed by the dominon government inspector of American cattle passing through Canada and placed in charge of American cattle vacination. For 18 years Dr. Westell continued in these offices with headquarters at Point Edward, in 1898 settling at Sarnia where he purchased a livery business,and the Belchamber House. On january 1,1902 however he closed out his livery establishment and sold his hotel ,purchasing the Hotel Normandie, which he now operated as a first class hostelery commanding a fine patronage from the travelling public as well as a number of his townspeople.
      In 1881 Dr. Westell was married to Miss Bell Williamson,daughter of John Williamson.Mrs Westell was born in Lampton County june 18,1856.To her marriage has been born one daughter ,Blanche, now the wife of Frank Mitchell, a business man of Sarnia ;they have one daughter Marguerite. Politically Dr. Westell is a conservative ,and for five years ,while residing at Point Edward , represented his party in the city council, and was also a member of the county council.He is a Royal Arch Mason, and also has fraternal affiliations with the I.O.O.F.,the K.P., and the Royal Arcamum.
