Jehu had a farm near where his father landed [in Newport] & was quite a businessman & was very strong. It is said of him that he carried an anchor for a wager that weighed 500 pounds, 30 feet on a wharf. It was raised to his shoulder, & he walked the 30 feet. Said he did not breathe while the anchor was on his shoulder, & his feet burst through his thin shoes, which were new. This was all the harm done. He gained the bet & lived until he was 97 years old.

* Obituary of sister Sarah A Mother, was born in town of Newport, Haults Co., Nova Scotia, Sept 19, 1828. Her parents moved to Toronto, Canada in 1829 where her early girlhood years were spent, the family moving to Houghton Canada in 1846. Was marred Samuel Carson in April 1857. Lived in Canada until 1864 when they mobbed to Brockway, Mich. where she resided at the time of her death. She was the mother of 4 children, 2 sons & 2 daughters,3 of whom, with her husband mourn her loss, the eldest son having crossed the dark river some 4 months previous. She also has 3 brothers & one sister living, Jehu, D A Mosher of Yale ,Michigan, John B Mosher of Toronto, Canada & Mrs Eliza Monroe of Eaton Rapids, Michigan.
Deceased became member of the Church of Christ shortly after coming to Michigan & was an earnest, faithful christian the remainder of her life. Whole those that are left sorely miss the loving smile, the kind world & the lovely presence from among them they may mourn, not as those who have no hope , but thank god tay through the abundance of His grace they may look forward to a reunion in that city where sorrow & weeping are no more.

. 1890 Sep 8 - Wm Ross of the Fifth ward appeared before Justice Golden Saturday night & swore out a warrant for the arrest of contractor Joseph Mosher, charging him with assault & battery. The trouble arose over money matters. The complaint may be withdrawn & the case settled outside the courts.

. 1891 Mar 2, Mond. - Joseph W Mosher was arraigned before Justice Coumans this morning, charged with assault & battery upon Matthew McNently, who has been working for him. Mosher pleaded guilty & was given his choice between $5 & 5 days. He paid, McNently is the man whose family was helped by the city about a year ago, he being confined to bed for many months.

Funeral services for Harry S Purvis, 57 of 1709 27th St, died Wed. at Jefferson City., Mo, will be 3 pm. Sat. Burial in Glendale Masonic Cemetery. Mr Purvis, an employee of the Cribben Sexton Co., Chicago, Il, apparently was in good health before he left Des Moines for Jefferson City. He suffered a stroke.
Mr. Purvis born in Ontario,Canada, has been a Des Moines resident for 25 years, before coming here from Petoskey, Mich.

A native of fronton, Michigan, Mr Purvis had lived here about 40 years. he was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Niles, Rich, the York Rites & the Za Ga Zig Shrine. Staff Sergeant Purvis was stationed at 345th Bombardment Group, 5th Air Force at Lingayen Airstrip, Luzon Island, Philippines.
He was a Gunner & a Mechanic on the North American B-25 Mitchell Bomber.

Staff Sergeant Purvis was killed in Action at 0550 hours when his B-25 Bomber during take off hit prop wash & stalled while attempting to join formation. B-25 Bomber did not have sufficient altitude to recover. B-25 Bomber was seen to hit the sea water & explode at approximately 6 miles east of Mokmer Airdrome, Biak Island. Mokmer was a Japanese Airfield that was captured by U.S. forces after fierce fighting, Battle of Biak Island in late May and June 1944. Mokmer became the main USAAF facility after the Island was taken.
