"He was educated in the grammar school of his native town; spent some time in the office of his older brother, Francis Hall, civil engineer, and in 1820 came to Canada, with the family, locating in the township of Lanark, then in Carleton, now in Lanark county. His father built the first house in that township. There the son farmed a while, then had a store and distillery, doing more or less surveying at the same time.

In 1830 Mr. Hall disposed of his stock and distillery; went to Halifax, N. S., and practised his profession as civil engineer and land surveyor; returned to Lanark in about two years, and went into the tanning business. In 1834 he sold out; went to Peterborough; started a tannery and store, and continued in trade until 1848, and in the tanning business till 1856. He was the first man who bought wheat at Peterborough, and that sent flour to Montreal and lumber to the American side Albany and Troy, N. Y.

Mr. Hall was Sheriff of the united Counties of Peterborough and Victoria from 1856 to 1863, when the counties were separated, and of the County of Peterborough from the last date until November, 1872, when he resigned.

Mr. Hall represented Peterborough and Victoria in the Canadian Parliament from 1848 to 1852, and in the Dominion Parliament from 1873 to 1878, representing East Peterborough. While in the latter body he succeeded in getting the Trent Canal bill through. In politics he is a Reformer. He has been a town and county councilor, was mayor two or three terms, and in many ways has made himself a useful citizen. He has quite a literary taste; has a library of about 1,000 volumes, including some of the British Classics, and was at one time President of the Peterborough Literary Club, and also of the Mechanics' Institute.

He aided in starting a Sunday school in Peterborough, in 1835; was its superintendent many years, and has been an elder in the Presbyterian church for more than thirty years.

In 1830, Jane Albro, daughter of Samuel Albro, of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, was joined in marriage with Mr. Hall; she died in 1868, while crossing the ocean with her husband and other members of the family, who were intending to make with her the tour of Europe. She left eight children, five sons and three daughters, all yet living. James Albro, the oldest son, has a family, and has been sheriff of the county of Peterborough since his father resigned, and has an excellent record as a citizen. Jane, the eldest daughter, is the wife of Sanford Fleming, Chief Engineer of the Pacific Railway, residing at Ottawa; Martha is the wife of Bingham Higginson, of Liverpool, England; Eliza is the widow of Alexander Smith, formerly a lumber merchant of Peterborough; Frank is a hardware merchant, Walkerton, Ont.; Frederick is deputy sheriff; and Henry is a barrister, both in Peterborough; and Charles is in the Civil Service Department at Ottawa. The present wife of Mr. Hall was Miss Jane Gifford. Ferguson, eldest daughter of Fergus Ferguson, of Edinburgh, Scotland, by whom he has one daughter, Alice Mary, aged eight years."

The "Casey Notes" (Library/James Jeffrey 1835/Item 1, pages 33/4)report the following, paraphrased here:
'James met Sarah when visiting a property owned by his father in (March?) 1859. He had come to "settle an estate on a nearby property." That property was near Sarah's parents home on the Bethesda-Morristown Road, Ohio, called Emerald Hills Farm (see picture in Library/James Jeffrey 1835/6-Sarah Rogers' House.)

James' first visit was only brief but he was so struck by her that he proposed marriage in a letter upon his return home (various letters in the possession of Virginia Kinney). A subsequent visit in July fostered the acquaintance such that they were married in December, 1859.

Initially they lived in Canada for a few years. Sarah visited her parents when Andrew Arthur was an infant (1861?) Sarah's parents visited James and Sarah in Canada in the winter of 1863-4 (US Civil War era). Sarah's brother Hugh Rogers also visited in 1862 or 1864 after service in the Union Army and the death of his brother (Aug 1862) from typhoid while briefly serving in the same army.

In 1864/5 James and Sarah moved to Barnesville Ohio (near Morristown and Bethesda, OH). There James opened the first hardware store (later owned by his Brothers-in-law Thomas and Arthur Rogers).

Then they moved to Mecklenburg County, Virginia where James owned property. James died in a year or two (age 37) when he inhaled poison ivey fumes while burning brush. Sarah brought her children back to Ohio and had a farm near her old home. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church there.'

Mary Jeffrey's marriage to Dr Luther Cross was held at her brother's home in Toronto (130 Bloor St West) - probably the same brother Andrew mentioned in her death notice. (See both notices in Janet Jeffrey Library Item 4, page 25).

Land Titles records in the Northumberland County Archives show that Andrew and Cecilia, in 1876, bought the North half of Lot 4 in Block D of Lot 16 Conc A (and half of the road).

"John grew up in Peterborough, Ontario and became an assistant to his father in the hardware store. There he remained for four years, after which he spent five years in Montreal in the wholesale hardware business. He moved to the United States about 1877 and was engaged in the grain business west of Chicago on the Chicago and Iowa railroad. He went to Kansas about 1879 and settled in Mound Valley where he was engaged in the lumber and grain business for eight years. He came to Toronto (Kansas) from Emporia, Kansas where he was connected with the lumber trade for two years as representative of the firm S. A. Brown & Company. He bought the lumber business of S. A. Brown in Toronto, Kansas[1].

He married Ida in Mound Valley, Kansas and their first child, Fred, was born there. John's younger brother, Fred, had moved from Michigan to Join them in Toronto, Kansas in 1895. The family lived in Topeka before they moved to Colorado; by 1920 they were in Trinidad, Colorado. Finally, they lived in Denver.

John worked in the lumber business most of his life. In 1910 he was a lumber yard proprietor in Topeka and, in 1930, he managed a lumber yard in Denver.

He is buried with his wife and son in Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka, Kansas."

In 1911 he witnessed his sister's (Belle) wedding in Toronto to Wickliffe Greig. At the time (1911) Fraser lived in Cincinnati.

His obit in the AIEE Journal reveals that in 1905, he went to Cincinnati, Ohio, to work for the Bullock Electric Manufacturing Company. When this company was acquired by Allis-Chalmers in 1910, he moved to Milwaukee. He worked on the design of induction and synchronous motors and at one time was engineer-in-charge of induction motor design. He was assistant chief electrical engineer with Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company, Milwaukee, Wis., until his retirement in 1952. He was active on committees and ultimately a life member of the AIEE, American Institute of Electrical Engineers (now IEEE)

Belle Jeffrey's sister, Mary Hutchison, was next door neighbour to William Greig in Westmount Montreal (see Item #3 and 5 in his Library) until roughly 1906. Belle was visiting her sister and got invited across the street to a neighbour's party where William's son Wickliffe was similarly invited. (Oral communication in about 1975 from Eileen Hutchison (daughter of Mary) who was about 5 years old at the time of said party. Eileen vividily remmebers reports of this exciting event.) See William Greig Library Item #5.

Eileen reported that her family rented a cottage near the Greig's rented cottage at South Bristol, Maine, when she was a kid, roughly 1910-1915. See Wickliffe Library Item #9 and William Library Item #4.
