CHANCELLOR, JEREMIAH. "This soldier of the Revolution is buried in a country churchyard at Pine Level Methodist church, in Autauga County, eighteen miles west of Montgomery.

"A short sketch of the life of Jeremiah Chancellor may be found in the Memorial Record of Alabama, vol. ii., p. 895. He was born in England and came to America with his father and two brothers, when sixteen years of age. This was during the Revolutionary War. After remaining a short time in Virginia, the father and his two oldest sons, William and Jeremiah, came to South Carolina, leaving the youngest son, Jackson Chancellor, in Virginia. Tradition says that Chancellorsville, Virginia, was named for the family of this youngest son.

"When the Chancellors arrived in South Carolina they found the war raging violently all around them and it became necessary for them to decide what their own course should he. The father, whose loyalty to England could not be shaken, told his sons that he should join the British; the sons declared that they admired the Americans for standing up for their rights and they intended to cast their lots with the people of their adopted country. The father and sons never met again, but fought on opposite sides until the close of the Revolutionary War. We do not know in what regiment Jeremiah Chancellor served, but Saffell's Records, p. 293, states that Nov. 1, 1779, William Chancellor was a private in the South Carolina regiment commanded by Lieut. Col. Francis Marion, Seventh Company, Thomas Dunbar, captain.

"Jeremiah Chancellor married Galatea Gilbert and settled in South Carolina after the Revolution, where he remained until 1818, when he organized a colony in South Carolina and came with them to Alabama. They settled on the Autauga side of the Alabama River. He remained with this colony until his death. Descendants of Jerry Chancellor are now living in Childersburg and in Coosa County. His grandson, William S. Chancellor was one of the oldest Masons in Alabama.---- Mrs. P. H. Mell in Transactions of the Alabama Historical Society, Vol . iv ., P . 535.

1810 Census: 0, 0, 1, 0, 1 // 1, 1, 1, 0, 1. Therefore, between 1800 and 1810, William lost 1 male child, likely to death, 1 male child who may have married and moved out of Chesterfield County, and 2 female children, quite possibly to marriage, while adding an additional birthed female.

I, Gilbert Chancellor Senior being of sound and disposing mind and being a ware of the shortness and uncertainty of human life do make and ordain th is to be my last will and testament, hereby revoking all other and form er wills whatever heretofore made by me in manner and form following v iz - I give to my wife Kida Chancellor during her lifetime the lands on wh ich I am now living to wit: all that part of W1/2 of SW1/4 of section 32 l ying on the North side of Breastwork Creek; also SE1/2 of NW1/4 and NE1/ 4, SW1/4, and SE1/4 of SW1/4, all in section 32 and in Township 11 and Ran ge 12 ___ lands which I have given to my wife for her life time. I desire at her death to go to my two Daughters Rachel and Sarah Ann.

I give to my Daughter Rachel a negro woman Seavey and her child Lizzy, a nd at the Death of my Daughter Rachel the above woman and child and the ir increase is to descend to my Daughter Sarah Ann and my Son Jackson Chan cellor in equal portions.

I give to my Daughter Sarah Ann a negro girl by name Letty. I gi ve to my son Jackson Chancellor a negro boy by name Nelson.

From census information, it is known that Gilbert Chancellor lived in Sou th Carolina until at least 1804 where his first two sons were born. Looki ng at the census records for his sons, the assumption can be made that Gil bert was in Georgia from 1806 until 1815. His military record is as foll ows: Gilbert Chancellor, Ensign, 345 Dst. Co. (Laurens County, GA) G. M. J une 20, 1812 to April 8, 1814 (Unknown source). His military record and l egal records place him in Laurens County from 1808 until 1816 (Source: Lau ren County Georgia Legal Records 1807-1832, compiled and edited by Allen T homas in the 1980s). The legal records provide the following information:
•In February 1808, Gilbert Chancellor was appointed guardian of Sally Lin dsey. There is no indication of the relationship between Sally and Gilber t. Sally could been the daughter of a friend, a niece of his wife, his wi fe’s sister, etc.
• In August 1808, Gilbert Chanceley was named to work on the road from Li ttle Rocky Creek to the Ichee Trail.
•On January 15, 1812, Gilbert Chancelor of Laurens County bought land fr om Zacra Albritton of Twiggs County. 18th L. D., L. L. #136, $100.
•On July 2, 1813, Gilbert Chancelor affidavit, before Justice of Peace Ne ill Munroe, attesting to the Smith to Talbot land sale of October 1812.
•On June 8, 1814, Gilbert Chanceley of Laurens County bought land from Na ncy Dorsett. 22nd L. D., L. L. #285, $230.
•On August 29, 1815, Gilbert Chancelor of Laurens County sold land to Wil liam Grady of Laurens County. 18th L. D., L. L. #136, $200. Gilbert h ad bought this land in 1812 for $100. The transaction doubled his mone y. William Chancelor witnessed the sale. This William could have been Gi lbert’s father, brother, or cousin.
•On November 27, 1816, Gilbert Chancellor of Laurens County sold la nd to Thomas Hughes. 22nd L. D., L. L. #256, $30 and 22nd L. D., L. L. # 258, $500.
The legal records included marriage records, but there was no marriage rec ord listed for Gilbert.

On August 22, 1818, Gilbert purchased 160 acres in Butler County, Alabam a: SW1/4 of Section 9, Township 10N Range 15 E. He was a miller by trad e. Two of his sons, George and Jackson, were also millers. He liv ed in the Butler County area until his death. His will was dated 22 Augu st 1857 and probated 12 September 1859. All Gilbert’s children are list ed in his probate records. Information in the records include where ea ch child or their survivors were residing at the time of his death.

Gilbert’s children were:
•Reuben Chancellor, b. September 1802, GA, was in Wilcox Co., AL, duri ng the 1830, 1840, and 1850 Census and in Freestone Co., TX in 1870. He d ied and was buried in Freestone Co..
•Gilbert Chancellor, b. September 5, 1803 (see Carter Family Cemetery), G A, was in Butler Co, AL, during 1830 and 1850 census, in Wilcox Co, duri ng the 1840 census, and in Freestone Co., TX in the 1860 census. He di ed December 14, 1885, and was buried in the Carter Family Cemetery, Freest one Co.
•Margaret Chancellor, b. September 25, 1806, GA, member of Mt. Moriah chu rch in Wilcox, Co., died in Mississippi. She married Kindred Hardee.
•William Chancellor, b. 1809, GA, was in Winton Co., MS, during 1850 cens us and Neshoba Co., MS, in 1860.
•George Chancellor, b. March 10, 1813, Laurens Co., GA, died June 1883 (M ary Chancellor Thompson Bible) in Butler Co., AL
•Polly Chancellor Bloxam, b. 1814, Georgia, and married Henry Bloxam.
•Gilliam Chancellor, 1815, GA, was in Munroe Co., AL, during the 1850 cen sus and in Conecuh Co. in 1870.

There has been speculation that William's father's name was also William--predictable--and had a brother Jeremiah. The Jeremiah Chancellor line is fairly well documented. However, William b.between 1780 and 1790 in Cheraws, Chesterfield County, South Carolina, is not. There is a legend that William and Jeremiah had a brother Jackson (of the Chancellorsville, VA fame) who all came over together from England around the outbreak of the American Revolution and the father, being a loyalist sailed back to England alone because the sons sided with the American patriots.

Our Chancellor family traces its roots to South Carolina. Beyond that, information becomes scarce due to loss of valuable records in courthouse fires.

Our earliest traceable Chancellor is William Chancellor, Sr., born between 1780-1790 in Cheraws, Chesterfield County, South Carolina. He was a planter and farmer. Who was his father? The 1790 Census for Chesterfield County in the Cheraw District lists a William Chancellor and a Jeremiah Chancellor. Both William and Jeremiah Chancellor are in the Minute Books (1789-1800) of Lower Lynches Creek Baptist Church, which was located at Witherington Mill on Boggy Swamp in Darlington County .

William Chancellor and Jeremiah Chancellor were in the 1800 Census for Chesterfield County. William's family included five males, seven females, six other free persons (except Indians) and eight slaves. Jeremiah's household consisted of himself, seven males, 6 females, 12 other free persons and two slaves.

The 1810 Census for Chesterfield County also names William and Jeremiah Chancellor with a total of 2,402 persons living in the County.

William Chancellor, James Chancellor and Moses Chancellor were in the Darlington District when the 1820 Census was taken. There were no Chancellors in a South Carolina Census after 1820.

Hopefully, further research will turn up more information on William Sr.'s family.

An interesting bit of information concerns a William and Jeremiah Chancellor of South Carolina being held on murder charges in 1811.

William's wife was Mary and together they had 7 children:

1. Marion "Mary"--b. 1808, m. Samuel Fowler; d. 16 Nov 1895

2. Sarah--b. 1809 m. Pleasant Goolsby; d.18 April 1884; lived in Mississippi.

3. William, Jr.--b. 20 Dec. 1816; m. Amma G. Reavis; d. Mar 1870

4. Elizabeth--b. 20 Dec 1816; m. Young Asbury Allen; d. 16 Jun 1892

5. Harriett-b. 1819; m. Samuel Flowers; d?; was in Upson County, GA in 1850 with 3 children (believed to have moved to Alabama)

6. Nancy--b. 1823 m. John Allen 19 Apr 1838; lived in Upson County, GA; d. ?

7. Gilliam--b. 1824/1825; m. Josephine Reavis; moved to Webster Parish, Louisiana; d. after July 1880

Note that William and Gilliam Chancellor married REAVIS sisters and Young Asbury and John ALLEN married Chancellor sisters. There are also 2 cases of GOOLSBYs marrying ALLENs.

William and his family moved from South Carolina to Georgia and are in the 1820 Census for Washington County, Georgia. His is listed as head of household under 45 years of age with two males under 10, two females under 10, 1 female between 10 and 16 and one between 26 and 45.

A search of the Headright Index for the Monroe County Land Lottery shows one for William Chancellor. He was living in Morrison's District, Washington County, and drew land lot 43 in the 12th Land District, Monroe County. This was on 20 July 1824. The land lot was 202 1/2 acres.

William Chancellor's will was written 29 Nov 1838 and proved 4 Mar 1839. It is our belief he died between those dates. It is also believed he was buried on the Chancellor home place in Monroe County, but no graves have ever been found. His wife Mary was in the 1840 Census as head of the household with one female between 30 and 40 years old and one male between 15 and 20 years of age

WilliamSr married Mary COLE in 1814 in South Carolina. Mary was born in May 1793 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina; died after 1840 in Monroe County, Georgia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

According to the 1866 Census of Butler County, Jackson Chancellor lost two sons in the Civil War; one from wounds and the other from sickness. The only two Chancellor males that would be candidates are John and George. All their other male siblings lived beyond the Civil War. (James T. Snow)

The Oldest Resident Gone

We failed to learn in time to mention in our last issue of the death of Mr. Gilbert Chancellor, an old and esteemed citizen of the county, who died at his residence near Woodland a few days before Christmas. Mr. Chancellor was one of the pioneers of Freestone, having moved to this county from Butler County
Alabama about 33 years ago. He was about 90 years old and was thought to be the oldest white man in the county. He was a high toned, honorable gentleman, esteemed by all who knew him. We have been unable so far to get any further particulars of his life.

Gilbert married Phoebe GRAY on 27 Jan 1827 in Wilcox County, Alabama. Phoebe was born on 11 May 1804 in North Caroliona; died on 16 Oct 1855 in Butler County, Alabama; was buried in Carter Family cemetery, Freestone County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

William and his family moved from South Carolina to Georgia and are in the 1820 Census for Washington County, Georgia. His is listed as head of household under 45 years of age with two males under 10, two females under 10, 1 female between 10 and 16 and one between 26 and 45.

A search of the Headright Index for the Monroe County Land Lottery shows one for William Chancellor. He was living in Morrison's District, Washington County, and drew land lot 43 in the 12th Land District, Monroe County. This was on 20 July 1824. The land lot was 202 1/2 acres.

William Chancellor's will was written 29 Nov 1838 and proved 4 Mar 1839. It is our belief he died between those dates. It is also believed he was buried on the Chancellor home place in Monroe County, but no graves have ever been found. His wife Mary was in the 1840 Census as head of the household with one female between 30 and 40 years old and one male between 15 and 20 years of age.
