    UCLPetition 5, Y Bundle 5, C2980, p381. Yonge Street Impassible
To His Excellency, Governor Peter Hunter,
We the inhabitants of Yonge Street being subjected to such inconveniences by Reason of the Road to town being unpassable for most parts of the year, as to prevent our being able to carry our produce to market, do pray your Excellency to take our situation into your wide consideration and devise some means to enable us to make a good and passable Road by mobilizing an company independent of owning land on the Street, to do his proportion thereof.

Payeson.

. Yonge St., Willowdale. Upper Canada. Jacob Cummer selected 300 acres of land on which he commenced to make a home amist the heavy pine forest. His good judgment was shown in choosing a tract one-half of whose acreage was pine, the rear part of the farm being hard-wood, with fine soil & gently rolling land. The location proved to be a wise one so he built a log house & commenced the labor of clearing off the timber. The earth soon began to yield a good living. Of course the wild animals of the forest gave him as well as all the other settlers much trouble. Bears destroyed the wheat, gathering the grain together with their paws, hugging it & eating off the heads. In this manner a large part of the crop would be destroyed. Then the wolves killed the sheep and hogs & the foxes preyed upon the chickens, lambs & small pigs. However, the early pioneers were diligent & watchful and waged war upon these pests by trapping & shooting. For this warfare they used the old-fashioned flint-locked army musket. Indeed there were at first only 3 of them within a radius of 4 miles.

Jacob's early education was obtained at the common schools & before he attained his majority he became a flour miller, learning his trade at Lockport, NY. For a time he operated the mils at Reading Mills, near Willowdale.

During the Rebellion of 1837, MacKenzie s printing press was hidden in an old dry well back of Joshua Cummer's farm.

"When and why the "K" of the family name was changed to "C" are questions we are not able to settle definitely. An interesting tradition tells us that Jacob Cummer himself made the change because he found it easier to mark his grain bags with a "C" than with a "K." Evidently the change was made before his death. Mrs. Joshua Cummer says that it was during the boyhood of her husband. As Joshua was married in 1835, we are safe in saying that the change was made before that time."

Note: The Cummer Memoranda, a copy at the North York Public Library, 6th Floor, and available also on the internet, is the finest of detailed genealogy to be found. It was done the good old fashioned way of first hand research by Wellington Willson Cummer, Esq., 1901. - P J Ahlberg.

    . Obituary
Sudden death at Willowdale: Mrs. John Wilson who had lived in York County since 1813, passes away.
At the residence of Mr. George W Irwin, Willowdale, on Friday evening. Mrs. Margaret Wilson, widow of the late John Willson.iv, died very suddenly, after a brief illness. Deceased had enjoyed good heal for a no. of year past & the suddenness of the final call was a shock to her hosts of friends. Her husband was on of the best known citizens of York Co. during the fifties, but he passed away many years ago & was therefore comparatively unknown to the present generation. Mrs. Wilson has far passed the four score mark in years, had her 86 birthday was to have been celebrated tomorrow. Her relatives had already begun to assemble from various parts of the country to attend the festivities in connection with the event. [b. 1813].

Mrs. Wilson was born in County York & her life was spend there. For over 50 years she had resided on the family farm at Willowdale, which is now owned & managed by her son-in-law, Geo. W. Irwin. She was the mother of the late Arthur Wilson, for many years Reeve & afterwards Clerk of York Twp. The following children are left to mourn her loss:
John Wilson, Chicago, Egerton Wilson - Cadillac, Mich. Mr. Joseph Snider - Aurora, Mrs. Jas Hannan - Stratford & Mrs. Ge. W Irwin - Willowdale.

The dark grey stone is located at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Plot R, Lots 13 & 14 is located close to the Yonge Street office.
Note: Although the cemetery at Newtonbook would later be closed to permit the widening of Yonge Street, perhaps Margaret had her husband John Willson's remains transferred to Mt. Pleasant to accommodate the larger family plot. Sadly to note also, the elderly Margaret died 48 days after her son, Arthur Lawrence Willson. - PJA.

She was 86 years of age at death & the cause of death was old age.

    . OBITUARY2: 1899 January 1 - York Pioneer Dead -
One of the oldest & best known residents of York Co. passed away very suddenly Friday in the person of Mrs. Mary [ Marg?] Wilson who died at the residence of her son-in-law Mr G.W Irwin of Willowdale.
Mrs Wilson death was totally unexpected. She woke up during the night & complained that her breathing was very labored, coughed a little & died in 5 minutes.
A pathetic incident in connection with her demise is that preparations were under way for her 86th birthday on Tuesday next & her sons & daughters were coming with their families. Mrs Wilson was born in York County 86 years ago & passed all her life here. Her husband who died 26 years ago was one of the largest land owners & most prominent men in York Co.
One of her sons, the late Arthur Wilson, was Reeve of York for a number of years & afterwards township clerk. He took a great interest in municipal matters & wrote several books, his last work being a collection of the municipal laws passed by the Ontario Government.
Other members of the family are John Wilson of Chicago,
    Edgerton, Wilson of Cadillac, Illinois,
    Mrs James Snider of Aurora,
    Mrs Jas Hannon of Stratford,

    Notes:

Letter from John Lawrence.xii to Cousin Valentine Harden Tisdale :

"Dear Cousin, To Val Harden Tisdale, Yonge Street, December the 26th, 1837

I often have been talking about the Revolutionary War, but we have had a Rebel war in earnest. Pappa heard on Saturday night [i.e. Dec 6, 1837] about 9 o'clock that the Rebels intended to attack the City in the course of the next week. He went in early on Monday to inform the Governor who called his Counsel together immediately & said that it was the first information he had received that he could depend on. Father informed them the Rebels might come tonight. Sure enough about 9 o'clock at night they began to parade down the Street past our house. [i.e. Lawrence Ave East & First Con. Yonge St.] We had just got in bed when there came a tap at the Door. When Father jumped & opened the Door there came in a good Tory* saying that the Rebels was all going to take Toronto.

We all muster up directly & went to all the Loyal Fellows that we knew. That night I went out to get another man on the Second Concession West. The Rebels was going down that Road. We laid down by the fence to let them pass. They came within about 8 feet of us where they made a full stop & said this is not the place, turned off to go to Montgomery's Wharf, where they took their Stand. [Montgomery's Ave: Yonge just north of Eglinton Ave. West side.]

That night Father sent Peter & our hired man to 2nd Con to warn along that line to get into Toronto as early as possible in the morning.

Uncle Perine & Colonel Moody called at our house & told Mama he intended to go the Governor that night unless they killed him. They had a guard placed across the Street at Montgomery's Tavern. [i.e. a couple of miles south.] When Uncle & the Colonel came up they Bid them stand, but the Colonel in forcing his way through was Shot thought the Body by the Rebels. Perine immediately wheeled his horse & topped [jumped] over the fence & ran his horse to the Governor's house & gave the alarm that the Rebels was coming.

Father & Mr. Bond was all night along the Street laying by the sides of the fence whenever the Rebels would pass. They crept along the side of the fence until they came within a few rods of the Rebels guard & lay for about 2 hours expecting to get some information respecting their attack, but all their talk was what a fine fellow McKenzie was.

We all returned home just before day & got our Breakfast. On Tuesday morning five of us took into the woods & went up hills & down dales till we came into the City. At the Market Buildings we found the Governor with 2 guns in his hands & the Chief Justice Robinson & all the rest of the Nobility with their firelocks in their hands with their Cartridge Box & Baronets by their sides & a fine lot of Good Loyal men all getting Arms. We all immediately got our Army formed into a Company & marched to the Garrison.

That night Father was placed officer of the guard & the next Morning placed on picket guard where we was kept till about 8 o'clock at night. The next morning that word was for action. Capt. McClain came to my Father & wished him to go with him on the west flank of the Army as he was acquainted with the ground which he readily complied with. When they say the Army coming up Yonge Street, the Rebels ran down in the woods to flank them not expecting that we had a flank of about two hundred men coming out of the woods upon them. As soon as our Cannon began to play in their faces & our flanks on their backs, they took to their heels for their life. We believed there was upwards of a dozen killed & several wounded.

Sir Francis Bond Head led army into action like a Gallant General & when Prisoners was taken he allowed them the Greatest leniency. The Army all marched up above Hoggs Mills & then returned, except a few that pursued McKenzie & took his horse & burnt Gibson's House & Barn. Montgomery's Buildings was all burnt to ashes but we must not forget that MacKenzie began the burning & burnt Doc. Horn's house, or the thirty men who killed one of the Rebels & wounded several others & the Rebels had to retreat.

The Rebels came to our house several times with a full determination to have Father's Gun & Sword. Mama took care to have the Gun & Sword hid. They plundered all through the Neighbours, but all they took from us was one powder Flacks. MacKenzie threatened to burn our house the day the Battle took place.

Uncle Perine was here yesterday & said that all our relations was well up there [i.e. further north on Yonge Street] & Sarah C. is not married yet. She is waiting for you to come down. You must answer this as soon as you can.

The Family joins me in love to you, Uncle, Aunt & Cousins. For John Lawrence."

    Notes:

. 1837 Dec 26th, Major John Lawrence wrote cousin W H Tisdale of Vitoria, Long Point.
Its authenticity is indisputable. the writing is the same as that in the Lawrence family bible, now the property of Mr Sam Lawrence, 92 Roehampton Ave., son of the writer: & the events & persons mentioned are well remember by the descendants of the family. To him it is the vice of his childhood. The family Bible & other genealogical records substituted the authenticity of the communications. "Father would just be about 20 years of age when he wrote that letter, Mr Lawrence told the Star. Mr. Tisdale was a relative of ours & a friend of many years.
And your grandfather, the man who warned the governor of the advent of the rebels. He was Peter Lawrence, but as to the warning I cannot say. All I know is that he took part in the skirmish.
The memories of Toronto's early years. My grandfather drew the first load of lumber by oxen to Thornhill up the then winding trail, which is now called Yonge St., Mr Lawrence continues, I have often heard my father tell of the bears who were won't to come out of the woods and chase him into the the nearest saw mill for you known there were mills practically ever 200 acres, & it was all pine.
Peter Lawrence purchased is property for $8,400, 200 acres of it. His farm & the tannery, the latter situated on the southwest corn of Lawrence Ave, were manned by he & his four sons, Jacob, Peter, Joseph & John. I remember my grandfather telling about a steam which ran close by, where speckled trout were to be caught in abundance. Mr Lawrence anointed. It is just 140 years since he came & blazed the way to his the way to his new home. late on he purchased "Lawrence Castle' from an Englishman who had built it".
And as to the rebellion, family records are rater vague. I do remember, however, that father buried my grandfather's ruffles in the ground. Mr Lawrence remarked & when the rebels searched the house they failed to find them. Then when my Uncle Jacob was returning home with accounts of the rebellion, he was arrested. When I was a boy we sometimes found some of the cannon balls & played with hem. But it all seems so long ago. Sarah C., mentioned in the letter was Sarah Cromer. She was my cousin.

Notes: His grandfather, Peter Rezeau Lawrence land in York on 22 Jun 1810. About 140 years (1789) ago would he find Ggrandfather John Lawrence, UE & Peter Rezeau Lawrence were still in New Brunswick.
The identity of Sarah C. is not so certain: Sarah Catherine Lawrence is Peter R Lawrence 's youngest sister. The Cummer's were related with both Lawrence & Willson's, but known Sarah Cummer birth dates do not coincide or were already married. - P J Ahlberg, 2020.

  21. 34.  Henry Peter LAWRENCE, .ii Descendancy chart to this point (6.Jacob3, 2.Elizabeth2, 1.Jacob1) was born on 10 Mar 1849 in Eglinton, (Toronto), York Co., Ontario; died on 26 Dec 1902 in Wanstead, Lambton Co., Ontario; was buried in Watford Municipal Cemetery.

    Notes:

. Henry Peter Lawrence was born at the Lawrence Avenue farm & moved in 1873 to Watford where he work at the saw mill with his father Jacob & brother William. In 1875 he added a planning mill & then made staves & a heading milling. Additional staves were manufactured at Sutorville, Kingscourt & Warwick, Ontario. After the death of Jacob, the lumbering company was renamed M.A. Lawrence, after their mother.

. Henry was a discrete & generous family man. On December 26, 1902 Henry was taking a train home from Chatham when the train was wrecked at Wanstead, within sight of his former mill.

. 1906 - Henry P Lawrence, Long family bio. 1875 add a planing mill later destroyed by fire, & again rebuilt, later added a saw, stave & heading mill,. Wm. F continued the business & remove to Sarnia.
Commemorative biographical record of Co Lambton, Ont.

. Mr. Lawrence s early education was received at the place of his birth, Eglinton, Ontario. His business career really commenced at Wanstead, where he engaged in a saw-mill business with his father & his brother, William. In 1873 they settled at Watford & 2 years later added to the enterprises a planing mill, & still later a stave & heading mill. They also established stave & heading mills at Sutorville, Kingscourt & Warwick. After the death of Mr. Lawrence in 1902 the firm of Jacob Lawrence & Sons was dissolved & the Watford branch of the business was conducted under the firm name of M. A. Lawrence, the widow of Mr. Lawrence, in trust for the 2 youngest sons.

Mr. Lawrence was a man well fitted for extensive enterprises & became widely known in his line, though this was the result of his personality & not of any especial effort on his part. From the time he settled in Watford he took an active part in municipal affairs, serving at different times as a member of the Town & County Councils & as Reeve of Watford. He never thrust himself forward, but being an able man was looked to for many things & always proved himself worthy of any trust reposed in him. In private life as in public matters he was always a helpful friend, & while he did his duty to the full extent of his powers, he was never ostentatious or anxious to have his kindness known to any but the recipient. A public benefactor in the best sense, he was an ardent believer in temperance reform & took an active interest in the Referendum campaign, not long before his death.

. 1902 December 26, he had been at Chatham, Ontario, & had returned to spend a few hours with his family, leaving later on the train for Sarnia. The train was wrecked at Wanstead & he met death within sight of the place where he had made his first start in life. Being a most devoted family man, his death was indeed a sad loss to his wife & family & many marks of sympathy told of the high respect in which he was held by his neighbors.
