  1. 1.  Mrs. Bildad SIMONS was born est 1777 ± in Pennsylvania; died est between 8.1813-1825 in Trafalgar Twp., Halton Co., Ontario.

    Notes:

    . Place of Birth?
Granddaughter Mrs. Rebecca Lawrence Corrao, says her father Richard Lawrence Jr. was born in Canada & HER MOTHER, Mary Lizy Simons Lawrence, was born in Pennsylvania,
however, Mrs. Bildad Simons had already arrived in Canada by 1804, well before Mary Lizy's birth in 1813. Thus Mary Lizy Simons was born in Ontario.
As well we don't know Mrs. B. Simons' own surname, so it is difficult to verify if she meant her grandmother & not her mother, was born in Pennsylvania, or if indeed another member of the family scrambled the details given to the census taker. - PJA.

    * The Census 1880 Benton Harbor, Michigan, for daughter Mira Lawrence Grow, repeats that her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Lawrence, born 1813, Canada, Widowed, Father born Connecticut & mother born Pennsylvania.
XRef: Further statements, that Mrs. Bildad Simons was born in Pennsylvania are found on the Census 1900 Ann Arbor, Michigan, Granddaughter Rebecca Lawrence Carrso & Census 1880 Benton Harbor & Census 1900 Ann Arbor, MI.

Marriage: Estimated by 1797 - Her son John was born 1798 & son Joseph Simons was born 10 April 1800 in Connecticut, before they arrived in Saltfleet Twp., Upper Canada (near Hamilton, Ontario) in 1804. - P J Ahlberg 2010.

    * MRS. BILDAD SIMSONS
"The white woman had just crossed a fence to enter a lonely part of the woods to pick lettuce when she was captured. It is stated that one of the Indians inflicted one of their cruelest tortures on the poor woman by "Scalping" her. The dear old mother, grandmother & Christian woman died in her agony on the spot & her tragic death caused the greatest grief by all the white inhabitants in the scattered district." "Cecil Hiram Norton told his grandson that Bildad's wife was out picking lettuce with her daughter when the Indians attacked. The daughter tried to pull her mother to safety."

. Family history of the Norton & Robinson relates that Bildad's wife had just crossed a fence to enter a lonely part of the woods on the farm which they were granted, when she was captured*, which might have provided the motivation to move away from their home. Again time & location are unknown.
Ref1. Obituary of her grandson, George Wilkinson of Palermo, died 28 Nov 1916, Milton Champion & Hamilton Spector Newspapers, Ontario.
    Ref2. Mrs. G B (Joan) Hooks, 137 Stewart St. Oakville, Ontario L6K 1X8 (1982.)
Notes1: If indeed Mrs. Simons was indeed born in Pennsylvania, an estimated date of death might be between 1812 - 1825.

Note2: Bildad Simons was at Lot 30, Con 1, Trafalgar Twp.
. Bildad Simons was clearing new land just recently negotiated Aug 2, 1805, the Mississauga Tract Purchase, between the Natives of Ontario & the Upper Canada Government. One could image a scenario of some disgruntled, or dispossessed natives hostile to the new settlers. Or perhaps the murder(s) was related to the reason Simons left their home in the United States.

. It is further noted that family history says that either Bildad himself, or one of his sons* was also shot & killed while riding his pony to a grain mill in Niagara by unknown parties (i.e. Ancaster Mill?).

. 1809 Aug 4, Trafalgar Lots 31 & 32, Con 2, 200 A. each. The 12 Mile Creek runs thou' these lots have waters & banks are reserved by the Indians. When removed [from Crown Reserve Lands.], these lots will be valuable locations.

. 1809 Aug 22 York, Survey General's Office Report: Wm. Smith's conduct, on the New Purchase on the 12 Mile Creek:
Wm. Smith was granted 200 A, by an Order In Council, 5 Jan, 1086. Soon after obtaining this order the Grantee, without sufficient authority, began to occupy & improve a Lot on the 12 Mile Creek in Township now called, Trafalgar & committed such such excesses thereon that the Mississauga Indians, who had not as yet made their Deed of Assignment to this majority, complained thereon & when they, a short time thereafter completed their Deed, they conveyed to themselves the Lands on the said 12 Mile Cr., of which that occupied by Wm. Smith, was part.
. 1806 Sep 8, Wm. Smith was allowed to locate on Lot Number One, Con 3 of Dundas Tract, Nelson Twp. On 9 Sept. Wm. Smith was permitted to locate 200 a. of land in any part of the Province which might be open for that purpose, Signed, Chewett & Ridout.

    Obituary2
50 Years Ago [c1902]. At the home of Mrs Myra Grow on Edwards Ave., Morton Hill, last evening, a party of relatives assembled in honor of Mrs Elizabeth Lawrence, mother of Mrs. Grow who is leaving soon for the home of another daughter at Ann Arbor.
There is doubless not another living resident of Benton Harbor whose life is more closely identified with the early life & growth of the city than that of Mrs. Lawrence, who was Elizabeth Simons, born in Canada & married to Richard Lawrence at the age of 15 years. In the spring of 1858 they came to Benton Harbor & settled on the Major Britain place near Eastman Springs. Mr Lawrence was both a farmer & carpenter & assisted in building the residence known as the old Brunson house, upon the bluffs, now occupied by Mrs. Lamport. This was the first residence built within the city limits. The Lawrence lived on the Britain place for 8 years then moved on the Maher place, 2 miles from Miller where they remained until 1865 when the husband died in the war. The widow then purchased a home of S Brunson, standing where Dunbar's meat market now stands.
Mrs. Lawrence has been the mother of 13 children, 10 of whom grew to maturity, 5 now living. She will celebrate her 89th birthday the 13th August. She entertained the company yesterday with many tales of pioneer days & gave the younger members an exhibition of how they tripped the light fantastic 60 years ago.

    . Obituary:
Geo. Wilkinson of Palermo, Dead. His mother was the first white woman born in the district. Grandmother fell prey to barbarous Indians.
After a week's illness, Geo. H. Wilkinson died at his home on Dundas St, Palermo, yesterday morning in the 74th year of his age, cause of death being Pneumonia. The deceased had been a member of St. Luke's Church, in the village, & his remains will be interred in the Anglican cemetery there beside those of his parents tomorrow afternoon. Geo Wilkinson was the son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Francis Wilkinson, also lifelong residents near the village on Dundas St. He first saw the light of day in the home in which he died, where his mother was also born. He was a farmer by occupation, & a conservative by policy.

Mr. Wilkinson was married in Palermo, where he chose for his life partner miss Maria Patterson, daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Alexander Patterson, who is left to mourn with one son, Morely Wilkinson, a well-known farmer near the village.
The deceased was a most highly respected gentleman, & possessed a very kind & cheerful disposition up to the time he knew that he was about to pass away to the great beyond, & was satisfied to leave this world of wars when the great Creator called him to his reward. The funeral will no doubt be a large one, as Mr. & Mrs. Wilkinson's large circle of friends will surely attend to show their last respects to the deceased & sympathy to the bereaved widow, son, & his family.

Touching on the history of the deceased's ancestors, who had lived around the wilds near Palermo, many thrilling experiences could be related to them, especially at times when they would come into contact with the Indians. One day Mrs. Simmons, Geo. Wilkinson's grandmother, fell prey to a tribe of the redskins. The white woman had just crossed a fence to enter a lonely part of the woods when she was captured. It is stated one of the Indians inflicted one of their cruelest tortures on the poor woman by "Scalping" her. The dear old mother, grandmother, & Christian woman died in her agony on the spot, & her tragic death caused the greatest grief by all the white inhabitants in the scattered district.

In addition other relatives lived in the Town of York. . 1912 May 8. Romance Bared By Marriage License Proctor & Divorced Wife to Try It Again- Their Fourth Experience
When Wm. Proctor walked into the county clerks office & procured a marriage license today he gained a permit to rewed a former wife after an intervention of incidence of a somewhat romanic nature. The issuance of the license marked the determination on the part of 2 persons to strive once more for the happiness which did not materialize during a former experience in wedlock.
The little story of their lives has rather a dramatic setting to say the least. Mrs. Rebecca Corrao of Oklahoma is the other principal in the narrative & becomes the wife of Proctor for the second time. He now is a resident of Grand Rapids two & it is said he intends to make his home there. When the 2 walked to the alter this time it was their 4th experience of this character. It appears that Mrs. Corrao was Proctor's 2nd wife. But somehow their married existence was not productive of the happiness they had hoped for & finally they were divorced. Both decided to go their own way, but fate did not so decree. Both married again & began life anew. Years interceded & Proctor's wife died. Mrs. Corrao's husband died also. Thus did their fortunes run along parallel lines. The 2 once more felt the need of each other's companionship. Their paths of life which were diverging gradually began to close & their second wedding is the culmination. Proctor is 67 & his wife is fifty-seven.

    Forbes Murder
Prudence & Alex Forbes & Prudence Norton 1843:

. 1882 was the 4th of 8 children of John Norton & Elizabeth Clark of Tapleytown, Saltfleet Twp., Wentworth Co.
3 of her siblings, Louisa, Hiram & Demarius married Wilkinson siblings of Palermo, Trafalgar Twp. Halton Co. They were Robert, Elizabeth & James "Andy"respectively. It is family lore that Hiram Norton, the 2 times great grandfather of the author Alan Norton, was a hired hand of Francis Wilkinson & Clarissa Simons & that is how he met their daughter Elizabeth. They married in 1867. How he got to be in Palermo is not known, a distance of 35 kilometers. Interestingly though, Robert W & Louisa N married in 1865. So who actually first made the Wilkinson-Norton connection & where is open to speculation. But obviously there was a close relationship between the 2 families, regardless of the distance which likely took 3 or 4 hours by horseback.

Prudence, the 4th Norton to be connected to Palermo, was married to Alex Forbes about 1864 in Hamilton, Canada West. Very little was known of Prudence's life however, for today's family historians. This all changed very dramatically in October of 2009 thanks to the author's fourth cousin, Catherine Richards of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She was able to determine that a Prudence Forbes had been killed in Hamilton, Ontario in June of 1882.
Further investigation in the Hamilton Spectator archives by Alan Norton at Burlington Library, showed that she had been shot to death by her husband Alex Forbes. He also murdered Prudence's employer George Ralston before taking his own life. The date was 21 June 1882.

From the first article on 22 June 1882 it became immediately apparent that this was Prudence Norton, sister of Louisa, Hiram & Demarius. As stated in the newspaper, Prudence's father John Norton had been visiting her only an hour before & while on his way home to Tapleytown was overtaken at Bartonville by someone on horseback with the horrible news that his daughter had been shot & killed.
Over the course of 3 days, in detail to rival today's sensationalist reporting, the Hamilton Spectator carried the story. On Thursday 22 June 1882 the headline was:

"THREE CORPSES. Horrible Double Murder & Suicide. A SHOCKING SCENE.
In reading the articles, Alan Norton was able to confirm Prudence's family lineage & find information pertaining to herself & her children.
. Prudence was the daughter of John Norton of Tapleytown & had a sister connected with Walker's confectionary store on King Street west.
. Alexander "Sandy" Forbes was the son of Alexander Forbes Sr. & lived with his father in Hamilton until he married Prudence Norton. After marriage, Forbes & Prudence removed to Palermo & carried on a potash factory, which they later sold & moved to the USA. Prudence & Alex Forbes had lived in Pittsburgh & Erie, Pennsylvania. Prudence & her children had left their home in Allegheney, NY as a result of her husband Alexander Forbes' continued drinking & ill treatment. . She had been separated from her husband for about 6 years at the time of the killings.

. The house where the murders took place was on Bold St. at the rear of Central School.
. She had been employed by Mr. Ralson for about 6 months as a housekeeper & nanny.
. There were 3 Forbes children: a daughter Kate & 2 boys Erney (sic) & Willy.
. Kate was recorded as both 17 &19 years of age at the time. Ernie was 9 & Willy 7.
. Kate Forbes was living with Mr. Bateman on Victoria Avenue at the time of the murders. The verdict of the coroner's jury was that Prudence's murder was premeditated. Prudence was buried at Tapleytown.

. DIED, FORBES - In this city, on Wednesday, the 21st inst, Prudence Forbes, aged 37 years, second eldest daughter of John Norton, Esq. of Tapleytown. Funeral will start at 10am from 71 Cathcart street north on Friday, the 23d inst, for Tapleytown M. E. Church. Friends & acquaintances will please accept this notice.
    Ref: The Spectator's 23 June 1882.

In the summer of 2010, Debbie Havens, great granddaughter of Kate Forbes visited the author in Burlington, from her Colorado home. Debbie had been unaware of the tragedy surrounding her 2 times great grandparents until Alan Norton's investigation the year before. The author was able to show Debbie where the murders took place & the locations where the bodies now lay:

Prudence in Tapleytown Cemetery beside her mother & father, while Alexander is in Hamilton Cemetery, in an unmarked grave. From any indications in Debbie's family, her great grandmother Kate Forbes was a kind loving woman but not surprisingly, never discussed having witnessed the violent death of her mother Prudence. The author has never been able to ascertain where the Forbes potash factory was in Palermo & would welcome any information from readers.

  28. 65.  Mary Elizabeth LIZZIE LAWRENCE Descendancy chart to this point (29.John3, 7.Mary2, 1.Mrs.1) was born in 1874 in Michigan.

    Notes:

. 1888 Aug 4 - The petition on which Mrs Desire Rosenbach secured a writ of habeas carpus from Judge Hawes for Lizzie Lawrence, the daughter whom she was accused of abducting from Stephen Austin, was found to be defective & it was dismissed. Another petition was taken out before Judge Baker. The case will come up before that Judge next Wednesday. Meanwhile Lizzie is with the matron at the police station.
. Circuit Court: People ex Rel. Desire Rosenbach Vs Stephen Austin, MJ Crowe, Wheeler Bartram & Officer Kennedy. Petition of writ of habeas carpus. French & May Attys.

. 1888 Jul 26 - Kidnapping Case. Mrs Rosenbach, Mrs King & Mrs Condon are still under arrest for the alleged kidnapping of Lizzie Austin, the first named being in confinement at the Higbee & the others being out on bail. Miss Jane Fleming, aunt of Mr Cook called on The Palladium correct the report that Lizzie was harbored at her home recently. She says Lizzie has never stayed at their house over night, or more than 2 hours at a time, since she went to Mr. Austin's to live; that she has not been there more than 5 minutes lately, & that was last Sunday morning when Mr. Condon brought the child there to see her mother. Furthermore, she says that Lizzie did not go away from the house Sunday morning with Mr. Condon, who remained there an hour longer & that Mrs Rosenbach stayed there all day. Miss Fleming sways Lizzie wanted to leave Mrs Austin of her own accord. The only new development in the case was the arrival here today of a young ma representing Mr Rosebach, the latter, it is presumed, staying away forbear of arrest, although no warrant was issued for him. The girl is believed to be in Chicago but no settlement of the case has been made.
    Ref: Chicago Tribune newspaper, Illinois.

. 1889 Nov 7 - Austin-Rosebach Case …Mr Mrs Austin have all along taken the position that they did not & would not detain the child against her will, but the girl has repeatedly expressed a desire to remain wit them & in the home she had for so many years. What the court will do about it remains to be seen.

. 1888 Aug 8 - Adducted Her Own Child, this is the charge against Mrs Charles Rosenbach.
A strange case of abduction was brought to light yesterday when Mrs Charles Rosenbach was arrested on a charge of stealing her own child forth people who had adopted it 6 years ago [1882] & care for it as their own. In 1881 Mrs. John Lawrence of Benton Harbor arranged with Mr Mrs S M Austin to adopt her daughter, Mary Elizabeth. The child was 7 years old, blue eyes, auburn hair, & altogether as pretty a little daughter as a mother could wish for. The parts went before Judge Leeds, Probate Our of Berrien County & Lizzie Lawrence became Lizzie Austin
The mother afterwards afterwards married Charles Rosenbach, a drug clerk, came to Chicago with her 2 little boys & Rosenbach became manager of Adams' drugstore , 225 Thirty first st. They lived at 3239 Prairie avenue.
In the meantime Lizzie grew into a bright & attractive maiden. H new parents were all to do, Mr Austin being connected with a creamery firm doing a large business. He fairly idolized the child, & his wife grew jealous. In his absence Lizzie was not so kindly treated. She was not abused but received may little slights, which called her so that last Saturday when Mr Austin was in Montana she gladly went with John Condon, her grandfather, so see her mother, who had that day arrived in Benton Harbor on the Chicago boat. then it was arranged that Lizzie should go in a buggy with Mr Condon of Three Oaks, Mich. & the the train to Chicago, where she would meet her mother, who returned by boat. The plans carried out.
The following day Mr Austin returned from his Western trip to find that his pet had gone. He followed & yesterday had Mrs Rosenbach arrested by Sheriff Kennedy of Benton Harbor & Crowe of the Central Station. Judge Hates issued a writ of habeas corpus for the child made returnable Saturday morning at 10 o'clock. In the meantime Justice White ordered that the girl remain in Capt Bartram's care. Mr Austin immediately went to the matron & forced on her more money that she would accept to provide the child with every luxury. They he caught Lizzie in his arms & wept & kissed her again & again. Lizzie says she loves Mr Austin & ere it not for his wife would be willing to go back with him. As it is she prefers to go with her own mother but will submit to the order of the court.
If you are sent back to Benton Harbor you won't run away will you? There was a roguish gleam in the blue eyes as she replied: I don't know what I may do. She is my own mother, you known& I lover her even more than I do Mr. Austin.
Ref: Chicago Tribune newspaper, Illinois &theInter Ocean newspaper, Chicago 1888.8.3.

. 1888 Aug 9 - Life in a Great City, Little Life Austin objects to being sent to her adopted parents:
there was a potable scene in Judge Tuley's court yesterday afternoon when little Lizzie Austin was returned by the court to Stephen M Austin of Berrien Springs, Mich. from whose house she was enticed by her mother Mrs. Desire Rosenbach. Lizzie herself was put on the stand & testified that she wen to a picnic the day of her kidnaping & met her mother's father, who wanted to know if she did not wish to see Mrs. Rosenbach. She said she did & her grandfather took her in a buggy.
"With whom did you go to this man Smith's house?" demanded the Judge. "That I refuse to answer," said the young lady, with cool imperturbability. "You do, do you?" said the court.
"I do," answered the auburn haired miss, with increased positiveness. The Judge had to laugh & everybody else joined in "If I am sent back to Mr Austin's house, volunteered Lizzie, "I'll run away. A ran away one & I'll do it again. I am determined that I shall not say there. "They may tie you," suggested Judge Tuley. "If they do I'll run away just as soon as they untie me. they can't keep me tied all the time." Lizie showed great courage & she did not break down after delivering herself of this fiat.
the case is too plain, said Judge said Judge Tuley after a brief glance around the courtroom. This girl having been enticed from home I have no jurisdiction over her. I cannot go back of the adoption decree. If these people do not treat her well, the decree ought to be annulled, but it must be done by the court which entered it. The girl is remanded to the custody of Mr Austin.
Mr Austin, a small man with long chin whiskers & a nervous manner, had climbed up on the reporters' table when he saw what the result would be. He put his hat on his head & and took Lizzie excitedly by the arm. You giver her to me, don't you, Judge? he asked.
Sit down. Get off the table, Austin, said Mr. Sullivan authoritatively. But Mr. Austin was in too excitable a frame of mind to get down. He kept pulling at the girl & saying, come with me. come with me Lizzie. Not you have got to go. The Judge said so & you must. Take off your hat, yelled the Bailiff to Austin, & then to add to the excitement Lizzie, con whom it had just begun to dawn that she was to leave her mother, broke out in a most heartbroken wail.
Mrs Rosebach at the same time uttered piercing shrieks that ran through the Court House. Lizzie was pulled crying toward the elevator & Mrs Rosenbach, scramming dismally, followed as fast as she could, supported by Rosenbach. At the elevator the mother hugged the girl passionately to her breast & then fell in a dead faint, while the elevator bore Austin, the girl & and an excited crowd down stairs.

. 1889 Nov 15, Dramatic Scene in Court, The case of Lizzie Lawrence, who was the cause of the supreme court declaring that the old child adoption law as unconstitutional, was brought up again a few days since. Lizzie parents separated in 1883, when she was 8 years old, was adopted by Mr Mrs Austin. Mrs Lawrence afterward married Charlie Rosenbach of Chicago. She attempted t regain possession of the child after her marriage & this lead to the adduction proceedings agains her. the Austins refused to surrender the child to its mother notwithstanding a recent writ of habeas corpus to compel them. Lizzie is now over 14 & could legally elect her own guardian. when the justice conversed with her se denied that she preferred to go with her moth & the court for ordered.
Then there was a dramatic scene Mrs. Rosenbach, beaming with joy, marched over to the Austins & taking Lizzie frothier side, walked out of the courtroom, leaving the child's foster parents in tears.
