History of Belwood. In 1854 Mr Skeen built a mill, which was a great advantage as before this the pioneers were obliged to put 50 lbs. of wheat another backs & walk to Fergus or even sometimes to Guelph. When they goat oxen they felt they could with for nothing better. Mr. Dixon was the miller & all the farmers brought their wheat & oats to be ground into flour & oaten by water power.
Mr. Cyrus Sargent drove the mail & stage to Fergus for a time & used to blow a horn all the way down the street so everyone know when he arrived with parcels & mail.
There was a woolen mill where the wall as taken to the mill in fleeces. It was made in a roll about an inch across. You had to be very careful of these rolls. They were so soft & could easily be broken. The farmer took them home to his wife who spent many weary hours spinning them into yard. They made their dyes from different kings of baRk of trees in the bush.

    Decline of the Farm:
. About 1872 agricultural prices began to decline, & that trend continued until the late 1890s. For farmers with mortgages the situation was an impossible one, as they tried to service their debts with declining incomes. Even those who were debt free had a tough time. Their only course to stay afloat was to become more & more efficient & productive. Many could not find ways to cope. During the 1880s some farmers simply gave up, & walked away from their farms. At one point in the 1880s, one farm in 3 in Erin & West Garafraxa was abandoned.

. 1907 Aug 31 - Felker & Rountree of the Indians, are speedy, but are only god for abut half the distance & should be no match for Gauthier & Pitre. The French Canadians are not only faster than the Toronto men, but they can send the pace to the end.
. 1908 Jun 25 - It was a dirty game said Referee Billy McIntrey after the game was over. It was the scrappiest NLU game Torontonians have had the il luck to see for some time, The penalty list was the longest on record. 26 being the total, a total time spent on the fence was 3 hours. …Several are for all fights… players were deliberately smashed at their opponents. Hogan of Montreal should have been arrest on the spot, for there's no reason why an assault such as his on Felker, while neither men were playing, should go unnoticed, simply because it was on a lacrosse field, and not on the street, Six policeman standing around made no move to interfere when the players scrapped. They confined their efforts to keeping the spectators off the field, & they didn't make a success of that. - Toronto Star.

The Montreal Gazette.: 1908 Aug 20, 1908 Some local lacrosse followers seem to have become excited over the makeup of the 'all-star' team chosen by the Ottawa Free Press; John White of Cornwall, far outclasses Felker, who never could stand a fast pace fore more than three quarters.

. 1922 May 24 - The management of the Weston lacrosse team is leaving nothing undone toggle the Weston public awning temperature. After weeks& months of hardworking they are rewarded twosome extant by having 20 players turn out for practice. Every man is able to hold his own in senior company. Their next step was to secure Neil Felker as coach. Felker is not stranger to Weston. He will be remember as the star fielder of that good Woodbridge team 15 years or more ago. The only Woodbridge team that could regularly beat Weston. On leaving Woodbridge, Felker played with West Toronto Shamrocks. He left that team to enter the pro lacrosse league, playing centre for the Tecumsehs. He played at a time when Ottawas, Shamrocks, Montreal AAA., Nations of Montreal & Cornwall were at their best. Neil Felker was known around the pro circuit as the best centre man in the game. He got the draw 90 timeout of a hundred & was an expert at making the odd man on the home. Neil was already made a favorable impression with the players. The public are sure to like him for he does not belong to the clique that dominated across last year.

. 1923 May 9 - Local Sporting Notes: Torontos have been gathering in a tube of dark, unknown players. Everyone is watching this team. Training is certainly hard. Neil Felker is not saying much, but that smile of his is til there & that means a lot. New smiles when things are right, so we know that everything is going along well.

. 1937 Jul 1 -The lawn bowlers are at it hot & have again in the West End & I stopped for a free minutes the other night at Baird Park to have a peek at West Toronto's finest. But one I did now was Neil Felker - the big cigar was the land mark.

He was promoted to a driver on May 16, 1934 & to the rank of captain Feb 15, 1944. Due to a disability, he retired July 1, 1952.

While with the fire department, Felker was active in the welfare programs of fire department service. He was a member of the Wisconsin Paid Firemen's Assn. & the Wisconsin State Assn. of Fire Fighters. He served as trustee & secretary of the Firemen's Pension Fund while on duty here & was a past president of the Superior Firefighters, Local 74. He served as director & financial secretary of the Firemen's Relief Assn.

Olaf Sorenson, chief of Superior Fire department said Thursday, "In the passing of Capt. Percy Felker, who recently retired from the department, I feel a great personal loss. Remberances of My Aunt Marie, by Pat Felker, 2013.
Marie was one of the founding members of Golf & Country Club/Gulf, Curling were she could always be found on Saturdays. For 25 years she had a pair of red front row seats, in the first row of the Maple Leaf Gardens. That was back when you could reach out a touch the hockey players. Later they put in glass walls near the goalie poles.
Marie owned a riding horse which was stabled on the Richview Sideroad. After her father deceased, she had to quit school to support mother & brothers.

Marie was one of the first women to have her own car & was a world traveler. One time she took a trip to Montreal with a couple of girlfriends in the backseat. When they came to a very high metal bridge, Marie grip the steering wheel tight & press on. On the other side of the Montreal bridge she turn round to see why her friends were so quiet & she found them cowering on the floor with the hands over their hands! She also visited Europe, Hawaii & many US cities.

Marie liked to drive a good car & sip on glass of premium Canadian Club whisky.
Spinster. She owned a riding horse, boarded him on Richview Side Rd. Original founding member of Weston Gulf & Country Club. One thing I recall Aunt Marie saying was, 'It's not how much money you earn. It's how much you save." I guess her spending was similar. She would have a few good quality things like, a few good dresses, weekly hair styles, a good car, & an occasional trip to Europe. (Ireland, Turkey, Switzerland). She also loved curling & after breaking her wrist twice, she cut down on the curling! For many years she served tea every week at the CNIB. During the War II support effort she & gramma knitted woolen socks for the 'boys'.

. Marie was a tall, stately lady, brown hair, & dark brown eyes. - One Thanksgiving weekend Aunt Ruby & Marie were at the Erin Fall Fair. On Main St. & the corner of Scotch St. they notice the two story red brick house was for sell. Marie knocked on the door & said her Aunt Ruby had been born in the house. Could they have a little look look inside? The lady with white hair asked Marie to remove her sunglasses. Yes you have the Walker's dark brown eyes, come in. Ruby said the sparse front parlor on the right looked just the same. Over there by the wood stove was were they put the chamber pot, which always froze overnight in the winter. There was kitchen plumbing in the back. - PJ Ahlberg 2010.

. George S Veraden, CCM president from 1941 until 1962. Braden was said to be a "Strict, upright man" who ruled with an iron hand. Having been sales representative for the Maritime Provinces & Eastern Ontario, Braden had been named export manger in 1922 & general manger in 1933. Despite his extensive experience with the company, Braden failed to connect with the workers the way CCM founder, Tommy Russell had. Aristocratic & aloof, Braden was seldom seen on the factory floor. With Canada's wartime economy in full stride at the time of Braden's takeover at CCM, goods were once again pour from Canada's factories. CCM's production of bicycles for 1940 was as high as it had ever been & could have been higher. Braden cautioned Canadians waiting for bicycles not to get overly excited. With the shortage in steel, Braden warned, "Many of our bicycle employees have been transferred to munitions work." ... Geo. Braden retired on May 9, 1958. The new President , M P Jolly was named the new president of CCM & Tom Nase became, the VP.
Ref: Canada Cycle & Motor, The CCM Story, John A McKenty, 2011.

Notes: Geo. S. Braden has started as a stenography with CCM, so perhaps he was sympathetic to the efficient & hardworking Marie Felker, becoming his secretary. Marie had to forgo her yearning for university education, in order to provide for her widowed mother & younger brothers. Marie accompanied Braden to Montreal during the meetings with C. D. Howe concerning the CCM converting their bicycle mfg. into army boot making, machine guns & Lee Enfield refiles for the World War II effort.
Famous Cdn. photographer, Yousuf Karsh took portrait photos of Braden & his wife with their horses. (Richview Sideroad Riding Stables, Etobicoke?) After his death (c. 1958), his secretary Marie Felker was given the charge of looking after Mr s. Geo. Braden who was in a nursing home.
Employed before Marie employed at CCM was Marie's father, John Felker, painter; & also Aunt Irene Walker, bookkeeper & her sister-in-law, Caroline Felker, assembly line
In 1957 Aunt Marie bought her niece, Patsy the best & most beautiful CCM blue metallic three speed bicycle that a child could ever want.
Marie Felker retired from the CCM after the new president wanted his own person to be secretary. - P J Felker - Ahlberg.
