  1. 1.  James GROVER, , The Patentee was born in Jul 1611 in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, Engand; died on 1 Dec 1685 in Middletown, Monmouth Co., New Jersey.

    Notes:

    . Original settler of Monmouth, East New Jersey:
    JAMES GROVER, Patentee, had lot No. 16 in the 1667 apportionment of Middletown lots. He came from Gravesend. One of the most active & useful of the first settlers, he had charge of the early land surveys. He was a Baptist.

    The Christian name of his wife was Rebecca. His death took place in 1685 or 1686. His children were:
    Joseph, (1), who married Hannah, daughter of William Lawrence (she marrying as second husband, 1694, Nathaniel Leonard), by whom a son, Thomas, & 2 daughters;
    James, (2), the given-name of whose wife was Alice, & who was the father of Rebecca, who married Mordecai Gibbons;
    Safety, (3),
    Abigail, (4), who married Benjamin Borden; &
    Hannah, (5), who married, first, Richard Gardiner, & secondly, William Winter.

    The home farm of James Grove the first was at Tinton Falls. This he sold to Lewis Morris in 1673. The family has been largely represented in Upper Freehold, as well as along the shore.

    . 1685 Dec. 1 - In the Name of God Amen, I James Grover, Senr., of Middletown, in the County of Monmouth, in New East Jersey, being Sensible of my mortality & at present of perfect & sound mind & memory, thanks be to Almighty God, Doe make, Constitute, Ordain & desire this my last Will & Testament in Manner & form following, revoking any Annulling, by these presents, all & every Testament & Testaments, Will & Wills heretofore by me made & declared, either by word or writing, & this to be taken only for my last Will & Testament, & none other. I Bequeath my Soul to Almighty God that gave it, & my body to the Earth, to be buried in decent manner & in such place as my Executor hereafter named shall appoint. As for such Temporal Estate as it hath pleased God to bestow upon me, I doe give, order & dispose of the Same in manner & form following; that is to say:

    First I Will that all those debts & duties as I owe in right or conscience to any man whatsoever, shall be well & truly contented & paid, in convenient lime after my Decease, by my Executor hereafter named.
    . Item I Give & bequeath & my will is that my mansion house, my Mill with all that belongs thereto, & all my land lying on the NE side of the Mill Creek, together with all my meadow l& adjoining, shall be divided into 3 equal parts,
    one third I give to my son, James Grover,
    one third to my Son-in-law, Benjamin Borden, for the Sake of his Wife, my daughter Abigail, & the other third part I give to my Son-in-Law Richard Gardiner, for the Sake of my daughter, Hannah his wife;
    . Item all the rest of my estate, moveable & immoveable, both household stuff, tools, implements, cattle, horses, swine, & everything else that is mine, my will is that after the decease of me & my Wife, it shall be equally divided between my 5 Children, James, Joseph, Safety, Abigall & Hannah.
    . Item My WILL is that after my decease, all my Estate, both real & person all, shall be & remain in the possession of my deare wife, Rebecca, for her Support & Maintenance, so long as she shall live or remain a widow, & afterwards to be disposed of as above specified.
    Lastly I doe ordain & Appoint my son James Grover, & my Son-in-Law, Richard Gardiner, to be my Executors & none other, after my decease, to see this my Will & Testament performed.

    . Christopher Allmey was charged with taking a whale on the NJ coast & converting it to his own use. Allmey was found guilty only in matter of fact in taking & keeping one boat load of blubber, but matter of law & costs of suite we leave to yet Court. Jurors: James Ashton, Robt Hamilton, Henry Marsh, Wm White, Joseph Grover, Jos. Huitt, Thos Cox, Richd Stout, Sr., Geo Mount, James Dorsett, John Stout, Chas Eccles.

    . 1688 December 7, LAST WILL & testament of Joseph Grover, Middletown, Prov. East Jersey. Land patent 13 June 1676, to son James. if it so happens that the chyld which my wife now goeth prove to be a son, then I bequeath all the remainder of land; but if it shall be a daughter, than all he aforesaid land, unto my sone James.

    2ndly, Unto my loving wife Hannah, whole & sole command of aforesaid land, until my sone James be 1 & 20 years. The old house & land to his Mother then to James.
    3rdly, Until my daughters, land at Crosswick bought of John Throckmorton & Robt Turner to be equally divided between them.
    4thly, To James 2 cowes & 2 working steers of 4 year; 2 sowes, 2 horses, a feather bed, furniture, an ax &an hoe & plough shere at 21 years of age.

    1683 - He was appointed Ensign in the local militia.
    1686, July 21 - The Proprietors, of East Jersey, granted to Safety Grover of Middletown. 68 acres, in said town, South of his father's land; 32 acres of land, S. W. of his father's land, on the Navesink River. and another piece, of 20 acres, on the East side of Shoal Harbor. West of his father's land.
    1687/8, January - Safety Grover was one of the bondsmen of Hanna Gardiner of Middletown. administratrix of her late husband, Richard Gardiner .
    . 1688. In deeds of this date, he is called Capt. Safety Grover .
    . 1691 Mar 8 or 28 - Safety Grover bought of Richard Hartshorne 20 acres, which, with 200 acres of upland adjoining, was patented, Nov. 23, 1676, to Charles Haynes.

    . 1711 Feb. 19 - Edward Taylor of Freehold, yeoman, son and heir to Edward Taylor, late of Middletown, deceased, sold to Safety Grover of Middletown, gentleman, for £3, one acre, of meadow, at Shoal Harbor. adjacent to the above mentioned land.
    . 1720, Dec. 5. Gawin Drummond of Lochaber, in Shrewsbury. Gent., sold, for £5, to Safety Grover, Gent., and William Winter, yeoman, both of Middletown, 10 acres of his 705 acres, to be taken up in right of his Property, formerly Thomas Cooper 's and which, he, Drummond, bought from Obadiah Bowne. Aug. 21, 1714.

    . 1724 - He was appointed, by the Court, an Overseer of the Highways, for Middletown .
    . 1726 - He was a bondsman for James Grover, apparently his son.

    Mary Grover on 27 Apr 1713 married Capt. David Johnston. Their children are:

    Son, John Johnston, Son, James Johnston, executor, and to have lands at Crosswicks, which were bequeathed to testatrix by her parents, Joseph and Hannah Grover, by wills dated December 7, 1688,
    and May 8, 1690, respectively.
    Above lands, purchased by testatrix's mother from James Johnston, October 16, 1690, on east side of testatrix's husband's land on Doctor's Creek.

    Notes:

    . James Grover, yeoman, took an affidavit, in 1709, that he was thirty years of age or thereabouts, hence born 1679.

    . In his early career, he was known as, James Grover, Jr., but some years after the death of his uncle, James Grover, who died in 1715, his suffix, Jr., was dropped, and he was occasionally called James Grover, Sr., to distinguish him from his own son, James, and from James Grover, the son of Capt. Safety Grover. The simultaneous occurrence of three James Grovers , makes it difficult, if not impossible, to assign correctly to each their special references.

    . 1699 Nov. 25 - Confirmation to John Reid of Freehold, in right of Jeremiah Basse, of the following tracts in Monmouth and Middlesex Counties: I, a lot adjoining Mordicay Gibbons & Crawford; 2, a lot, adjoining said Gibbons, Wm. Jones and Thomas Applegate; 3, a lot, S. Wm. Leeds, formerly Richard Stout junior, W. James Grover junior, grandson of the patentee James Grover, N. and E. unappropriated..."

    . 1683-4 March 5. WILL of Swyny, Swiny, Therlagh, Thurlow, of Middletown; Wife Mary. Son John, under age. House and land in Middletown Township, to go to James, son of Joseph and Hannah Grover, who are appointed executors and guardians, if son John dies with-out heirs. Witnesses: Peter Tilton, William Lawrence Jur., John Fish, Richard Gardiner. Proved March 12, 1683-4.

    1780, July 6 - WILL of Grover, James, of Middletown, Monmouth Co.; Wife, Sarah Grover, sheep, cows and horses, provided she stands by an agreement made between us before marriage, by which she may receive a certain sum of money; and, if my negro girl, Ruth, should return from Long Island or elsewhere, then my wife is to have the use of her.
    I give the use of the lower place to Patience Burdge & Nancey Burdge, daughter of said Patience, during their lives; and the use of 3 acres of salt meadow, which joins Daniel Dalpower's meadow; and, after their deaths,
    I give the same to Samuel Bray and John Walling, deacons of the Baptist Church in Middletown, for the use of the said church. To David Herbert, land on the river, and 2xx acres of woodland, along the line of John Mount. To Grover Taylor and John Taylor, sons of William Taylor, of Freehold, the house where I live, with the land and orchard, as the same is now in fence; also a small lot on the front of the house. All the rest of my lands I give to Samuel Bowne, son of Samuel, deceased, of Middletown, Grover Taylor and John Taylor, sons of William, of Freehold, when they are 21.     . 1683 Mar 5 - Thurlow Swyny, in his WILL, dated March 5, 1683/4, makes him the legatee of his

Catharine Shepherd was a great granddaughter of William Lawrence Sr., one of the founders of Middletown, who is said to have been a son of Sir Henry Lawrence, President of Cromwell's Council, and Amy Peyton, whose family afterwards became prominent in Virginia.
