Thomas indicates yes, 1906-1907, and an illegible location reply for the 3rd part. The reply to the column 18 question as noted above, has LONDON ONTARIO scrawled across the lines for 4 passengers total, including Jenny and Thomas. The other 2 passengers included were Arthur James Beadle, age 32, and his wife Louisa Beadle, age 32, both from Great Wakering. It seems to me that the Beadle surname rings a bell of some sort. It is highly unlikely that these two married couples of almost all the same age, from the Great Wakering area, would be randomly accounted for together as to the final destination of London Ontario.

I do remember being told by someone that the males worked in the brick-making yard near
Great Wakering before emigrating to Canada. My grandfather Fred owned a gravel quarry in
London, Ont. in the 1930s where he made cement blocks, which he then used to build houses.
I understand that he had quite a profitable business but lost most of his savings when a local bank
went bust during the Depression. He and my father built in partnership a number of homes in
London, Ont. in the late 1940s/early 1950s, one of which became our family home. Grandfather
Fred, or "Pop" Lizmore as he was known to everyone, died in a cement block cottage that he
himself had built at Boat Lake, near Wiarton, Ont.

There are only three things that I remember about Uncle Ab: a) he was tall and looked an awful
lot like my grandfather "Pop"; b) he wasn't married at the time I met him (was he ever married?)
and c) he was working at the township garbage dump in Byron, Ont. as a kind of a supervisor.
He had a little wooden hut at the site with a stove and he locked the gates to the site at night.
It gave him the opportunity to sort through the garbage and pull out things of value, like electrical
cables with copper wire cores, which could be resold for recycling. He was the original recycler !

Note 2./ Fred Lizmore and Dorothy (nee Hill), who were born in the Great Wakering / Southend-on-Sea area of Essex County, England and emigrated independently to Canada before World War One, where they met and married.

NOTE 4./ The Year Was 1902
The year was 1902 and America was on the brink of war with Germany over a crisis in Venezuela. Venezuela had defaulted on loans from Britain and Germany and in 1902 the two countries set up a blockade of Venezuelan ports. Fearing that Germany was going to use the conflict as an excuse to obtain Venezuelan real estate, American president, Theodore Roosevelt, dispatched Admiral George Dewey and much of the American naval force to the Caribbean on "maneuvers." Invoking the Monroe Doctrine, Roosevelt made it clear through diplomatic channels that Germany should submit to arbitration negotiated by the U.S. or face military action. Germany agreed to arbitration with less than twenty-four hours left before the deadline; the blockade ended in February of 1903.

In Africa, the Second Boer War came to an end with the Treaty at Vereeniging. The Boers gave up their independence in exchange for a general amnesty, protection of the Dutch language, economic considerations, and eventual self-government.

As the winter of 1902 approached, the United States was worried about having enough fuel. Most homes were heated by coal around the turn of the century, and a coal miners' strike in Pennsylvania had been going on since May. By October the situation was critical. President Roosevelt took the unprecedented step of inviting the United Mine Workers union and mine operators to the White House to negotiate a deal. The miners wanted a raise, shorter hours, and a recognized union. The initial meeting failed to end the strike and Roosevelt had to threaten to send in military forces to operate the mines. Everyone would lose if that happened, and the threat pushed both sides to compromise. The workers got a 10 percent raise and shorter hours, but the union was still not recognized.

An avid hunter, Roosevelt went hunting in November of 1902 in Mississippi. Since he wasn't having any luck, one of his hosts tied a bear to a tree for him to shoot. Not willing to shoot the tethered creature, he told his benefactors to "Spare the bear." Later a popular cartoon depicted the event and an enterprising couple in Brooklyn, New York, created a soft bear toy--Teddy's Bear. The stuffed bear was a huge hit and teddy bears continue to delight children all over the world.

SLOANE, Edith N. - At Grand River Hospital, Kitchener, Ontario, on February 14, 2005, aged 92 years, as a result of complications following a stroke. Beloved mother of Carole Hackbart (William) of New Dundee, and dear grandmother of Melissa Andrew (John) of Kingston, and Joslyn Gaston (Mark) of Waterloo. Edith was a loving great-grandmother (G.G.) and tea party hostess for Jack Gaston, Liam Andrew, and Emma Gaston. She will also be missed by her nephews, and particularly by her caring niece, Ann Landers. Edith was predeceased by her husband, David W. Sloane; parents, Annie and John Lizmore; brothers, John, George, and Bert Lizmore; her sister, Kathleen Wood and an infant daughter. During her ninety years in London, Ontario, Edith was a longtime member of Wesley-Knox United Church and a devoted contributor to the United Church Women. Following a private interment, friends may gather on Thursday, February 17th, 2005 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Reception Centre of the A. Millard George Funeral Home, (located on the southeast corner of the parking lot) 60 Ridout Street South, London. NOTE 1./ Per Bob Millie : During a summer visit with my family to Vivian nee Wilkes Gray, cottage in Grand Bend, on Lake Huron, Thomas Jr. Lizmore and his wife Marietta pulled up to the beach in a huge Cabin Cruiser. He took all those of us who were so inclined, for the hour long ride, into the Bend, for food and supplies and returned us, for a big ole family cookout on the beach. It was a great day, and a wonderful memory. He was a Mason, and just to show you how small the world is, Tom and his wife Marietta, had friends in Cordele Georgia, where I opened a new restaurant. In fact it is where I have my franchised restaurant today. They stopped and visited me a couple of times in the restaurant in Cordele, and during the course of a conversation asked me if I wanted to become a mason !!!!!! I replied that I was interested, but I believe he fell ill shortly after that, which was the last time I ever saw him.
