    Notes:

    "A Westmount Pioneer" (see Obit in Library/William Greig/Item 7)

Lived in Bridgeton Glasgow until 1859 when he went to Australia.

Returned to Glasgow in 1861 to marry Oct 1 1861 and land in Montreal Nov 1, 1861.

Served four years in the Montreal Garrison Artillery Volunteer Brigade at the time of the Trent Affair (a row between USA and Britain during the American Civil War - no actual battles).

Excerpts about him from the Obit:
"- Mr & Mrs Greig became considerable factors in the development of Cote St Antoine into the Westmount of today.
    - A man of vision and his work for many years will not soon be forgotten.
    - Connected with the large foundry business of Warden King for nearly half a century.
    - A sturdy Presbyterian. An early member of Melville Church, Cote St Antoine. An elder and clerk of the session for many years.
    - A member of the masonic order.
    - Typical Scottish Canadian. Upright in all his dealings, alert and vigorous, strong in opinion and of wide reading, he was a type of those of earlier days who have made for us the Canada of today."

Due to ill health in 1910 moved to Baltimore for its more mild climate. Lived at 2000 Madison Ave, at the intersection with Presstman St (in 2018 Google Street View shows this address as the end unit of a 3 unit 3 storey brick townhouse block. Probably the original building, though maybe new in 1910).

William Cowan found (March 19, 2020):
"In the US Federal Census of 1920, three households are shown within 2000 Madison Avenue:
    • The Silberman family of 9 with Tonchum Silberman shown as head of house
    • The Greig family of 3
    • The Meyer family of 2
    • Someone has boarder named Charles Steen, carpenter

William, Elizabeth and their daughter Margaret are shown as aliens with Margaret immigrating in 1907 and her parents in 1910. It states that Margaret is 42 and William and Elizabeth are 82 (John notes that William was 2 years older than Elizabeth). Margaret is listed as a music teacher and for employment as “Own Account” as opposed to employee. Presumably she gave private music lessons, perhaps to kids after school. The Greigs are shown as renters.

Other interesting things about 2000 Madison Avenue that can be learned from the 1920 census. Tonchum Silberman (age 55) is stated as owner – presumably of their third of 2000 Madison Avenue. It states that he was born in Russia with Yiddish as his mother tongue. His wife was born in New York of Russian parents. Tonchum’s mother lives with them and is shown as 82 years of age. It says the mother is an alien having immigrated in 1890. She appears to only speak Yiddish. Tonchum is shown as a manufacturer in the dry goods business and as an employer. Their 6 children range in age from 8 years old to 27. The three sons are all shown as being in the dry goods manufacturing business, the 27 and 20 year olds shown as “employer” and the 18 year old as a wage earner. Perhaps Tonchum was intent on passing his dry goods business to his sons."

His son Wickliffe's Marriage License (Library/Wickliffe Greig/Item 3a) lists William's 'rank or profession' in 1911 as "Gentleman." Maybe that means retired. There is no evidence he attended the wedding in Toronto, though he may have.

Died in South Bristol where he was spending the summer.(See picture in Library Item 4)

Justice of the Peace for the City and district of Montreal since 1890.

Served in the Town as Councillor, Council of Westmount, for 7 years.

Lived at 400 Cote St Antoine ("Ardchoille" gaelic for 'wooded heights') Westmount according to the 1904-05 "Dau's Society Blue Book" found at the Toronto Public Library https://archive.org/stream/daussocietyblueb00montuoft#page/68/mode/2up. Also living with him were his wife, son Wickliffe and presumably his Mother-in-law "Mrs nee Rodger". His son William Jr lived down the street at #326 with his wife.

By 1911 he had moved to 539 Grosvenor Ave, Westmount, accoring to Dau's Society Blue Book 1911

    Notes:

Resided in Cardinal, Ontario when he was married. Returned to Montreal in April 1898.

His Marriage Certificate, abstracted by Janet Gerla April 24, 2018 in an email to John Cowan, says James was a bookkeeper when he was married. Witnesses to marriage in Carleton Place were William Greig (his father) and Alex R Greig (his brother). Both JAmes and Sarah are listed as Presbyterian. Married by Rev A A Scott.

Janet Gerla reports (April 11 2018 email to John Cowan) that he "lived in Philadelphia in the twenties and thirties and owned an antiques/resale shop there. He had red hair."

Living in Philadelphia in 1922 (See William Greig Obit in Library/William Greig/Item 7)

See his grandson's recollections of him during The Depression in Library/William Greig/Item 6

Died at work (241 S 13th St) at 10AM, while living at 7006 Sellers Ave, Bywood, Upper Darby - an inner suburb of Philadelphia 6.6 miles from his work location (See Library/William Greig/Item 8). Google Street view shows (in 2018) a house that was probably standing in 1941 - detached home in what looks to be a quiet, tree lined area.

Worked up to the time of his death after 32 years as an antique dealer (Library/William Greig/Item 8). This suggests that he was in Philadelphia as early as 1909, and might have been the reason his younger brother Wickliffe worked and lived in Philadelphia 1911-13.

James married Sarah Hall GREY on 24 Jun 1896 in Carleton Place, Ontario. Sarah (daughter of William B GREY and Jane) was born about 1870 in Carleton Place, Ontario. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Has a B.A.Sc. from McGill University

Lived in Ottawa when History was written (1898?)

    Notes:

In 1898 he was a student in Arts at McGill University

He was a minister since JG Greig signs on the 1911 Wickliffe Greig-Belle Jeffrey Marriage certificate as Officiating Minister (see Library/Wickliffe Greig/Items 3 and 3a). Also both documents show his location as Cumberland, Ontario on the Ottawa River, Ontario side.

See Library/Wickliffe Greig/Item 2 for picture in his youth.

Lived in Montreal according to the Part Greig History in Library/William Greig/Item 2, but other references (probably later) are to Valleyfield.

Rev John Greig lived in Valleyfield in 1922 according to his father's obit (Library/William Greig/Item 7)

Family/Spouse: ??? ???. ??? was born in in Westmount. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    Conflicting information:
    - Middle name conflicts with Eileen Hutchison's transcription of death notices (Library Item 7) where it says McGowan rather than Rodger.
    - Part History of the Greig Family says living in Montreal (around 1898-1900?)

Only birth record is the Part History of the Greig Family (Library/William Greig/Item 2). It suggest the same biirth date as her brother John - twins.

In 1922, at time of her father's death she lived with him in Baltimore (See Library/William Greig/Item 7)

    Died in Vancouver (Library/Wickliffe Greig/Item 7)

  17. 31.  Margaret Rodger GREIG Descendancy chart to this point (9.William3, 2.Janet2, 1.Robert1) was born on 13 Sep 1877 in Montreal; died on 20 Feb 1945 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

    Notes:

Lived in Montreal according to Library/William Greig/Item 2.

Unmarried and living with parents in Baltimore in 1922 according to father's obit (Library/William Greig/Item 7)

William Cowan repeorts from 1920 Census and other sleuthing:
"Margaret is listed as a music teacher and for employment as “Own Account” as opposed to employee. Presumably she gave private music lessons, perhaps to kids after school."
"Margaret lived with her parents at 2000 Madison Avenue. The US census of 1910 shows a Margaret Greig as a student nurse at Johns Hopkins Hospital at age 32. She, along with at least a page worth of others are shown as boarders at the hospital. We can be certain that this is “our” Margaret because it says she is Canadian and immigrated in 1907 and is of Scottish parents – the same info as is evident when she is living at 2000 Madison Avenue for the 1920 census.
"Given what I next found (1928 City Directory), the stint as a self-employed music teacher as reported in the 1920 census may have been a hiatus from nursing. Specifically, the 1928 US City Directory for Baltimore shows Margaret Greig and Elizabeth M Greig at 1701 Madison Avenue Apartment 4A. The directory lists them both as nurses. If indeed they were practicing nurses, there are three hospitals within walking distance of their apartment the closest being the University of Maryland Medical Centre a 15 minute walk away. Whether it was constructed back in 1928, I do not know."
"Interestingly, Margaret died in Vancouver, BC. This was on February 20, 1945. While I have not read the actual entry on page 15 in the Vancouver Sun of February 21, 1945 because I am not prepared to pay a fee to access it, I do know that it refers to her sister Elizabeth....... The access point through Ancestry.ca says “Residence 974 West 12 m Avenue”. What the “m” is all about, I do not know.

  18. 32.  Wickliffe Knox Luther GREIG Descendancy chart to this point (9.William3, 2.Janet2, 1.Robert1) was born on 14 Nov 1883 in Montreal; was christened on 12 Mar 1884 in Montreal; died about 18 Nov 1941 in Toronto; was buried in Cobourg Union Cemetery, Cobourg, Ontario.

    Notes:
