    1981 Aug 5 - Samuel Horace Jones, 79, died Monday at Lyons District Hospital. Born Nov 24, 1901, at Lyons, He married Mary Vermillion July 10, 1932, at Greensburg. He was the retired editor of the Lyons Daily News & was a longtime resident of the area.
    He was the past director of the Kansas State Historical Society; co-founder of the Rice County Museum; past director of the Lyons Chamber of Commerce; past member of the Lions Club & Kiwanis Club, all of Lyons.

    Survivors: widow, of the home; son, Paul, Lyons; daughter, Mrs Carolyn Sayler, Lyons; 5 grandchildren.
    Funeral will be 10:30 am Thursday at the Sillin-Crawford-Miller Funeral Home, Lyons; the Rev Jay Anderson. Burial will be at the Lyons Municipal Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 pm until 9 pm.

    Obituary 2013 Sep 14, Sat. - LYONS - Paul E Jones, long time publisher & editor of the Lyons Daily News, 77, died Sept. 12, 2013, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born Oct 2, 1935, in Lyons, to Samuel Horace & Ruth Vermillion Jones. He graduated from Lyons High School in 1953, & received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Kansas State College in 1957. A lifetime resident of Lyons, he was the retired co-owner of The Lyons Daily News.
    He belonged to the United Methodist Church, Lyons, Chamber of Commerce, Bell & Star Committee, was the current chairman of the board of the Lyons Federal Bank, was a past member of the Lyons Town & Country Club, all at Lyons, was past president & treasurer of the Kansas Press Association, & the Kansas State University Alumni Association.
    He served in the US Army & the Army Reserves.
    On Feb 18, 1961, he married Judith Ann Jones, in Minneapolis, KS. She survives. Other survivors include: 3 daughters, Cynthia & husband RADM Jeffrey Penfield, USN, Mechanicsville, Md., Bethany & husband Craig Prain, Tega Cay, S.C., & Meredith & husband John Ramsey, Centennial, Colo.; a sister, Carolyn & husband John Sayler, Lyons; a brother-in-law, Richard & Jean Todd, Minneapolis; 8 grandchildren; & a great-grandchild.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, & a brother-in-law, Lt. George D Jones, III, USN.
    Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday Sept 16, 2013, at the United Methodist Church, Lyons, with the Rev. Bill Salmon, Salina, & the Rev. Brenda Davids presiding. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday Sept. 15, 2013, at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons, with the family present from 4 to 6 p.m. Burial will be in Lyons Municipal Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Bell & Star Foundation, in care of the Lyons Federal Bank, P. O. Box 58, Lyons, KS.
