  1. 1.  Caleb BURDICK was born on 09 Aug 1785 in Lanesborough, Berkshire, Massachusetts, United States; died on 02 Jul 1858 in Malahide, Elgin, Ontario, Canada.

    Notes:

    Much of the information on the next two generations comes from the Ancestral File as of July 1992, turned in by J. Colleen Masterson, 203 W 4650 N, Rexburg,Idaho, 83440. His headstone says his age at death was 73 yr 9 m 4 days. His wife, Lovina's tombstone says: "Lovina died 11 Mar 1843 in her 57th year." Caleb received a Court Appointment on June 14, 1814, as town warden for Oxford. He was on the Grand Jury on June 11, 1805 and on 14 March 1815.
    Caleb Burdick kept a minute Book which is in the files of the Archives of the United Church. It says, in part, that he was a deacon of the Methodist Episcopal Church, was born in Massachusetts in 1788 [sic] and came to Canada at the age of 12. His family settled in Oxford Township.
    On March 3, 1839, Caleb wrote "A Record of my Father's Family". He recorded their ages as they would have been on that date, as if they were still alive:

    Much of the information on the next two generations comes from the Ancestral File as of July 1992, turned in by J. Colleen Masterson, 203 W 4650 N, Rexburg,Idaho, 83440. Microfiche # 6050287, Burdick Cemetery Records, South Gore Lot 21, Malahide Twp, Elgin Co, Ont., says his age at death was 73 yr 9 m 4 days. His wife, Levina's tombstone says: "Lovina died 11 Mar 1843 in her 57th year." Their marriage is found in London District Marriage records, 1800-1837, page 1. It says that Caleb was "of Oxford" and Levina was "of Charlottesville". They were married by John Beamer, JP, and the witnesses were Simon Mabee, Abigail Mabee and Silas Montross. Caleb received a Court Appointment on June 14, 1814 as town warden for Oxford. He was on the Grand Jury on June 11, 1805 and on 14 March 1815.

    Caleb married Levinah TEEPLE on 24 Feb 1805 in London District,Ontario. Levinah was born on 10 May 1786 in Saint John, Saint John County, New Brunswick, Canada; died on 14 Mar 1843 in Charlotteville Twnsp, Norfolk, Ontario, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Their marriage was performed by Rev'd John Flanigan, a Canadian Wesleyan Methodist "James S. Burdic [sic] to Eleanor Castrodden [sic], both of Malahide. 19 Nov 1833. Rev. Flanigan. Wit. Caleb Burdic [sic] and William Castrodden [sic], Jr." In 1861 he and his family appear: Burdick, James, age 48, farmer; Eleanor, age 44; Hasrard, age 24, labourer; James, age 21, labourer; Matilda, age 19; George, age 13; Davis, age 11; John, age 9; Elizabeth, age 6; all were born in Upper Canada, and all were Wesleyan Methodists. In the 1871 Census Index he is 55 years old , living in Malahide, Elgin East District.

    A submission to Rootsweb says that he was born in Long Point, Norfolk County, Ontario. The Aylmer Cemetery book says, "White marble on cement base, clasped hands, floral motif: "meet Me": A.D. BURDICK/ 1819 - 1879/ Hannah L./ His Wife/ 1821 - 1912/ - / Oh sacred grave what precious dust/ Is here committed to thy trust/ But oh! the soul has fled on high/ To bloom forever in the sky/ Psalms 23: IV/". He appears on the Index to the 1871 Census of Ontario as aged 52, born in Ont., living in Elgin East District, Malahide sub-district. An abstract of his probate record can be found online at http://www.library.elgin-county.on.ca/history/estate.html . It is in the Surrogate Court records for Elgin County. It reads: "Andrus Davis Burdick, resident of Malahide, date Feb. 5, 1879, File # 772, Elgin Library Film Number 1381, Executors: Caleb Teeple Burdick, South Dorchester, teacher; Hannah Lewis Burdick; Sons: James A. Burdick; Caleb Teeple Burdick; William L. Burdick; wife Hannah Burdick; Daughter Hannah Calysta Burdick."
