  1. 2.  Nancy ROSS Descendancy chart to this point (1.Donald1) was born on 22 Jul 1803 in Cornwall, Stormont, Ontario; died on 18 Jan 1884 in East Nissouri, Oxford, Ontario; was buried in Ingersoll Rural Cemetery, Ingersoll, Oxford, Ontario.

    Notes:

It is our painful duty to announce the death of the widow of the late Robert Cameron, J.P., at the old homestead in East Nissouri, at the extreme old age of 80 years and 6 months. Mrs. Cameron was the daughter of Mr. Donald Ross, of Cornwall, who was one of the original members of the Hudson's Bay Company. She spent her early years in the city of Quebec, where she received her education, and shortly after her return to her home, when she was scarcely 18 years old, she was married to her late husband in Cornwall. She lived with him over fifty years and about 12 years ago she celebrated her golden wedding with nearly all her children to rejoice with her. In the autumn of 1821 she came with her husband to the west and settled upon the site of the present homestead where the family has resided ever since. She entered upon the duties and hardships of her early pioneer life with a cheerfulness and courage that is not often seen in these modern days. She was a woman of many personal attractions and of admirable traits of character. She had strong common sense, a keen perception of right and wrong, great moral courage and firm integrity. She was a member of the Presbyterian church and always manifested a deep interest in its service, and a conscientious carefulness in all of her religious duties. About nine years ago her husband died, and since that time she has divided her time between her sons Mr. John Cameron, the governor of our County prison, Mr. George Cameron of Montreal, Rev. R. Cameron of Brantford, and Mr. W.W. Cameron of the old homestead, where she spent the last year of her life until she passed on to her final rest. With her demise, another of the old pioneer settlers of our County has passed from our midst and of all the number there was none of them who was more universally respected than Mrs. Cameron. On Monday last a very large number of sympathizing friends followed her remains to our cemetery and the funeral services were conducted by her pastor, the Rev. Mr. Cameron of Thamesford.

    Notes:

REV. ROBERT CAMERON, Pastor of Park Baptist Church, Brantford, is descended from the Glenevis branch of the Cameron Clan, and his grandfather came to America from Glenevis, near Fort William, Scotland, in the year 1775. In the contest of the Colonies for independence he entered the Royal army, and at the close of the war settled in Cornwall, Ont. Here our subject's father, the late Lieut.-Col. Robert Cameron was born in 1789, and when a young man went west to the County of Oxford, and began life there as one of its early pioneers, in the year 1820. He settled upon a tract granted to him as a son of one of those U.E. Loyalists whose memory is justly honoured by all Canadians. He married Agnes Ross, a native of Cornwall, by whom he had a large family, nine of whom are still living in various parts of the Dominion. He filled many positions of trust in Oxford County during life, and died there in the year 1875. Mrs. Cameron is still living, and resides at the old homestead "Glengarry Hill" with her youngest son, W. W. Cameron. The Rev. Mr. Cameron first attended a private school sustained by his father, and afterwards, when public school was opened in the section where he lived, he was sent to that with more or less regularity until he was 18 years of age. At this time he went to Starkey Seminary, situated on the western side of Lake Seneca, in the State of New York. On returning home he began to study for the legal profession at Ingersoll for a few months, but at this time his mind was turned into another channel, and after a year of teaching in the common school, his studies were shaped with a view to the ministry, and he preached as frequently as opportunity offered. He prepared for matriculation at Toronto University under the private tuition of a Roman Catholic priest by the name of Morrison. On the Sunday previous to going to Toronto, he was baptized in the River Thames near the place of his birth, and thus publicly declared that his views were in harmony with those held by the Baptists, although he did not unite with that body until a year afterwards. After having entered upon the second year at University College, Toronto, he came to Woodstock to edit and publish The Baptist Freeman, and here he formed a Baptist Church of which he was the pastor. He then re-entered the University and graduated in 1868 as Bachelor of of Arts, and in 1869 as master of Arts. Mr. Cameron then became pastor of a church at Fairport, near Rochester, N. Y., and while here he was married Sept., 186 , to the eldest daughter of the late Rev. Alexander Lorrimer, B.A., Librarian od Toronto University. He remained at Fairport until December, 1869, and then went to England to represent the interests of Grande Ligne Mission. After eight months of constant travelling in various parts of England and Scotland, he returned home and settled as pastor of a Baptist Church on 17th Street, in New york City, and filled that position for nearly five years. While there he assisted in founding the Baptist Union, and was one of its principal contributors until it became an element of disintegration in the Baptist denomination. he then withdrew from the paper, and at the same time resigned the pastorate of the church. On coming to Canada to spend his summer holidays and visit friends, he passed through brantford, and received and accepted a call to the pastorate of the Park (then tabernacle) Baptist Church, settling here as the successor of the rev. John Alexander, in 1875. Under his pastorate the old Music Hall has been sold, and the present handsome edifice fronting on Victoria Square has been erected as a church. While the design and proportions of the building reflect credit upon the architect, its internal arrangements and conveniences exhibit good judgement and taste on the part of the pastor and the Building Committee. The number of communicants and the congregation have been largely increased, and the benevolent and missionary work of the church developed under Mr. Cameron's ministry, ably sustained as he is by some of the most successful business men of Brantford.

  6. 18.  John Andrew DAVIDSON Descendancy chart to this point (4.Christy3, 2.Nancy2, 1.Donald1) was born on 19 Aug 1852 in Thamesford, Oxford. Ontario; died on 14 Nov 1903 in Neepawa, Manitoba; was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Neepawa, Manitoba.

    Notes:

DAVIDSON, JOHN ANDREW, pioneer, businessman, jp, office holder, and politician; b. 19 Aug. 1852 in Thamesford, Upper Canada, son of Isaac Davidson and Chrystann (Christie Anne) Cameron; m. 20 March 1878 Sophia Ellen Hamilton in Palestine (Gladstone), Man., and they had two sons and three daughters; d. 14 Nov. 1903 in Neepawa, Man.

John Andrew Davidson and other members of his family were part of the first contingent of Ontario settlers who went to Palestine, Man., in July 1871. He, his father, and at least one of his brothers took up land in Township 14, range 11 west. In 1873 Davidson served in a volunteer company raised in the area to face a threatened Sioux attack. That year he established, at age 21, one of the first two general stores in Palestine; the other was owned by his future brother-in-law Corydon Partlow Brown*. Like most early storekeepers he accepted grain and other farm produce in exchange for goods because the railway had not yet arrived and marketing arrangements for such products were primitive. In addition, he engaged in the fur trade, in partnership with John Alexander McDougall and “an old Hudson Bay officer, Mr. Mcgillivray.” This venture was short-lived and unprofitable.

Quickly becoming an established figure in the community, by 1876 Davidson was a justice of the peace, a commissioner for taking affidavits, and a trustee for the Protestant school board. One of his most important posts was secretary of the Palestine Baseball Club, for the early settlers from Ontario took their baseball seriously. In 1877 he served as secretary of the committee seeking the incorporation of Westbourne into a rural municipality which would include Palestine. Municipalities were able to offer railways cash bonuses, and the incorporation of Westbourne was designed to induce the Manitoba Western Railway Company to build its line through the area. Despite his work in securing municipal status, Davidson came at the bottom of the polls in the first municipal elections.

In 1880 he left Palestine (which had been renamed Gladstone), and with his new partner Jonathan Joseph Hamilton moved to Beautiful Plains (Arden). On the land they purchased in Township 14, range 15 west, they established not only a store but a new town which was to be called Neepawa. In order to attract settlers, they built – in addition to a brick building for their own store – a hotel, a steam-driven flour-mill, a blacksmith’s shop, and other businesses. The store proved to be successful, as did the mill and a real-estate agency they had started. Davidson became president of the Neepawa Mining Company, the Register Printing Company (which published the Neepawa Register and Beautiful Plains County Advertiser, originally the Neepawa Canadian), and the Neepawa Curling Club. An older Davidson had shifted his interests from baseball to curling, the other great favourite of the early settlers from Ontario. As one of Neepawa’s founders, he was elected to the town council as soon as the municipality was incorporated and he remained a member for the rest of his life. He would be mayor from 1895 to 1900. In 1882 the people of Neepawa gave the Portage, Westbourne and North Western Railway a bonus of $16,000 to have it pass through their town, considerably less than the amount disbursed by Minnedosa, their neighbouring rival, the following year. Minnedosa moved ahead of Neepawa in population and business enterprise until 1886, when the heavy expenses of competing for hinterland trade led to its financial collapse. By the early 1890s Neepawa had outdistanced Minnedosa in size and volume of business activity.

In addition to his local commercial and political endeavours, Davidson was involved in provincial politics for much of his life. An active member of the provincial Conservative party, he was for years a member of its executive. In 1881 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly for the new constituency of Dauphin, a seat he retained in the general election of 1883. Nominated for Beautiful Plains in 1886 and 1888, he was defeated on both occasions. He finally won that seat in 1892 by the slim margin of 16 votes. He lost it in 1896 and failed to regain it in 1899. Although not a member of the assembly, on 10 Jan. 1900 he was appointed provincial treasurer and minister of agriculture and immigration in the administration of Hugh John Macdonald*. After the Liberal member for Beautiful Plains was persuaded to resign, Davidson was elected in his stead in March. He remained at his post when Rodmond Palen Roblin* took over as premier on 29 October. Davidson undertook a thorough overhaul of the finances of the province, and within the first year of his administration retired the deficit that had been built up by the Liberals under Premier Thomas Greenway. Thereafter his budgets showed a growing provincial surplus, created not only by careful administration but by a tax he had introduced on corporations, including railways. His death in 1903 came after a long spell of ill health. A special train was run from Winnipeg to Neepawa, to carry any members of the assembly or the civil service who wished to attend the funeral, which was conducted with full masonic ritual. Roblin himself was among the pallbearers.

John Andrew Davidson’s political career was based on his business activities, which were largely concerned with the rapid commercial development of new agricultural settlements in what was then northwestern Manitoba. His success exemplifies the close connection between rural politics and business promoters in early Manitoba.

DONE TO DEATH BY MEXICAN BANDITS
The very tragic death of Robert J. Swayze

Only brother of Benjamin E. Swayzie of Eastwood was burned to death by Mexican bandits. Victim was born near Kintore, and became a successful railwayman.

A few weeks ago the news despatches gave the story of the death of a man named Robert J. Sweasey or Swayzie, an American superintendent of the Central Railway of Michoacan, Mexico. According to the story told by a Mexican refuge, who reached San Francisco, this man was burned to death on May 16th, by Mexican bandits. The refugee, whoe name was Hansfelder ssaid that the bandits had made demands for money of every American in the district. Some complied, but Sweasey refused to pay. Hansfelder declared that he made his way to Sweasey’s house, three miles distant from his own homoe, on May 19th, and found the house burned to the ground and Sweasey’s body lased to a post in the midst of the burning timbers. Mrs. Sweasey had disappeared and it was thought at the time that she had been retained prisoner and held for ransom.

It now appears that the victim was the only brother of Mr. Benjamin E. Swayzie of Eastwood. Mr. Swayzie had received word from his brother’s wife’s sister in Colorado, confirming the report of the brother’s death. The news was conveyed to her by a letter from her sister in Mexico.

Robert James Swayzie, the man who was thus done to death in such barbarous fashion, was born at the old Swayzie settlement near Kintore, on the 14th day of June, 1861. He was the son of he late Elias Coleman Swayzie and Nancy Cameron, his wife. He was, therefore, a grandson of Lt.-Col. Robert Cameron, and a nephew of the later John Cameron of Woodstock. He received his education in the public schools and Wesleyan Institute of Winnipeg, and when but little more than a boy went to work for Contractor Ryan and placed the steel on the first hundred miles of the C.P.R. west of Winnipeg. Some years later he went south, where he was largely engaged in railway construction, being admittedly one of the best men in Mexico in handling the native workmen. Like his ancestors, who were all United Empire Loyalists, he remained up to the time of his death a British subject. He was a prominent member of the Masonic Order (Southern jurisdiction) having taken the Thirty-Second degree. He was married on the 23rd day of October, 1892 to Blanche Stella Bingham of Windor, Ohio. One brother and one sister of deceased reside at Eastwood, three sisters are at Spokane, Wash., and one in Maine.

An application is being made through M.S. Schell to have the Dominion Government take the matter up, and have the guilty parties punished.

ELDERLY MAN KILLS WIFE, THEN HIMSELF
Calls Police Before Taking Own Life in Calavo Gardens

EL CAJON - An 80-year old Calavo Gardens Resident shot his wife yesterday morning, called police and then turned the gun om himself in a murder-suicide pact for which authorities could find no clar motive.

John William Peiterson called police from his home on Creatland Rd. at 6:30 a.m. and announced he had killed his wife, Anna May Peiterson. He told Patrolman A.E. Benson he intended to kill himself, and added: "Come out and get us."

    MONEY RULED OUT
Benson pressed him for an explanation, and Peiterson replied "Financial trouble." Then he hung up on the partroman's attempt to keep him on the telephone and avert the suicide.

The coroner's office ruled out money as the cause for the murder-suicide, however, after discovering the couple had two sizeable bank accounts and owned considerable property in El Cajun, Lemon Grove, Mission Beach and other parts of the San Diego area.

Deputy Coroner Jess Canale frankly admitted he was at a loss to explain the murder-suicide.

The bodies of Peiterson and his 73-year old wife lay side by side in a bed in the cluttered house. Peiterson still clutched the .38 caliber pistol he had used to fire one bullet through his wife's head and another through his own.

    PATIENT AT PATTON
Deputy Sherrifs, F.J. Lee and T.E. Johnson, dispatched on Benson's phone call to the sherriff's office, found the bodies of the elderly couple at 6:39 a.m.

Canale discovered Mrs. Peiterson had been a patient at the State Mental Hospital at Patton from Aug. 28, 1951, to Sept. 9, 1952.

In her purse he found two statements written to no one in particular and signed by her husband. One dated in 1950, said the couple had been married 48 years and that Peiterson had found her "a helpful housewife and a good business manager"

    EXAMANATION TOLD
The other, dated Aug. 12, 1951, said Peiterson was having his wife examined in the psychopathic ward at County Hospital on orders of an El Cajan physician. The examination, Peiterson wrote, was to be a physical checkup only because she was seeking a divorce. He added that "at no time" had his wife been insane or mentally incompetent.

The couple had lived in the Mt. Helix area for more than 30 years. Peiterson was a member of the El Cajor Elks Lodge and his wife had been a member of the El Cajon Woman's Club, and both had been members of an Eastern Star Chapter.

The bodies were take to Paris Mortuary in El Cajun.
