    Notes:

    Came to Canada in 1825, according to the first (1954) McClure book by T.A. McClure. Rest of family came in 1827. Settled on lot 11, 3d line, 4th concession, Chingacousy Twp. He was known as "Long John McClure".

    John McClure was known as "Long John". The community where he settled came to be known as Mount Pleasant, according to an article in the November 2017 issue of Peel Kinections, a publication of the Halton-Peel branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. Mount Pleasant was located at the crossroads of Sideroad 10 (now Brovaird Drive) and 3d Line in Chingacousy Township. Long John McClure purchased the property on the northwest corner of the intersection in 1829 from a John Peeler. He donated a portion of his property to the establishment of a Presbyterian church.

    Early assessment rolls show John McClure as owning 2 horse, 2 oxen, 3 milk cows and 3 horned cattle.

    Notes:

    According to the book "From "Wolf's Den" to Huttonville", Thomas McClure obtained "Kilcurry Farm" from the Crown in 1832, on Lot 9, 4th Line West in Chingacousy Township. The farm, and an adjacent farm on Lot 10 has remained in the McClure family descendants.

However the book also record an 1839 letter from Andrew to the family from Port Huron, Michigan, recounting his life in the USA since he left them.

    Great Grandmother (Jane McClure) Magill used to drive the oxen to help clear the stumps. She used to go to "borrow some fire" from "Aunt Leezie" (or Lisee?) and Uncle Tommy McClure (i.e. her brother and sister-in-law) on the farm that backed theirs on the 4th line. Great Grandmother Magill walked from her farm to Streetsville with a basket of butter, traded it for chinaware, and carried it home.

    The marriage of William and Mary was recorded in "County Marriage Registers of Ontario 1858-1869" - for Peel County (1861, record 37). Both were residents of Chingacousy Township.

    1871 census listing for Chingacousy Twp. [film C-9957, Peel District (039), Chingacousy (D) subdistrict, Division 1, page 7]. He is listed as a farmer, age 35, Presbyterian. His wife Mary, age 30, is also listed, but no children. An Anne Henry, age 18 is shown as living with them. The 1881 census for Chingacousy shows William and Mary, ages 44 and 41, living with Mary E. McClure, age 14 and Thomas D. McClure, age 12. The 1891 census for Brampton shows William, age 55 and Mary, age 50, living with Elisa McClure, age 24, a lodger.

    In the birth record of Thomas McClure Fraser (1872) her maiden name is Jane Magill.

    In a letter written to Marian (Passmore) Engel in 1981, Lola (Passmore) Falconer described her maternal grandmother, Jane (McGill) Fraser as "gentle and loving and had a good sense of humour". Lola remembered her as being a widow, always wearing black, including a black bonnet. "She was wrinkled, and her teeth were poor, but I thought she was lovely. And she "rustled" when she walked, because our Uncle Searle in Cleveland had given her a taffeta petticoat."

    Lola's description continued: "When I was young Grandma lived sometimes at our home on the farm; sometimes at Aunt Mary's. But when Aunt Annie, Uncle Clure's wife, died and left him with five year old Hilda, Grandma went back to the old homestead which had gone to Uncle Clure [Thomas McClure Fraser]. It must have been difficult for her, I think. I can remember her good meals. She was famous for her strawberry shortcake. I also remember her houseplants flourishing in every window, and her garden flowers."

    Extensive obituary in the Brampton Conservator, 14 Dec., 1922: "..was born on the 5th line west, Chingacousy [3 Feb. 1836] on the farm which her father cleared out of the virgin forest. James McGill and his wife came from Ireland to Canada, and stayed for a time with his friend, James McClure, and on the homestead where the [1922] McClure Reunion was held, his oldest child was born. At the time he was getting the settlement ready for his wife and little daughter, and he is said to have slept in the open at the root of a tree until he got a shelter ready. Mrs. Fraser, his second daughter, was the first child born on the homestead. Only one child of this family now survives, Mrs. James McClure, late of Brampton, who is over 70 years of age. Mrs. Fraser was educated at the famous 5th line school, attended by so many of the children of west Chingacousy pioneers. After her marriage she lived for a while in Churchville, afterwards removing tothe farm at lot 8, 4th line west, where her son, T.C. Fraser now resides. At the time of her death she was staying with her daughter, Mrs. J.H. Hunter, lot 11, 2nd line west, where she passed to a well-earned rest. Mrs. Fraser was a member of the Methodist church and for many years was connected with Huttonville church, valued and esteemed for her fine Christian character and sterling qualities. Her husband died 27 years ago, and she is survived by 8 children, W.J. and Edward, Huttonville; T.C. on the homestead, Dr. J.J., Toronto, and F.S., Cleveland; also by 3 daughters, Mrs. T.H. Reeve and Mrs. A.C. Passmore, Toronto; and Mrs. J.H. Hunter, Chingacousy. Mrs. Fraser was the oldest member of the McClure clan present at the reunion in June last, and it is rather singular that this week's Conservator should chronicle the death of two who were outstanding attendants at the reunion, Dr. W.P. McClure and Mrs. Fraser..."

    John Hunter McClure and his wife Mabel Ann Hunter were second cousins once removed: Their common ancestors were Thomas McClure (1763-1827) and Jean Brown. Mabel's mother's mother was Jane Mcgill, the daughter of Jane McClure, who in turn was the daughter of Thomas McClure. Thomas McClure was also the great grandfather of John Hunter McClure.

    The 1921 census for Chigacousy Twp. shows the family living next to the farm of William's brother Thomas McClure Fraser.

    According to the book "From "Wolf's Den" to Huttonville", William John's farm was called "Illehee". It was on Lot 2 of Concession 4 West in Chingacousy Township, next to his father's farm. The farmhouse was built in 1911. The farm is now a golf driving range. Will Fraser strongly supported the building of a hospital in Brampton, and was elected to its first Board of Directors in 1921.

    On 21 Oct. 1927, William John Fraser entered a declaration in Brampton regarding the birthdate of his brother James Johnston Fraser:

    "Declaration-Province of Ontario, 21 October 1927 at Town of Brampton, County of Peel
    By:William John Fraser (brother of James Johnston Fraser)
    Brother filed Declaration of Birth to "correct" original entry in birth records.

    There is some confusion here, since James Johnston's birthdate recorded in the family bible was indeed July 24, 1875.

    The original birth record of James Fraser is 24 July, 1874 - in Chingacousy Twp., Peel County. The Fraser family bible shows his birthdate as 24 July 1875. A declaration made by his brother William in 1927 declares his birth to be on 24 July 1876. The earlier date is probably the correct one, since it is recorded on the same page as other births, all in 1874. However his WW1 attestation paper shows his birthdate as 24 July, 1879.

    J.J. Fraser became a Lieut.-Colonel in the Canadian Army Medical Corps in World War I. He served first in No. 2 Field Ambulance. He was mentioned in dispatches, and in the London Gazette on 22 June, 1915 and 23 Nov., 1915. He was made acting Major and acting Lieut. Colonel in 1915, 1916 and 1917, and later full Lieut. Colonel. In 1918, he was posted to the Canadian Army Medical Corps Depot and later to No. 4 Canadian General Hospital in Basingstoke, England. He returned to duty in Canada on 9th April, 1918, and was discharged from service on 30 September, 1920.

    "Dr. J.J. Fraser , who is with the Army Medical Corps at the front, has written the Herald-Times from Belgium, giving a vivid description of the Battle of Langemarck. In one 24 hours, the doctor and his assistants dressed over 800 wounded. One he attended was a French Commandant with a slight wound in the leg, who gave him for a souvenir his ribbon of the French Legion of Honour, with which he had been decorated by General Joffre two months previous. He also dressed a wounded Sikh, who made the Walkerton doctor a Prince."

    "A list of the New Year's Honours conferred by the King contains the name of Dr. James Frazer, who received the DSO. Dr. Frazer is a son of Mrs. Frazer and brother of the Messrs. Frazer of Chingacousy. He was practicing his profession at Walkerton when the war broke out and immediately volunteered. He has been overseas since the fall of 1914 and has done such meritorious workthat he was some time ago made a lieutenant-colonel and is now honoured by the King. He has had many narrow escapes, but is still able to carry on. Having won the honours by faithful service he deserves the congratulations he is receiving from old friends in different parts of Ontario."

    James Fraser was seriously wounded at the Battle of Vimy Ridge. After the war, he met and married Georgina McCulloch, who had also served in the war as a nurse, and had also been decorated by the King (George V) with the Royal Red Cross decoration and the 1914 Mons Star. James and Georgina were put in charge of the Tuxedo Winnipeg Military Hospital.

    "Word was received recently of the death of Mr. F. Searle Fraser, aged 65, who passed away on November 20th, 1944, in Cleveland Hospital following a short illness. Born on the 4th line west, Chingacousy, Mr. Fraser attended public school in Churchville and Brampton High School. He taught at Tullamore before going to Cleveland as a young man. He had been office manager of the Penton Press for 19 years and previous to this was with the Office Supply and Printing Company for many years. He lived at 3519 Tullamore Road, University Heights. A 32nd degree Mason, Mr. Fraser was a member of Iris Lodge, the Consistory and Commandery and AI Koran Shrine. Surviving are his widow, formerly Moretta Ostrander, and one son, Lorence W. of Washington D.C., as well as one sister, Mrs. A.C. Passmore, of Toronto, and two brothers, T.C. Fraser of Meadowvale and D.E. Fraser of Brampton.The funeral service was held on Wednesday November 22nd at the Young-Koebler Funeral Home, Cleveland. Messrs. T.C. and Jack Fraser attended the funeral."
