  1. 1.  James FRAZER died on 15 Jan 1835.

    Notes:

A clue to James Frazer's parents has come from recent autosomal DNA testing. We match on a portion of chromosome 12 with a group of people who are known to descend from Richard Frazer, born ca. 1777 [ a relevant blog is at http://www.jmhartley.com/HBlog/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Archibald-Line-Chart.jpg]. This Frazer line was in Aghrafinigan in County Roscommon. Richard Frazer had several children, including a James, of whom no data is presently known. More is known about some of Richard's other children and their descendants. Richard's parents are said to be Archibald Frazer (ca. 1743) and Mary Lilley. A web page of Frazer ancestors is at http://jmhartley.com/Frazer/frazerupd0001.htm.

The names and birthdates of the children of James and Elizabeth Frazer are taken from their son John's family bible. On another page of the same bible is the inscription " James Frazer Departed this Life January the 15th 1835."

That bible also had a page with the following:
"Mary Ann Caruthers, her book dated this 18th day of July, 1836",
    and on another page:
    "Sarah Caruther, Robert Caruthers".

A James Frazer is listed as occupying lot 23, concession VI (west side of Huron St.) in the 1843 Chingacousy Township assessment roll, according to the book "people of Peel".

    Notes:

Sarah's birth date was given in the 1901 census as 6 June 1826. Her year of immigration was given as 1844.

Sarah's obituary in the Aug. 14, 1920 edition of the Toronto Daily Star:
"There died at her late residence, 114 Delaware Avenue, a resident of Toronto for about 75 years, Mrs. Sarah Cassidy. Mrs. Cassidy was the widow of the late William Cassidy, who was the first W.M. of King Solomon's Lodge, A.F. and A.M., Toronto. She was favoured with good health until about three weeks ago, when she fell and fractured her wrist, and was unable to withstand the shock. She leaves one son, Solomon, of the Globe, and one daughter, Mrs. George W. Sharp, Delaware Avenue.
Mrs. William Cassidy was born in Tempo, Fermanaugh County, Ireland, June 6, 1826. She was the last surviving member of the family of James and Bessie Fraser, of Tempo, and on the death of her parents emigrated to Canada at an early age. After a brief residence in Quebec and Montreal she located in Toronto, where she has since resided."

    Notes:

Residing in Churchville, Ont. in 1858. Halton County marriage register entry: "John Frazer, 26, Churchville, Ireland, s/o James and Elizabeth, married 7 Jan. 1858 Jane McGill, 21, Chingacousy, d/o James and Jane."

The names and birthdates of John's siblings, in the Fraser family bible (see under his father James Frazer), include his sister Sarah. Sarah's 1920 obituary, which includes her parents' names, says that she and her siblings were born in Tempo, County Fermanaugh. From this we may infer that John too was born in Tempo. Tempo is in the Parish of Inniskillen.

The book "From Wolf's Den" to Huttonville", compiled by the Huttonville Book Committee in 1996 summarizes the history of John Fraser and his family and descendants. He arrived in Canada from Enniskillen, in County Fermanagh, Ireland, at age 16 (ca. 1848), with two of his sisters. The Irish potato famine was at its height in 1848, and may have been the reason for his emigration.

John was a skilled carpenter, and built homes and barns in the Huttonville and Churchville areas.

The birthdates and death dates of the children of John Fraser and Jane McGill were taken from a Fraser family bible, transcribed by Lola Passmore.

1861 Toronto Twp. (Peel County) census listing:

According to the wedding invitation for their daughter Ella, the Frasers' residence was "Maple Grove Farm", Huttonville. The 1877 Ontario atlas for Southern Chingacousy Twp. shows his 100-acre farm at Lot 3 in the 4th concession west, just southeast of Huttonville, and just northwest of Churchville, which was in Toronto Twp. Other farms nearby included many McClures, James Magill, several Laidlaws and Ostranders, as well as a Hunter. The farmhouse was demolished in 1990, and Fraser's farm is now part of the Lionhead Golf and Country Club.

Obituary in "Peel Banner", Aug. 16, 1895:
"The death of Mr. John Fraser last Wednesday morning has cast a shadow over the entire neighbourhood. He was only in bed a week but sank gradually every day. His cheerful face will be missed in this community for a long time. He has been almost a constant invalid for quite a few years, but was always cheerful and uncomplaining. Even when on his death-bed he tried to make himself as little trouble to anyone as he could possibly help. The sorrow-stricken family have the heart-felt sympathy of the entire neighbourhood in their hour of trouble. He leaves behind him the record of an honourable and upright life and an unblemished name."

    Churchville Cemetery inscription:
"John Fraser, born Feb. 19, 1832, died Aug. 14, 1895

The 1921 census for Chigacousy Twp. shows the family living next to the farm of William's brother Thomas McClure Fraser.

According to the book "From "Wolf's Den" to Huttonville", William John's farm was called "Illehee". It was on Lot 2 of Concession 4 West in Chingacousy Township, next to his father's farm. The farmhouse was built in 1911. The farm is now a golf driving range. Will Fraser strongly supported the building of a hospital in Brampton, and was elected to its first Board of Directors in 1921.

On 21 Oct. 1927, William John Fraser entered a declaration in Brampton regarding the birthdate of his brother James Johnston Fraser:

"Declaration-Province of Ontario, 21 October 1927 at Town of Brampton, County of Peel
By:William John Fraser (brother of James Johnston Fraser)
Brother filed Declaration of Birth to "correct" original entry in birth records.

    Notes:

The original birth record of James Fraser is 24 July, 1874 - in Chingacousy Twp., Peel County. The Fraser family bible shows his birthdate as 24 July 1875. A declaration made by his brother William in 1927 declares his birth to be on 24 July 1876. The earlier date is probably the correct one, since it is recorded on the same page as other births, all in 1874. However his WW1 attestation paper shows his birthdate as 24 July, 1879.

J.J. Fraser became a Lieut.-Colonel in the Canadian Army Medical Corps in World War I. He served first in No. 2 Field Ambulance. He was mentioned in dispatches, and in the London Gazette on 22 June, 1915 and 23 Nov., 1915. He was made acting Major and acting Lieut. Colonel in 1915, 1916 and 1917, and later full Lieut. Colonel. In 1918, he was posted to the Canadian Army Medical Corps Depot and later to No. 4 Canadian General Hospital in Basingstoke, England. He returned to duty in Canada on 9th April, 1918, and was discharged from service on 30 September, 1920.

From the Walkerton Herald and Times:
"Dr. J.J. Fraser , who is with the Army Medical Corps at the front, has written the Herald-Times from Belgium, giving a vivid description of the Battle of Langemarck. In one 24 hours, the doctor and his assistants dressed over 800 wounded. One he attended was a French Commandant with a slight wound in the leg, who gave him for a souvenir his ribbon of the French Legion of Honour, with which he had been decorated by General Joffre two months previous. He also dressed a wounded Sikh, who made the Walkerton doctor a Prince."

    Also:
"A list of the New Year's Honours conferred by the King contains the name of Dr. James Frazer, who received the DSO. Dr. Frazer is a son of Mrs. Frazer and brother of the Messrs. Frazer of Chingacousy. He was practicing his profession at Walkerton when the war broke out and immediately volunteered. He has been overseas since the fall of 1914 and has done such meritorious workthat he was some time ago made a lieutenant-colonel and is now honoured by the King. He has had many narrow escapes, but is still able to carry on. Having won the honours by faithful service he deserves the congratulations he is receiving from old friends in different parts of Ontario."

James Fraser was seriously wounded at the Battle of Vimy Ridge. After the war, he met and married Georgina McCulloch, who had also served in the war as a nurse, and had also been decorated by the King (George V) with the Royal Red Cross decoration and the 1914 Mons Star. Notes:

In his WW1 Attestation Paper, filled out on Sept. 10, 1915, Fred lists the current address of his parents as RR2, Norval, Halton County, Ontario.

Fred Passmore joined the Royal Canadian Dragoons and then the Fort Garry Horse, which were part of the Canadian Cavalry Brigade in World War 1. For most of the war, the Brigade fought as infantry. According to his military record [RG150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box 7623-30], he landed in France on Feb. 25, 1916. He was promoted from private to Lance Corporal on May 21, 1917.

On Aug. 10, 1917, he transferred to the School of Military Aeronautics, part of the British Royal Flying Corps (RFC), which later became the Royal Air Force (RAF)). He was formally discharged from the Fort Garry Horse on Nov. 12, 1917 to join the RFC. He trained and spent the rest of the war as a RFC fighter pilot. His RFC military record contained in "Nominal Roll of Canadian Airmen Serving in the RFC and RAF N to R"( held at Library and Archives Canada), shows that he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 27 September 1917, and then Lieutenant on 1 April, 1918. He served in the 24th Squadron of the RAF from 29 May 1918 to 20 November 1918, and was transferred to H.Q. Wing on 20 January, 1919. 24 Squadron, formed in 1915, was flying SE5a fighter planes in 1918. This was arguably the best and fastest single-seat fighter aircraft possesed by the Allies in WW1.

"A History of 24 Squadron" by A.F. Illingworth [reprinted by Naval and Military Press in association with the Imperial war Museum] stated that it flew mostly air combat missions (attacking German fighter planes which were trying to attack Allied reconnaissance and artillery spotter aircraft), plus some ground attack missions. Between 1915 and 1918 it accounted for 200 downed enemy planes. The book credits Fred Passmore, along with fellow pilots in "B" Flight, with forcing an enemy plane to land on an Alied airfield on 26 July, 1918. It also credits him and another pilot with damaging and driving down another enemy plane on 27 June, 1918.

Fred returned to Canada (his parents house at 83 Brunswick ave., Toronto) in 1919.

Fred was the first in his family to acquire a car, and worked in Toronto for a few years as an auto mechanic. Later he became a high school teacher of auto mechanics. The family lived at various times in London, Ontario, Port Arthur, Brantford, Galt, Hamilton and Sarnia.

A reference letter for Fred was found in Passmore family files:

    "Tottenham, Ontario, Canada
    To whom it may concern:
This is to certify that from July 1st 1910 to June 30th 1914 I was pastor of the church where Mr. Fred Passmore and his people attended service. I know the family intimately, as every member of it was a member of my church. Fred's Father and Mother were both leaders in our church work. He comes from one of our best Canadian homes, and was himself a leader in our young peoples' society. I never knew anything small or mean about Fred Passmore. I feel there cannot be any doubt of his loyalty and trustworthiness. I am sure if he is given a work of responsibility and trust that up to the measure of his ability - he will make good. I recommend him most heartily. He is worthy.
    Sincerely
    C. Atherton Belfry
    Methodist minister
    Tottenham, Ontario, Canada

The letter is undated. It may have been written in the early 1920s when Fred was seeking work after the war. Or it may have been written during the war when Fred was applying to join the Royal Flying Corps.

During the first world war, she corresponded with several soldiers serving in France who were from her Huttonville high school class. Letters to her from these soldiers have been preserved. Her most frequent correspondent, from the time he enlisted in 1915 until his death on May 9, 1917 (missing in action, presumed dead) was George H. Tripp.

She lived with her great aunt Mary Ann Passmore, and her parents at 83 Brunswick Avenue in Toronto, fromm 1916 to 1934.

Lola's diaries, up to the late 1930's have been preserved. Until her marriage, she lived with her parents, enjoyed a very active social life, and was also very active in her church. During the 1920s and 1930s, she had many suitors, and more than one marriage proposal. She likely broke a few male hearts. With friends, she travelled to Europe in the summer of 1930. She also travelled to parts of the eastern USA during summers in the 1920s. She travelled later to Bermuda.

Lola's first mention in her diary of Ray Falconer was in December of 1927. She did not say how they met, but it might have been through Ray's cousin Marjorie Hopper, who lived up the street from Lola's family on Brunswick Avenue in Toronto.

J.M. Fraser was known as "Jack" Fraser. Obituary in "The Daily Times" of Brampton, Ontario, Dec. 27, 1979:

FORMER CNE PRESIDENT DIES HERE AT AGE 75

Services were held today for one of Canada's top agriculturalists, known to many as "Mr. CNE". J.M. (Jack) Fraser died of cancer in Peel Memorial after a lengthy illness. He was 75.
Mr. Fraser was a top cattle breeder, held many positions in agricultural and community organizations, served in local politics and earned scores of honours.
He sat on the executive board of the Canadian National Exhibition for several years, and was CNE presiident in 1963 and 1964.
"Being named president of the CNE," he once said, "was the greatest honour I have ever had."
Another significant honour was achieved in November 1975 when he was named to the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame. He also received a master breeder shield from the Holstein-Friesian Association of Canada, which he served as president in 1948 and 1949.
Born in Streetsville, he was the third generation of Frasers to farm in this area. After attending Churchville public school and Brampton high school, he purchased Spring Farm on Mississauga Road in 1928 at age 23, and through the years bred many renowned animals.
"Wherever you find Canadian Holsteins the world over, you will find pedigrees or cattle tracing back to Spring Farm," the Ontario Agricultural College said in 1974 when it awarded Mr. Fraser an OAC Centennial medal.
Mr. Fraser gained worldwide recognition as a judge at Holstein-Friesian shows, and judged competitions on four continents in countries like Mexico, Australia, England and Argentina.
"The Holstein," he said in 1975, "is the best breed in the world. I have been all over the world, and Canada has the best."
For at least 30 years, his herd was used extensively for the training of dairy cattle judging teams and for the teaching of agricultural students in general.
His herd won more premier breeder and exhibitor awards at the CNE than any other herd. In 1951 he won the premier breeder shield at the International Dairy Exposition in the U.S., despite entering only six head of cattle.
Among other awards were a plaque from the Agricultural Institute of Canada, the first given to a non-graduate of an agricultural college; a plaque for achievement in agriculture from former Ontario premier Leslie Frost; and an award from the International Association of Fairs and Expositions.
He served as an executive and member of the board of directors of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, was president of the Brampton Fair Board, and was Peel's farmer of the year in 1977.
Mr. Fraser served on the former Chingacousy Township council for 12 years, including terms as reeve in 1946 and warden of Peel County in 1948. He also served on the board pf education and the Peel Memorial Hospital board, and was a director of the Halton and Peel Trust Company.
In addition he was president of the Peel Seed Growers' Cooperative, the Ontario Cattle Breeders, the Peel County Holstein-Friesian Club, and the Brampton curling club, where he received an honorary lifetime membership.
Mr. Fraser is survived by his wife, the former Bessie Steacy; sons Jack and James, both of Brampton, and daughters Betty June (Mrs. R.J. Stewart) of Bolton and Mary Lou (Mrs. J.H. Leach) of Kingsville. All four children are graduates of the Ontario Agricultural College.
He is also survived by brother Wils of Brampton, and sisters Kate (Mrs. Norman Laidlaw) of Norval and Mary (Mrs. James Steen) of Mississauga, as well as 12 grandchildren.
Services were to be held today at 2 P.M. at Huttonville United Church, with burial in Brampton Cemetery.
