OBITUARY - WENDELL E. SAGE

Wendell E. Sage, son of Levi and Miriam Sage, was born Feb. 20, 1862 , near London, Ontario, Canada. In the fall of 1865 the family emigrated to Iowa and settled first on a farm east of Victor.

At the age of 13 his father died and for over 20 years he made his home with his aged mother, contributing every kindness he could for her peace and comfort in her declining years.

During the Spanish-American War he served in the navy, being stationed at Key West, Fla. At the time of the World War he did a great deal of work for his country, giving his time and services most willingly.

He was married December, 1901, to Mabel Kerr at Victor and they have made their home since then in South Dakota, most of the time in or near Huron.

His death came unexpectedly at Hot Springs, S. Dak., on Jan. 28, 1931, where he was receiving treatment for an infected hand in the Veterans hospital. The body was brought to Victor and funeral services held Saturday afternoon at the M.E. church, conducted by Rev. O.E. McBride, the pastor. Burial was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery with a military service by the American Legion.

Mr. Sage was always a patriotic citizen, a good neighbor, a tireless worker for rural school betterment and a loving father and husband.

He leaves to mourn his loss a widow, and three foster children: Mrs. Mamie Wodstrichill, Fred and Donald Sage; also two sisters: Mrs. Joe Fourtner of Des Moines, Iowa, and Mrs. J. K. Pease of Huron, S. Dak.; a brother, Joseph Sage, at Salida, Colo.
