. A Tale of Two Sisters:
On the 1867 Census for Garafraxa Township, Robert Dee Little was listed as a resident of Lot 12, Concession 12. They were still living on the farm. However, sometime after 1867, Robert Little purchased a Hotel-Tavern in Garafraxa, Wellington Center. The 1871 Census states: 1. Hotel (Ann's Hotel); 2. Physician; 3. Blacksmith Shop; 4. Store.

This Hotel-Tavern was located about 20 miles from the Fielding Hotel in Ospringe, owned by her sister Margaret.
The 19th century traveller making the long slow & grinding journey from Quebec & eastern Ontario did so on rough rutted trails through the Ontario wilderness. Along those rough roads the first dwellings that sprung up was the hotel-tavern. Every 5 miles or so, these taverns offered a refreshment stop for man & beast alike. These hotel-taverns opened their doors long before the post-offices, churches, schools & other such public buildings.
Oxen or horses could be fed, watered & stabled whilst the weary, traveller found home cooking & a brew to warm their innards. If necessary, for 25 cents, a place to spend the night with all he could eat & bed for his animal; albeit the traveller may have had to share his bed with others. In the counties of Bruce & Grey alone, there were over 200 of these traveller's rest-inns.
Some of the names of these early inns were; Bab Ryan's Roadhouse; The Rising Sun; Starvation's Corner's Wayhouse; Rockford Castle; Grannie Green's - to name only a few. & so it was one of these hotel-taverns that Robert & Ann eventually came to own. The name of their tavern has been lost to antiquity.
In the early days the tavern was used for many purposes: church gatherings; land auctions; local meetings; & all the while the never-ending supply of cheap bootleg Canadian Whiskey. Pails of whiskey were plentiful; 5¢ could buy a "grunt" - take a breath, put the bottle in your mouth & swallow as much as possible in one large gulp. The mass consumption of liquor often led to brawls that required the attendance of both doctor & sheriff. The consumption of alcohol in the early days became the topic of legends.
Who were these hotel-tavern operators? They were local characters, congenial & hospitable, the host-of-the-road kind of people. Entertainment of their guests kept them busy. Besides drinking, gambling was often part of the entertainment package that came along with the Inn. Robert was one of these hosts; Ann (& Margaret) took care of the home cooking. Robert Dee Little did not survive long as a hotel keeper.  He died within 3-4 years of purchasing his Hotel-Tavern-Inn. On Robert's death certificate, his profession was listed as "Hotel Keeper". Cause of death his son informed the Physician, was the consumption of too much liquor within a 2 week period.
Ann's death certificate states that she died of Asthma which she suffered from for 15 years. She was buried at Erin Union Cemetery.

Ann's sister Margaret also owned one of these Hotel-Taverns in Ospringe, called the Fielding Hotel, 1861 - 1871 selling it circa 1875.
2of their sons moved to Manitoba. Their eldest son, Lemuel, applied for a land grant & received 2 1/4 sections. One of them, SE 1/4 9-19-14 W1 (see attached grant) was only about 2 miles from HR. The other one, NE 1/4 29-11-10 W1, was located closer to Andy McCutcheon. It is not known if he knew that his uncle & his first cousin were living near-by. Their other son, Albert also moved to Manitoba & became a grain buyer at Morden Manitoba, 1901.

One girl, Mary, stayed near Erin & died of typhoid fever at the age of 62. The other 3 daughters immigrated to the USA, settling in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan.
This family had one set of Twins.

    . DISCIPLES OF CHRIST.
Briefly then, the Esquesing church grew peacefully into the principles of the Campbellian reformation, & in June, 1843, the first June meeting of the Ontario Disciples, was held. On that occasion the name "Disciples of Christ" or "Christians" was used. The site of this meeting house was near Norval, actually on the Menzies farm, lot 8, 10th line, Esquesing. So small was the log building, that at the first June meeting, Ash records that numbers of the listeners had to vacate their seats in order to permit others to hear.

This Esquesing church was characterized by very strict discipline as to its members' conduct. For, with this strong desire to maintain the purity of the witness to the gospel, there was evident the air of exaltation & discovery which are elements in any youthful cause. There was not much experience to fall back upon, & the Bible was truly an honored medium of counsel toward maintaining a high standard of conduct with which to exalt the Christian profession; & who can deny the wholesomeness of such an aim? Consider the delicacy of the recording scribe who could indite upon his records about a sister that had erred & been removed from fellowship-"for a crime mentioned in I Corinthians." ... This forest sanctuary to Christ which Esquesing folk raised, has long since passed from common knowledge, but the spiritual emanations from that Bible-loving people still grasp at the stars.

    > 1938 - [ To Uncle] Thomas McCutcheon, [i.e. Jane Matilida McCutheon's brother Thomas Asa McCutheon:]
Hugh McCutcheon & Mary Stewart, the first of our ancestors in Canada were born county Down, Ireland. Hugh's mother was Ann Fulton. The Stewart farm was next to the estate of Lord Dufferin.
After Hugh & Mary were married they must have remained in Ireland for the first child, William was born there. Some of the Stewart family came to Canada with the McCutcheons (one brother died of fever crossing the ocean & was buried at sea.)
All the Stewarts, but Mary, settled at Montreal by the English River. They were David, John, William, James, Robert, Martha (Mrs. Ritchie) & Jane. I might says that in later years, Robert came to Erin & spend his last days at the McCutcheon farm on the 3rd line of Erin. He is buried at Ballinafad, Ont., beside Hugh & Mary in the west corner of the cemetery.

Hugh & Mary McCutcheon came as far as Montreal where their daughter Ann was born. Thomas & Ellen were born at Cobourg, The rest, Margaret Stewart, John, Jane, & Robert were all born at home in Erin Township.

Hugh & Mary worked hard, Mary helped a lot. One of Mary's brothers came to see her & it was so long since she had seem them she did not know them. Mary went to Montreal to visit her people & as there were no railroads, she road horse back to Oakville, [ south to a port on Lake Ontario - near Hamilton, ON.,] then took the boat to Montreal. I know once Mary came back from Montreal & rode home alone on horseback. She had a big load, as her people had given her so much to take back to the bush land. She got very tired & people along the way made her say overnight with them & rest.

Hugh died in 1861 at age of 64. Mary died in 1893 at the age of 96. They were both born in 1797.

. [Post Script probably by Thomas McCutheon, 1888- 1975). All of their family are gone. William died in Kansas, Ann in Erin village, Thomas in Everton, Ellen in Erin, Margaret in British Columbia, Stewart in Erin Village, John in Big Rapids, Michigan, Jane in Toronto, Robert in Neepawa, Manitoba.

    Notes:

1869 Sep 2 - HR joined the American Civil War when is was 19 years old. His father-i-law, Andrew lamest may have fought side by side. HR & Lamott may have been drawn of Kansas by the American government's offer of free land in Kansas to veterans.

HR was born the youngest son of Hugh & Mary. He was 15 years younger than his oldest sister, Ann, & yet their paths, or rather her children's paths, crossed his in Manitoba years later. We have often wondered if he knew that Lemuel Little was his nephew, who homesteaded very close to both himself & Andy.
His childhood years were quite idyllic on the farm in Erin, Ontario. Being the youngest, he was spared a lot of the heavier farm labour that his older siblings bore the brunt of.  hat's not saying that he didn't have to do farm work, for he did. He was to become a very successful farmer….later on in his life; so he learned his trade well. But I am getting ahead of my story.
What possessed him to become a Soldier of Fortune, we don't know. As related by Andy only that he did become one.
But first, he got a girl "in the family way". He met Andrew Lamott's only child Rebecca about 1861. It was also the same year that his father, Hugh, died. The Lamott's were living 20 miles to the north (in Arthur Township) of the McCutcheons, on a homestead. According to the historical records found, Andy was 4 months old when his parents married. It was also around this time HR went to live on that homestead, with his new in-laws & a new born baby. Over the next several years, he & Andrew Lamott were to became very close.
12th April 1861 & the American Civil War had just begun. There were 45,000 Canadians who served in this war.  Andrew Lamott & HR McCutcheon were amongst them. HR, recently losing his father, never inherited anything. His Dad died intestate & his Mom continued living on the original farm in Erin. HR needed funds to finance his own farm in Ontario. The cheap new western Land Grants were still 15 years in the future.
It is believed that HR, after getting married in June 1862, headed south to the USA by August 1862. He returned once in 1864 or 1865 long enough to make Rebecca "in the family way again" with Mary, then he left, not returning until sometime in 1867. Robert John was born thereafter. This coincides with Andy's recollections. One time Andy recalled "……when he was young, he was no darn good as a father….." Andy remembers him coming & going when he was a young boy, not being around very much, henceforth his comments. It also coincides with the births of the children. Andy maintained that Rebecca lost no children. And then there are the existing war records that need to be verified, as of yet.
It's understandable why a boy would think that his father was "no good" when he wasn't around very often during Andy's formative years.
Why did HR go to war as a Soldier of Fortune? Perhaps adventure, loyal to the cause of slavery (he fought for the Union), maybe he liked to kill, money. At home on the farm in Arthur, he was lucky if he made $10 per month. From historical records, Soldiers of Fortune, pedestrian Soldiers, were paid, in gold coin, between $20 & $22 US per month. They were paid more than the regular recruits, who earned between $13 & $16 a month. In those days, a sizable sum of money; enough for him to buy a farm. When he came home to Arthur, his saddle bags would have been jingling with USD gold coin.

In 1867, HR McCutcheon, Rebecca, Andrew & his sister, Mary, were living on EOSR, Lot 26, along with Andrew Lamott & Jane Ferguson. This was the farm in Andrew's tale "The Man Who Rode with Jessie James". To quote Andrew "When I was a young lad I lived on my grandfather's farm near Mount Forest in Ontario…" This was the grandfather whom Andrew McCutcheon was named after.
By 1870 he owned the farm in Arthur; Andrew Lamott & Jane had moved south to Neosho, Kansas. In the 1877 County Atlas for Arthur, Wellington, R. McCutcheon is solely named on EOSR, 26, Lot size 100 acres. Lamott is no longer listed on that lot.
Circa 1880, HR heard the stories of cheap land opening up in the "Territories," as Western Canada was called.  For $10 a quarter section of land could be purchased in Manitoba. He applied for a Land Grant & received it. After disposing of his farm in Arthur, Ontario around 1885, HR, his wife, & 5 of their children left Arthur, Ontario for the "Territories". According to family folklore, they came west in Red River Carts, settling on a farm in the locality of Spring Hill, Manitoba which is located north-west of Neepawa. HR & his family first appear in the 1891 census for Manitoba, in the newly formed Rural Municipality of Rosedale. HR was one of the first settlers in Springhill. HR received title to his land on the 28 January 1898.
In 1897, building was brisk in the Glensmith area. Council news lists a few [houses] as follows: H.R. McCutcheon frame story & a half at $500.00, W.E. Mabley log house $200.00. His is an entry in the book "Kelwood Bridges the Years".  This entry is significant in that is an attestation as to the wealth that HR was accumulating. Compared to the houses of the era being built, log homes at $200, he built a very capacious house; 2 story framed. It was "the talk of the town".
HR's wife, Rebecca Lamott, died in 1912 leaving him on the farm, living alone. He got ill not long after she died & was unable to care for himself so a nurse by the name of Cecilia Black was hired. She stayed with him until his death on the 15 November 1917. He was finally laid to rest beside his wife of 52 years at the Riverside Cemetery in Neepawa, Manitoba.
When HR died, he was relatively wealthy. The land depression still had not devastated Manitoba & when the farms were sold, $5000 was bequeathed to each of his 4 surviving children. He also bequeathed $500 to his grandson, Robert McCutcheon, perhaps because Robert (Bob) was his name sake. Bob, who was only 19 years old at the time, spent his inheritance on a new car called the Tin Lizzie. Bob drove it for a while, as long as the gas lasted & then had to tow it behind a team of horses.  "HR" also left a small amount of money to his nurse, Cecelia Black.

. ELLA HAMILTON'S FAMILY BIBLE: 12 X 9 X 4.5 inches thick. This Bible does not bear a publication date as such, but does have a publisher's note that it was entered into US Librarian of congress in 1876. The first entry for Richard & Jane's marriage was, thus entered at least two to three decades later. The Bible was then given to her eldest daughter, Jennie Walker, who in turned left it her eldest & only daughter, Marie Felker. The Bible then came to Marie's niece, myself, Patricia Felker Ahlberg.

Here I would like to make interesting notation: Between the pages of Luke XXI -XXII, there are several dark blue ink spots. Additionally, caught up in the binding was a broken & spent wooden match head. Grandmother Ella was well noted for smoking a pipe! - So which came first the flying match head or spilt ink?

  31. 41.  Andrew Thomas ANDY MCCUTCHEON Descendancy chart to this point (10.Hugh2, 1.Hugh1) was born on 20 Mar 1861 in Arthur Twp., Wellington Co., Ontario; died on 20 Feb 1954 in Kelwood, Manitoba; was buried in Kelwood Community Cemetery.

    Notes:

    - Andy never received his Letters Patent to this farm. Tragedy struck them when their house burned to the ground from an overheated stove pipe. He had no insurance, so the family lost everything, including the prized piano they had recently purchased with his inheritance money. The family went to Roche Percee SK where Andy found work in the Souris coal mines.

1953 THE MAN WHO RODE WITH JESSE JAMES :
There will be a big celebration at Kelwood Manitoba next Friday for Andrew McCutcheon who will be celebrating his 10th birthday. Neighbours will crowd into the little home where he lives with his youngest son George, & his daughter-in-law & grandchildren. Old Andy will dance a jig & there will be plenty of food. After his jig Old Andy will return to his favourite chair to watch the fun. His great grandchildren will crowd around him & direct his mind to the past.

Grandpa, tell us about the times you rode with Jesse James, they will ask. Maybe Old Andy won't hear them very well at first, so the children will shout a little louder & then finally the old man will smile & nod & his eyes will mist up a bit.

"When I was a young lad I lived on my grandfather's farm near Mount Forest in Ontario" he may say.  "This fellow came out of the bush one day. Said his name was Jesse James. We didn't know he was a hold-up man. Stayed & worked at our place for two or three weeks. Seemed a good fellow. I was around 18 at the time & he was 4 or 5 years older 'n me. Him & me went riding lots of times. Oh, that Jesse, could he shoot. Could take 3 nicks out of a squirrel's tail as he run up a tree."
The children will laugh as they always do. This is their favourite story & they know it by heart. What else happened, Grandpa?
But Old Andy will have forgotten & will be stamping his foot in time to the music. The children will persist until he returns to the tale. Little by little he will tell of Jesse' prowess with a gun - the wild pigeons they shot in the pea fields, of the bears & the coons they brought home. There will be admiration in his voice, undimmed by the greater part of a century.
It is with sadness & reluctance he tells the latter part of the story - of how his grandfather discovered that his new hired man was only using his farm as a hide out after a recent robbery in the States & had hidden his share of the loot in the loft of the barn.
Shortly after this Jesse 'borrowed" a horse & rode away. Down the trail he was joined by an accomplice. The 2 men headed for Mount Forest where they committed a robbery & then disappeared. Old Andy shakes his tousled white head. "That Jesse sure could shoot" he always says.

Andrew McCutcheon was born near Arthur, Ontario in 1852. His acquaintance with the notorious outlaw Jesse James may be a fact but there is no record that Jesse James or any member of his gang ever reached Canada. But, there is a period of time around 1870 when his whereabouts were never definitely ascertained.
Mr. McCutcheon may unknowingly hold the missing link to the James story.  His reference to Jesse's age as compared to his own is correct as records show the outlaw was born in 1847. A recent research conducted by the Mount Forest Historical Society revealed no written record to show definite proof that Jesse James was ever in the district but several residents were convinced of the fact because of stories which had been handed down to them from reliable sources. The exact location of a shack in Proton Township, which he once used as a hide-out, was also established.
As a young man Mr. McCutcheon worked in the lumber woods of Muskoka. He helped to make the first rut roads in this area. Here, he recalls many a skirmish with the Indians. At one time he was captured by a marauding band but allowed to go free after they stripped him of all his possessions. He still recalls with sadness that it was here he lost his beloved Bible & hymn book given to him by his mother.
Later he wandered down through the northern States where he worked on small river boats & in the iron mines. In 1889 he was married in Lambston, New Jersey.  He moved to Manitoba in 1896 when they took up a homestead.  In 1915 they moved to Saskatchewan where he continued to farm at various places. After the passing of his wife in Northgate, Saskatchewan, he returned to Manitoba in 1935. This time he settled on a farm in the Kelwood district. Later he moved into the village of Kelwood but with no thought of retirement.
At 85 years of age he was available for part time employment & worked intermittently for several years. But around the time he marked his 100th birthday, his doctor persuaded him to stop buck sawing wood. He accepts his longevity with apparent unconcern.  He continues to enjoy above all three hearty meals a day, his pipe, the visits of his friends & memories of the days when he rode with Jesse James.
Ref: (BY Wanda Neill Tolboom, Winnipeg Free Press 1953)

    - 1953 Fall, Andy was cutting wood for the household with an axe when it slipped & he cut his big toe. Gangrene quickly set in & he was hospitalized at Neepawa Hospital. The doctor informed him that in order for him to survive, his big toe would need to be amputated. Andy's replay was "..absolutely not. I was born with all my body parts & I am going to die with them…."

    - Andrew was the oldest child born to Hugh Robert "HR" McCutcheon & Rebecca Lamott. Andrew McCutcheon didn't come west - with the family in approximately 1885. Instead, he wandered south to the United States, ending up in New Jersey looking for work in the mines. It was here where he met & married Lillian Simpkin. Lillian was 13 years old. Lillie is buried in an unmarked grave in Estevan, Saskatchewan.

A handsome photo of Andy McCutcheon, Andy is seated, wearing a corduroy jacket & pants & heavy button sweater. He has a heavy mustache with red or fair, graying hair, blue eyes.

    Notes:

    DEATH OF MOTHER AND DAUGHTER:
Jane McCutcheon died very young, at the age of 33, soon after her third and final daughter was born. She never recovered fully after her last birth.

She was incapable of caring for Sadie, so for the short two years of Sadie's life, she was raised by her grandparents, HR McCutcheon and Rebecca Lamott.

Although the historical records do not reflect it, Jane died before her baby girl, Sadie.

She thankfully never knew that her baby girl died. Sadie was two years old when she died.

Records say that "Sarah" Jane McCutcheon died 22nd September 1906. However, the coffin breastplate from her casket says she died 23rd September 1904. This agrees with family recollections that say Sadie was raised by her grandmother, Rebecca Lamott McCutcheon.

Mrs. Jane Pocket aged thirty years, beloved wife of Richard Pocket of Glensmith, and daughter of Robert McCutcheon of Springhill, died on Friday September 23rd at her home in Glensmith. Funeral services were held at 8 o'clock Sunday morning, the interment taking place in Neepawa. The deceased leaves a husband and three children to mourn her loss. The funeral was attended by a number of sorrowing relatives and friends.

. 1881 Oct 20, Lot 2, Con 2: Thomas McCutcheon & wife brought the land from Hugh A Stewart, 1866 Jan 9 he sold it to son Hugh Robert McCutcheon & wife who settled on the farm when they married & lived there all there married life.
At that time they lived in a log house across the lane from the present one. There was a small barn they built the new one in 1894, the stone pig pen in 1896, the double brick house in 1900. Brick for the house was all hauled from Milton Brick Yards by team & sleigh. There was no sleighing that winter until after New Years. All the lumber, including scantlings & shingles were cut in the swamp, with the exception of the kitchen floor which was maple. For some reason the brick layer had every brick dripped in water. Son Tom thought he could do that job but a pile of brick fell on him, knocking him unconscious & caused a number of cuts & bruises.
The youngest daughter Bertha, was the first baby to be born in the new house.
The implement shed was built 1907 between the house & barn. At one time there were about 8 apple trees, 2 plum & 2 cherry trees. The last Dutchess apple tree at the front of the house near the road, was cut down in 1963 by Fred Archibald who was living there then.
About 1912 a well was dug at the edge of the swamp & the windmill pumped water to the thought in the shed. The McCutcheons kept Shorthorn cattle, Yorkshire pigs & Lincoln sheep.
When Thomas, better known as T.D. , was married his day. Lois & son Robert were born there. In later years when Bertha married Thomas Aitken, they lived in half of the house & their dau. & son Marion & Mervin were also born there.

Tom & Bertha farmed & looked after Bertha's parents until their death then the estate was sold to this H Fine & his wife Laura. In March 1943 they moved over, after removing a partition in the upstairs to make a passage from the back to the front stairway.

The funeral was held to Churchill Cemetery on Saturday.

    . 1919 Feb 6, IN MEMORIAM
    ELSIE VIOLA McCutcheon
On Wednesday evening, 22nd January, 1919, at her father's home, 3rd line, Erin Township, the death occurred of Elsie V. McCutcheon, eldest daughter of Mr. Hugh McCutcheon, at the early age of 14 years. Her illness extended over 5months & was borne with heroic patience & cheerfulness. Early in December she underwent an operation in Queen Alexandra Hospital, Fergus, & her condition seemed to improve for a time, but a recurrence of the disease soon took place. Her sufferings became more & more intense until death finally released her.
Throughout her illness she greatly enjoyed meeting her girlhood friends & companions whom she recognized & welcomed to the last. Elsie was always somewhat delicate in health, but her mind was ever keen & alert. She passed her entrance examination in June, 1917, & afterwards took up continuation work for a year. She then devoted her whole time to music, a subject in which she was particularly gifted. At school Elsie was a general favorite. Her gentle & amiable disposition won for her the admiration & affection of all with whom she came in contact. Her capability & willingness to accept any part assigned her made her services a valuable asset in preparing for entertainments in church & school & in this capacity she will be greatly missed. The general esteem in which she was held is evinced by the gloom which her early death has cast over the entire neighborhood. Her sorrowing parents & sister have the sympathy of the community in their sad bereavement.
The funeral on Saturday to Churchill Cemetery was largely attended. The services were conducted by Rev. J. C. Wilson assisted by Rev. R. E. Jones. Several anthems appropriate to the occasion were rendered by a male quartette led by Mr. A. T. Mann. The floral tributes were beautiful. The pall bearers were Messrs. David, Robert & William McCutcheon, A. Murray, Chester Allen, and Alex. McPhedran.

Jennie has a photo of her standing in in the doorway of her grandparent's Hamilton fine goods general store in Erin; Later she ran her own grocery store on Weston Rd., Toronto. They were the first to have large standing radio in the store. Neighbours would come in to listen to the programming.

    Verity this Walter McCutcheon:

. 1978 Walter McCutcheon donated to Wellington County Museum a stereoscope. Walter McCutcheon was a barn framer in Eramosa Township. The stereoscope was found at a barn raising. It is not apparent how this came into his possession:
Wooden stereoscope with two glass lenses. Edge which touches the face is lined with velvet. Front crosspiece which holds the stereoview card is missing. Brandname on back: "The Saturnscope" with patent countries and dates on back. The stereoscope allows the viewer to see the view card as though it were a 3-dimensional scene. The 3-D effect is created by the 2 scenes on the card being photographed at very slightly different angles. - -
