Notes:

Denis was the oldest of the Callaghan brothers, and was the last to immigrate to Canada.
His younger brothers emigrated in 1826, and his son Murt emigrated in 1833.
But Denis remained in Ireland much longer, either to look after the home farm or perhaps to care for aging parents.
Denis, his wife and the remainder of his family likely came over in about 1840, at the same time that his son Thomas did.
Denis lived with his son Murt. on Con 5 Lot 36.
He was preceeded by his brothers Thomas and Daniel, and by his eldest son Cornelius.

Thomas and his younger brother emigrated to Canada first, followed 10 years later by their nephew Cornelius (eldest son of Denis). Denis emigrated in the mid 1840's.

Thomas was the second eldest of the original Callaghan brothers and emigrated to Canada in about 1826, along with his brother Daniel and their families.

Thomas held the original Crown Patent fromthe Canada Company for 100 acres, at Concession2, N 1/2 Lot20, deeded 4 Nov 1842.
He had been settled on this land at least since his application date of 17 May 1832.

After the death of her husband, Bridget moved in with the family of her daughter, Mary who married William Drummey.
Under the terms of his will, dated 28 Jul 1869, Thomas passed the land to his son Daniel T. Callaghan.
The date of enforcement by the executors of his will, John Shaughnessy and Michael Doyle, was 22 Jun 1871.

He left the West Half to his wife during her life. Part of the land was willed by Daniel's widow, Mury, to her only surviving child, Mary (Hart).

Thomas is buried directly adjacent to the graves of three of his children, Bridget, Thomas, and Johanna, as well as the grave of his great-grandson, Edward, son of his
grandson Thomas and Mary Flaghan.

Daniel emigrated with his older brother Thomas, followed 10 years later by their nephew Cornelius (eldest son of Denis. Denis emigrated in the mid 1840's.

Daniel held the original Crown Patent for 100 acres at Con 3 Lot25 S%, deeded on May 16,1843, property which he had been settled on for some 10 years.
The land at Con 3 Lot25 eventually passed to his son Denis (Big Din) Callaghan.
In 1834, the Hastings Militia rolls list Daniel as then living at Con 2 Lot25. This land was eventually passed down to Big Din's only surviving child, Johanna (Murphy).

He likely emigrated to Canada with his parents, in about 1840.
All three of the original Callaghan brothers named their first-born sons Cornelius, strongly suggesting that this may have been their father's name.
In order to distinguish one from the other, they were assigned their father's name as their own middle name.
Cornelius seems to have always lived with his family, first with his parents, then with various siblings, working as a farm labourer.
He died at the age of 75 years, at home at concession 5, Lot 36 of Kidney disease.

Several land record documents record it as 'Murtagh' and as this is the original Irish form,

With a number of small children to raise, the widowed Murt badly needed a woman in the house.
His second wife was already a widow when he married her.

He purchased 50 acres of land at the W Half Con 5 Lot 36 on Dec 14, 1856 - land which was later deeded to his son Denis under the terms of his will, on 09 Jul 1884.

Thomas died on March 31/1914 - he was a widowed farmer at the time.
The informant for his death was D.F. Callaghan


Thomas likely emigrated to Canada in about 1833, along with his brother Murt.
He owned and farmed 80 acres of land in Tyendinaga at Concession 5, Lot 31.
After his wife Bridget died in 1881, Thomas remained for a time on the family farm in Marysville.
Eventually he moved to be with his sons, who had moved to Campbellford, Ontario to work in the new Rathbun mill there.
In 1891, the widowed Thomas was living with his son Denis and daughter-in-law Eliza in East Percy Township, Northumberland (near Campbellford).
Apparently this arrangement did not suit Thomas, as the 1901 census shows him living back on Concession 5, Lot 31 in Tyendinaga, now as a boarder with the family of Denis
and Abbie Callaghan.
Thomas died at home of pneumonia,on 31 Mar 1914.
The Holy Name of Mary Church records his interment, with the following entry:
"Thomas Callaghan, aged 102. On this second day of April, l9l4,I, the undersigned priest inter Thomas Callaghan, the General, in the presence of
his son, Big Din, Little Din, Denis Callaghan, and a Company of the Lonsdale Fusiliers."

It is sad to note that the Callaghan name died out in this familyline within one generation, and the blood is carried now only through the female lines.

It is uncertain whether his first wife Mary was a spinster at the time of their marriage or if she was a widow, as she was some 22 years older than Din.
They were apparently quite happily manied for some 34 years. Mary was about 48 when they married, so understandably, this couple had no children.
Din married his second wife when he was 60.
His second wife Ellen became ill and died shortly after their marriage and died less than a year later of heart disease.
When Din married the third time he was 6'7, and Margaret was 37.
Despite his rather advanced age, this couple had three children, only one of whom survived to adulthood.

Big Din farmed a total of 200 acres at Con 3, lots 24 & 25 . He purchased the land at Con 3 Lot 24 on 12 Jan 1856.
The land at Con 3 Lot 25 was passed to him by his father.
Din's interment record shows that his funeral was attended by nephews Denis & Daniel Callaghan, William Callaghan, and many others.
He was buried 02 Feb 1907 , Marysville . They had three children

Some of the descendants of Daniel D. Callaghan spelled their name without the'g'.
This is thought to have been the result of the spelling of the family name by the priest at St. Charles Borromeo.
The new spelling stuck, and the shortened form became standard for several of his children, particularly that of William Callaghan.
Dan Callaghan was quite a successful farmer, and a man of no little means for his day.
He was quite well-off and highly respected within his community, perhaps the most affluent of any of our Callaghan ancestors.
In 1870, he bought 100 acres of land Con 4 Lot 14, and a further 80 acres of land at Con 4 Lot13.
Both of these properties eventually passed on to his son, Denis James.

Tom is one of the more elusive Callaghans to track down.
Very little is known about him, and records on his life have been very sparse.
His place of birth is altemately listed as both Ireland and Ontario.2e There is a Thomas Callaghan listed in the 1881 census for Marysville.
He is listed as a widower, age 33 and living alone, which may or may not be this Thomas, based upon the accuracy of Bridget's death date.
Thomas and Bridget possibly moved to the Deseronto area for a time.
After Bridget's death in 1893, it appears that Thomas moved back to Tyendinaga, living with his widowed sister Kate, until his death in 1917.
In the 1901 census he lists his place of birth as Ontario, and his year of birlh as 1826.

Michael and Catherine farmed lands, both in Tyendinaga and in nearby Richmond rownship.
In 1882 they were living in Tyendinaga on con 8 Lot 28, and a few years later they were listed at con 8 Lot 30.
After Michael's early death, Catherine was left a young widow with two small children to raise.
In 1906 she moved toLangdon, North Dakota with her married daughter Mary Ann Hunt, where many of her Marysville friends and relatives had also settled.

Many people from Tyendinaga jumped at the chance for steady wages and possible promotion.

Denis was a Lumber Foreman/Superintendent at the mill, as well as a farmer.

Notes:

Thomas and Mary lived first in Napanee, then in the Belleville area. In early 1881, T.C. moved to Campbellford along with his brother Denis to work for the new Rathbun Mill,
where he was hired as a Lumberman and Forestry Superintendent. Their brother-in-law Nicholas Callaghan, and several Callaghan cousins from Tyendinaga soon joined them.

This line was extremely ill-fated - by 1910 T.C.'s wife Mary and five of his seven children had died. In 1920, T.C. moved back to Tyendinaga, settling on Mill Street, in Deseronto.
His niece, Mary Jane, helped to care for him as he grew old. He died aged 85, of stomach cancer, and was buried 02 Jun 1928 in St. Vincent de Paul, Deseronto.

David moved to North Dakota and bought 160 acres of land there, in Harriston Township.
They lived about 2 or 3 miles Southeast of the Timothy Callahan farm, and very near also to the Michael Callaghan family.
Michael, Patrick, David Callaghan and James Malone all purchased their Dakota lands on the same day.

Tim was the earliest of the Tyendinaga Callaghan family to move west.
He travelled out to homestead in North Dakota in 1881.
Walsh County only began to be settled in 1880, so he was amongst the very earliest settlers in the entire area.
Tim legally acquired his homestead in Harriston Township, North Dakota, on 10 Oct 1882.
Once he had established his farm, he travelled back to Marysville, where he married Euphemia and brought her west to their new life.
Soon, other Tyendinaga families began to pour into the area to claim the much-coveted farmlands.

Family remembers Tim as having dark hair, a fair complexion and blue eyes.
He had a beard and smoked a pipe almost continuously. Unfortunately, his habit resulted in cancer of the throat, from which he eventually died.
At some point in time in the early 1900's this family dropped the'g' from the last name, thereafter spelling it as'CALLAHAN". They had nine children:

Denis, along with several brothers and cousins, went to Shawano, Wisconsin to work as a Lumberrnan.
Interestingly, Denis' cousin Jerry Ford married Abbie's sister.
Den and Abbey moved back to Tyendinaga in 1881, where they farmed Con 5 Lot 31. Two more children were born to them in Canada.
Both buried Marysville, their headstones marked simply 'Mother' and 'Father' near their daughter Mayme Callaghan Doyle.
