. 1832 Jan 2 - A spectacular phenomenon or pageant in the streets of York, on connected with the troubles of the time, must be mentioned. It was a demonstration to celebrate the second return of Mr. Mackenzie, after expulsion adopted description given by himself in his Sketches. A procession was formed at the Red Lion Inn, on Yonge Street [near Bloor St.] - Price's or Daniel Tier's [Beef Steak & Beer House] where the hustings [events] were.
In front of it was an immense sleigh belonging to Mr. Montgomery, which was drawn by 4 horses, carried between 20 - 30 men & 2 or 3 Highland pipers. From 50 to 100 sleighs followed, & between 1 - 2000 of the inhabitants. The procession passed by the Government House, from thence to the Parliament House, thence to Mr. Cawthra's, & then to Mr. Mackenzie's own house, giving cheers at each of these places. One of the most singular curiosities of the day." it is added, was a little printing-press, placed on one of the sleighs, warmed by a furnace, on which a couple of boys continued, while moving through the streets, to strike off their New Year's Address, & throw it to the people. Over the press was hoisted a crimson flag, with the motto, 'The Liberty of the Press.'
On the apex of Mr. Montgomery's pyramidal sleuth, stood the hero of the day himself, wearing the golden chair & medal presented to him a free hours previously, at the Red Lion.

Notes4: Upon Alexander's death in 1841 & his leaving his estate to several in family but the land was to go to Richard Montgomery. Stillwell & Statira Willson then brought a suit along with others in family against Richard & others concerned.

    Toronto History:
. On July 30, 1793, Lieutenant-Governor Simcoe landed at Toronto Bay to supervise the planing of a garrison & town. Thus the arrival of the Montgomery family in 1798 (as well as the Marsh family) was not coincidental, but part of the general shift of population. In the fall of 1798 Alexander Jr., with his family, moved to Toronto, then known as Little York. Statira Montgomery Dodge, writing for her mother, Sarah Montgomery Marsh, claims that Alexander Montgomery Jr. was a good friend of the governor.

When the Montgomery's arrived, the town had approximately 250 people. Ironically, York was largely settled by Americans. Most of these Loyalist Americans settled in farming townships on Yonge Street.

The first record we have of the family is in1804 in March of that year their daughter, Sarah married William Marsh Jr., who was employed as a blacksmith in his father's shop on Yonge St.
In 1812 Alexander & his son John managed to find themselves in the thick of the war with the Americans. At the time they were in Kingston bringing provisions by boat when they spotted the American invasion fleet. In an effort to warn Toronto of the impending invasion, John Montgomery along with his brother-in-law William Hill & other men began a forced march of 65 miles to reach the town before the enemy.
. 1813 April 27, a strong American force raided the town. The British retreated to Kingston & in the next few days the public buildings were looted & the Parliament Buildings were burned. Thus, records that might fill in the details of kinsman's life were lost.
. 1820 Alexander & his son, John, built a tavern on the east side of Yonge St. near Finch Ave. This was a two story frame building & it was called, the Bird in Hand".
. 1827 - A heated disagreement between father & son resulted in the building being cut in half, literally! From top to bottom & front to back, the building was sawed in half & John retained the southern half as an inn. The argument father & son had may have been political. Initially Alexander belonged to the old guard conservative faction &, John Montgomery became associated with the liberal left wing of the day. Later the 2 reconciled their differences but another son, Alexander III, split with the family over these disputes.

    My Dear Mrs. Montgomery.
I received the letter of Rev. Mr. Davis last week informing me of my brother's illness & requesting to see me. I will state that I have been most anxious to go, but on account of the sickness of my wife, I could not start at once. I now write to know if my brother Alexander is still alive, if so I will start immediately, as my wife is now out of danger & I feel that I can leave her with safety. By writing as soon as you receive this you will very much oblige.
    Very Truly Yours, John Montgomery.

1879 Nov 7 - Obituary Montgomery - At Barrie, on the 31 Oct. Mr. John Montgomery - at the advanced age of 96 years, 6 months. Decease was well known to most of the early settlers of York. We shall give an obituary note in our next issue:

    . 1879 Nov 21 - Biography-Obituary: continued from last week.
It would be impossible to relate the sufferings endured during their stay in the Toronto Jail whose trail came to those 2 sainted political martyrs, poor Lount & Mathews' gallows were left standing in full gaze of their fellow Reformers & prison suffers. Chief Justice Robinson ask JM did he have anything to say before sentence of death should not be pronounced.
JM stood up & replied," I consider that I did not get a fair or impartial trail. … the perjured evidence of W B Crew, Thorn, & Greenwood will haunt them in after years. They will never die a natural death…& all who have taken part in my sentence shall died & perished in hell's flames. John Montgomery will yet live & be living on Yonge St."
JM was removed & placed in close confinement & heavily muscled. His wife & children visited daily; his eldest daughter, now Mrs. Stoddard, was the little messenger who faithful to the trust, conveyed to her father news of the outside world, as well as bearing word home to the prisoners' friends in the county. He was sentenced to be executed in 3 weeks time on the scaffold which Lount & Mathews were executed, being almost in the front of the window where John Montgomery was confined. On the evening previous to the presumed execution, the painful visit of his family he was allowed to kiss the dear partner of his life, a blessed woman she was & the dear little children. Prisoners who witnessed the scene shed tears of sorrow & sympathy.
As theme drew near for separation, it was something never to be forgotten; & as a fact the late Sheriff Jarvis stood arms folded with the reprieve in his pocket: The sentence had been commuted to transportation for life in Tasmania! JM & other prisoners were confined at the Fort Henry in Kingston awaiting the transport ship. Two of 3 were chained together; they started in August 1838 a plan for escape. For 3 weeks they used an iron hoop to cut through 3 feet of stone wall. The debris was carried out in their pockets. Montgomery shared this money with Wilson Reid, Anderson & Joseph Snider & made their escape into a 3 hour hail storm! First they went up 8 steps into the room with 3 cannons placed to sweep passing vessels. The group let themselves down by a rope. Near the flagstaff John Montgomery fell off the wall into a rifle pit & fractured his left leg below the knee. The others carried him some distance - & he hopped on 1 leg for 7 miles with his maimed leg dangling by his side.
They could not procure a boat sufficient to carry them all, so they split up to meet at Cape Viscount, on the American side of the St. Lawrence River. Montgomery's let now was swelling & they moved him to the river to bath his leg. They had various encounters on the way inc. with 3 farmers; they took a cowpath until they came to a boat, Montgomery made use of a paddy for a crutch. Not knowing where they were, an Indian told them they were on Wolf's Island, 20 miles long. The Indian cut another crutch for Montgomery. They then made for the American shore where Montgomery was carried to the nearest hotel for medical help. Since leaving the Fort, it was 3 days since their first meal there. He remained there 6 week in confinement.
Montgomery made his way to Rochester; commenced as a grocer on Main St. & his family joined him. The Rochester Democrat made some feeling remarks concerning JM & the family in 1839. In 1841, the year of union of the 2 Provinces, amnesty was granted to Montgomery to return to Toronto. He built the Montgomery's Hotel. He applied to Parliament for redress & was granted $30,000. He lived to see great political grievances redressed: justice placed on Statue books, universal education, pure election laws by ballot, removal of the Clergy Reserve laws.
He leaves a third wife, 6 children, 4 by the first, 1 by he second & 1 by the third. the family are somewhat scattered, but a worthy son lately appointed Assistant Medical superintendent of Kingston Asylum.

INTRODUCTION HISTORY OF THE SITE ƒ
The David Dunlap Observatory property is an area of 76.5 hectares (189 acres) bordered by Hillsview Drive to the north, Bayview Avenue to the east, 16th Avenue to the south & the CNR Bala Line rail tracks to the west. ƒ
The property was the site of a 19th-century farmstead owned by Alexander Marsh, comprised of a brick farmhouse, a lane from Yonge Street, agricultural fields with hedgerows & an orchard. ƒ
When its observatory in downtown Toronto became unworkable due to light pollution, the University of Toronto identified the site as appropriate for a new facility, and the land was purchased as a gift to the University by Jessie Donalda Dunlap, as a memorial to her husband, David Alexander Dunlap. The new Observatory, which opened in 1935, included a dome housing a 74-inch (1.88m) reflector telescope & an Administration Building with 3 smaller telescope domes. See Figure 1. The main telescope was the second largest in the world at the time, and remains the largest in Canada. From 1935 to the early 1970s, the Observatory was at the forefront of Canadian astronomical research. Its achievements included advances in radio astronomy & the first direct evidence that the star Cygnus X-1 was a black hole. - - -

. Montgomery's Tavern Battle just north of Eglinton on Yonge Street:
. Dr. John W Montgomery, son of John & Mary Montgomery, was born at Newtonbrook, Ontario in 1827. Hence he was only 10 years of age when the Rebellion broke out, at which time he & his cousin, Abraham Wilson, were the only persons in the old hotel, the Sickle & Sheaf, owned by his Brother when the first cannon shot came through his home, cutting down the three chimneys. The two lads stood viewing the scene from the upper windows; they thought it mere sport until a second shot entered the wing, when they were removed by some of their friends.

During the 1837 Rebellion, the Yonge Street rebel had occupied John Montgomery's Tavern. Of the 300 men, a 150 men were posted in the woods behind the tavern & another 60 took up positions behind a line of rail fencing. One hundred & 50 were posted in the woods behind the tavern & another 60 took up positions behind a line of rail fencing. The majority of Mackenzie's supporters, numbering about 300, were gathered around the tavern proper. These primarily farmer-supporters of the Globe newspaper man, William Lyon Mackenzie, were gathered around the tavern proper.

On December 7th, 1837, Col. James Fitzgibbon & a 1,000 British regular soldiers & militiamen marched up Yonge Street & fired artillery at Tavern. During this 1837 Rebellion, Abraham Willson, 11 years old, & his cousin John Wilson Montgomery were playing on the third floor when his uncle John Montgomery's tavern was set on fire by the rebels. The two boys playing upstairs were spotted & barely escaped the fire. The largely unarmed rebels had no choice but to retreat. The grand Government Forces then looted the tavern & burned Montgomery's Tavern to the ground, before marching back to York.

An Historical Plaque marking the location of Montgomery's Tavern may be found on Yonge Street, north of Eglinton Avenue at the former two-story cement Art Deco, Canada Postal Station K. In commemoration of the Battle of Montgomery's Tavern has been designated a National Historic Site.

Michael Shepard House,101 Senlac Road at Burnett Ave., Lot 17, Concession 1WY.
Built in 1859, the Michael Shepard House is constructed in the Georgian Survival style & assumes great significance in connection with the Shepard family that settled in the historic community of Lansing at the beginning of the 19th century. The House is also significant in association with Michael Shepard, who supported William Lyon Mackenzie's Radical Reform party & participated in the Rebellion of 1837.
Architecturally, the massing of the house takes the form of a 2 story main block with a one-and-a-half story kitchen wing positioned at the west rear. Incorporating a generous sense of proportion & a pleasing symmetry, the three-ranked facade of the Michael Shepard House is generally considered to be less common among Georgian buildings in the region. The Michael Shepard House has been recommended by the North York Heritage Committee/Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee for designation under part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act (R.S.O. 1990) on architectural & historical grounds.

Montgomery's Tavern just north of Eglinton on Yonge Street:
During the 1837 Rebellion, Abraham Willson, 11 years old & his cousin John Wilson Montgomery were playing on the third floor when his uncle John Montgomery's tavern was set on fire by the rebels. The two boys playing upstairs were spotted & barely escaped the fire.

Richard, Alfred, Edwin, John, George & William Archibald Montgomery.

. 1850 main crops were cotton, corn, rice & sugar cane. West Feliciana Parish was full of large plantations.

. During the Civil War the Union gunboats shelled & destroyed their home in St. Francisville (RoseMont) & their business in Bayou Sara (Cotton Gin) & the utter impossibility of replacing either given the circumstances, the Montgomery family was forced to leave & opted to move to an area less torn by war. They moved to Texas but soon discovered that dealing with raiding Indians was a new problem they had not anticipated & were not prepared for, mainly because all the older boys were away at war.

Photo of John Willson Montgomery: Very health, elderly man, full white beard, tall hat, three piece light checked suit, apparently sitting in a rocking chair. He is a little sad looking perhaps.

Dr. John W Montgomery, son of John & Mary Montgomery, born at Newtonbrook, Ontario, in 1826. Hence he as only 10 years of age when the Rebellion broke out, at which time he & his cousin, Abraham Wilson, were the only persons in the old hotel, the Sickle & Sheaf, owned by his father, when the first cannon shot came through his hime cutting down the 3 chimneys. These 2 lads stood viewing the scene from one of the upper windows; they thought it mere sport until a second shot entered the wing, when they were removed by some of the friends.
After the Rebellion closed, & his after made his escape to the United States, his family joined him at Rochester, NY. Here our subject attended the Collegiate Institute until 1843, when the family returned to Toronto. He entered the private medical school taught by the late Dr. John Rolph, where he graduated in 1874.
During his medical course he was offered, by a vote of his class, the position of Demonstrator of Anatomy, which he accepted. After completing this education, he practiced at Sutton Village*, Ontario, 25 years.
In 1872 he removed to Bell Ewart, Simcoe County, where he remained until 1877, when he received the appointment of assistant superintendent in the Kingston Insane Asylum where he remained 5 years. In 1882 he was transferred to the Hamilton Insane Asylum where he present resides. In his politics he has always been a strong Reformer. His first wife was Josephine Gorham of the City of New York; second Elizabeth Anderson of Hawick, Scotland; this third Charlotte, daughter of William Jones, Esq. of Kingston, Ontario. He has 4 sons & 3 daughters.
Note1: Sutton is a larger town, about an hour's drive (modern) from his home in Bell Ewart, also in Simcoe County. However, he would have to pass through Holland Marsh - PJA

    Obituary:
. 1907 Nov 27, Wed. Died at Ripe Old Age.
    J. W. Montgomery, aged 92 years [=b.1815] died Sunday at 10 o'clock at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Edmund Pierson.
Deceased was one of the oldest citizens of Falls county, coming here about 50 years ago from Canada*. He resided in what is now the Travis community & reared a large family there. His wife has been dead many years. Mr. Montgomery was possessed of a remarkably bright intellect & rugged constitution. He was an entertaining conversationist & many there are who recall pleasant hours spent in listening to his interesting narratives (sic) concerning an eventful & well spent life.
Until a few months ago he was active & moved about with his accustomed vigor. For most of the time since last spring he has been in doors & much of the time in bed. He had no illness more than extreme age & his taking off was due to that. He was a kind hearted gentleman & his memory will be revered by many friends. The remains were interred at Travis on Monday.

. OLIVE BELLE COOPER (nee MONTGOMERY)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Olive Belle Cooper (nee Montgomery). Billie passed away Sunday night surrounded by family at York Central Hospital in Richmond Hill. She will be dearly missed by her husband Sylvan, her children & families. Her legacy will live on in grandsons & granddaughters. She leaves behind her a brother X and was predeceased by sisters Violet & Margaret.
Born March 24, 1925, Billie lived a full & rich life; she was a strong woman with a big laugh & a huge, kind heart. An outgoing force of nature & a woman ahead of her time, she always made time to chat with anyone she met. Friends & family will recall her quick smile, zest for life & a woman constantly on the move, gladly taking on all the challenges of a life well lived.

A descendant of United Empire Loyalists, Billie was proud of her rich Montgomery family heritage. With 18th Century roots that predated Confederation, she had several illustrious ancestors that played a part in the history of Canada: Montgomery's Tavern which served as a staging ground for the rebellion of 1837 was part of family lore; Lucy Maude Montgomery was a distant relative; & when Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery passed away her father received a few hundred Pounds Sterling as inheritance. Her father Oliver was the first property manager at the O'Keefe Centre & her childhood home was full of show biz photos & mementos from the era.

This pride in her heritage led Billie to see it as a duty to take an active role in making her community a better place for all. Billie was a presence in her neighbourhood, making a point of getting to know all the families in the community. Locally she lobbied the old borough of North York to install the first public bocce court after watching her neighbours enjoy the game on a piece of scrub grass by the public school. Billie followed this up by getting lights installed so that her neighbours' enjoyment could continue into the evening. An enjoyment in community service led Billie to found Forgotten Corners rate-payers association providing recreational facilities for a then neglected corner of North York. Billie was also an active member of the Liberal party of Canada & served on the successful campaigns of several MPs for York-West Riding through the 1960s, 1970s & the 1980s. Her long service was rewarded with an honorary position in the Party, a distinction she was rightly proud of. To her family she was a constant inspiration & pillar of support. Billie was always on the go & stressed the importance of service & charity to her children. An active member of the Sisterhood of Beth Am synagogue, she instilled in her children the value of giving, setting an example of what the concept of Mitzvah meant: Billie was always making time to help out the underprivileged, the infirm & anyone in need. At the same time she dearly loved her children & spared no effort in attending to raising them. She taught her children to be open minded, fair & giving.
She stressed the importance of education to her children; with her constant support & encouragement her 3 children all graduated from University. Her many friends will remember Billie as fun-loving & loyal, a woman who enjoyed entertaining at her homes in Toronto & Florida. Billie loved the open road & was always on the go. She had a keen interest in design & decor & an enthusiasm for antiques & curios. She loved pets & especially her Yorkie Mickey, who kept her company on many drives to Florida. Billie spent the last few years at home focusing on family. She took great joy in her children's happiness & accomplishments.
She enjoyed watching her grandchildren growing into fine young men. ... recent grandchildren added smiles & much laughter to her home. Her devoted daughter was a constant support to Billie, & provided much appreciated help whenever it was needed. Dau.X was a tiny baby & at the time this was not as commonplace as it is today. It was only with huge effort & endless dedication from her mother that Sharon went on to thrive, grow strong & grow into the accomplished woman Billie was so proud to call her daughter. Billie delighted in Sharon's world travels & loved to hear her stories & share the pictures she took. In the end, she was her own woman, true to herself as well as family & friends & all our worlds are diminished with her passing. Funeral services will be held at: York Cemetery & Visitation Centre, 160 Beecroft Road, Toronto, (1 block West of Yonge, north of Shepard). Chapel Service commences at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 15th. The family will be hosting a celebration of Billie's life for guests following the service from 3:30 till 9:30 p.m. at home. Patent US348306
WALTER VANDER HEYDEN WILLSON. CLUTCH FOR STREET OAR BRAKES.
No. 348,306. Patented Aug. 31, 1886. Washington, D. C., UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER VANDER HEYDEN \VILLSON, OF BRUNSWICK, NE\V YORK.
    CLUTCH FOR STREET-CAR BRAKES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,306, dated August 31, 1886.
    Application filed June 12, 1886.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, WALTER VANDER HEY DENWILLSON, of Brunswick, County of Bensselaer, State of New York, have invented new & useful Improvements in Clutching Mechanism for Street-Car Brakes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to clutching mechanism & more particularly to that class of it which is used in connection with a ratchet & detent to operate the brake-shaft & brake of street cars, although it may be equally well applied to actuate drills or other mechanism requiring the same function of operating parts.
Accompanying this specification, to form a part of it, there are two plates of drawings, containing 10 figures, illustrating my invention, with the same designation of parts by letter-reference used in all of them.
Of these illustrations, Figure 1 shows a side elevation of my improved clutching mechanism applied to operate the chain-shaft & chain of a street-car brake. Fig. 2 shows a top view of the mechanism illustrated at Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a section taken on the line w x of Fig. 1. Fig. shows a top view of the mechanism with the upper cap removed & with the clutch-shaft shown in transverse section. Figs. 5, 6, 7, S, 9, & 10 show views of detached parts of the apparatus.
The several parts of the mechanism thus illustrated are designated by letter-reference, & the function of the parts is described as follows: 4. The letter S designates the clutch-shaft, & as having the operating crank-arm H. The letter W designates a wheel that is keyed to said shaft at k, so as to turn with it. The letter 9 designates a wedge-form groove that is made in the perimetrical face of the said disk form wheel W.
    - The letter D designates the housing or case that incloses the clutching mechanism, & this case or housing is produced by means of an upper dish-form cap, K, that has a passage-way, 1-, through it for the clutch-shaft S, a camplate, P, that has the centrally eutont? area A, with the latter having on its inner edge the cams O & stops 10 & a dish form bottom or base-plate, K", to the bottom Serial No. 204,910. (No model.)
of which latter is attached the sleeve S, which is keyed to the brake-chain shaft S While I have shown the cap-plate K & cam-plate P as made separately, they may be made in one piece, if desired, & connected to the bottom or base plate by bolts & nuts; or, if desired, the bottom plate & camplate may be made in one piece & connected to the top plate by bolts & nuts to form the case or housing D.
The letters W designate wedges, each of which, on one of its ends, is provided with rectangular faces & at its other end with the wedge-form surfaces f".
The letters b designate screw-bolts, adapted to pass through the base-plate K the intermediate canrplate, l , & cap K, & thus secure these plates together by means of uutsn?.
The letter F designates a part of the car platform, & It a ratchet arranged in revolution on the rim of the base-plate K". The letter (Z designates a spring detcnt? or pawl pivoted to the platform & adapted to engage with the teeth of said ratchet.
The clutch-wheel W, as arranged on the shaft S & keyed thereto, is placed within the area A of the cam-plate 1, between the cap-plate K & base-plate K & the wedges W are also arranged in the said area, so that their rectilinear faces f will abut against the vertical faces of the cams 0, between the stops TV", with each of the wedges s0 placed that their wedging-surfaces f shall be where they will enter the groove 5 of the wheel W when crowded inwardly by the engagement of the said cams. With the parts thus placed when the clutching-wheel WV (by the action of the crank H) is turned in the direction of the arrow shown at Fig. 4, the clutching-wedges are forced into the groove 9 of the. clutch-wheel W by the action of the cams O to securely lock the parts, so that the whole closure D, the sleeve S & shaft S are turned also by the movement of the crank in the indicated direction. When the clutch1 wheel XV is turned in a direction that is opposite to that given by the arrow at Fig. 4, then the said wheel moves the wedges from out the groove 9 & turns within the housing or case, & without actuating the sleeve S to turn the shaft S the said sleeve being keyed to the shaft S", the function of the apparatus being to turn the shaft S. If desired, however, the latter may connect directly with the under face of the housing D & the sleeve S be omitted & the brake-chain M wound directly onto the shaft S, the sleeve S performing merely the function of an intermediate connection between the housing or case & the shaft S. When the clutching-wheel & wedges are engaged so that the whole mechanism is turned to operate the shaft S, then the spring-detent d, engaging with the ratchet R, holds all the tension upon the brake thus attained & by means of its lever end in when the detent is tripped this tension is released. As the chain-brakes are usually operated on streetcars, the crank is turned with a continuous movement to increase the brake-pressure on the wheels & when, as it often occurs, that the crank in its rotation is at arms-length before the required tension upon the brake is had to move it further, is difficult from the position of the driver operating it. With my improvement when the crank is at arms length it may be turned back to a more convenient position for applying power to it, or the crank may be reciprocatingly rotated for a short distance at a time to apply pressure little by little & thus keep the crank-arm in-a position where it is easily handled. Having thus described my invention, what I claim & desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s.
    1. In a clutching-mechanism, the combination, with a shaft adapted to be rotated, of a housing or case that is made with a passage-way for said rotating shaft to turn therein & constructed with cams on its interior face, of a clutching-wheel that is keyed to turn with said shaft & constructed with a wedge-form perimetral groove, said clutching-wheel being arranged within said housing & wedges that are also arranged within said housing or case, adapted to be operated by said cams to engage with the perimetral groove of said clutching wheel, substantially in the manner as & for the purposes set forth.
    2. In a clutching mechanism, the combination, with a shaft adapted to be rotated, of a housing or case that is made with a passage-way for said rotating shaft to turn therein & constructed with cams & cam-stops on its interior face, of a clutching-wheel that is keyed to turn with said shaft, & constructed with a wedge-form perimetral groove, said clutching-wheel being arranged within said housing, & wedges that are also arranged within said housing or case, adapted to be operated by said cams to engage with the perimetral groove of said clutching-wheel, substantially in the manner as & for the purposes set forth.
    3. In a clutching mechanism for a streetcar brake, the combination, with the housing or case D, made with the passage-way p, cams G, cam-stops w & ratchet R, of the cutching-wheel V, made with perimetral groove g, keyed to the shaft S, & arranged within said housing, the wedges W arranged within said housing relatively. To the said cams & perimetral groove, as described, the sleeve S attached to the under side of said housing & to the shaft S & the detent d, constructed & arranged to be operated substantially as & for the purposes set forth.
Signed at Troy, New York, this 11th day of May, 1886, & in the presence of the 2 witnesses whose names are hereto written.

It is often a symptom of tabes dorsalis, which is a key finding in tertiary syphilis.

. Progressive Locomotor Ataxia symptoms result from degeneration of the dorsal roots of the spinal cord, giving it its name, which means “dorsal wasting.” The first manifestation is usually “lightning pain,” transient, stabbing pains affecting the legs; this is followed by loss of tendon reflexes & by progressive loss of muscular coordination (ataxia) causing a spasmodic, uneven walk. Victims become unable to sense pain, limb position, & temperature; these sensory deficits cause loss of bladder & sometimes bowel control, severe foot ulcerations, & Charcot joints (an osteoarthritis that typically involves the knees & hip). Neurologic deterioration also causes the pupils of the eye to lose their ability to react to changes in light.
