NOTE 2./ 1864 CENSUS FOR RE-ORGANIZING THE GEORGIA MILITIA

    SCHLEY COUNTY
13th Senatorial District-785th Militia District (later known as Lickskillett)

The re-organization of the militia for the state of Georgia, was by most at the time, felt to be vital for
the protection of the citizens of Georgia, during the later days of the war. All efforts to raise a militia
during these times met with failure as each time a unit was raised, it was taken into the Confederate Army. What was left at home, for the most part, were women, children, sole surviving sons, aged, invalids, recovering wounded, and those previously found unfit for service, for one reason or another. There was no homefront protection. There was no army of last resort.

This statewide census was ordered by Gov. Joe Brown in an attempt to find the necessary human and physical resources to provide a home guard.

NOTE 3: Historical Note: The Year Was 1818

The year was 1818 and the Convention of 1818decided the northern boundary of the United States and the southern boundary of Canada as being the 49th parallel, between the Lake of the Woods in Minnesota and the Rocky Mountains. The land west of the Rockies was under joint control of the U.S. and Britain. That boundary was settled in 1846 with the Oregon Treaty.

South of 49th parallel, Illinois was admitted as the twenty-first state. Initially the northern boundary was set just below the southern end of Lake Michigan, but at a population of around 36,000, Illinois was short of the necessary 60,000 minimum required for statehood. Illinois Congressional delegate, Nathaniel Pope, suggested that it would make better sense to move the boundary northward to include the City of Chicago and the area upon which the I & M Canal would be built, connecting the Great Lakes with the Mississippi River, and from there the Gulf of Mexico.

In the South, the First Seminole War resulted from the escalation of conflicts between the Seminoles and settlers who were moving into Seminole territory. The Seminoles provided a sanctuary for escaped slaves and this provided additional fuel for the fire. Andrew Jackson pursued the Seminoles into Florida, which was then under Spanish control. His victory led to the accession of Florida to the U.S. the following year.

In the Ohio River Valley, an epidemic of what was commonly called "milk sick" broke out and in October it claimed Abraham Lincoln's mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln. At the time, the illness was attributed to many things, but only a few suspected the real culprit. It wasn't until the early 1900s that it was determined that milk from cows that had eaten snakeroot caused the illness. By then it had claimed many other victims, the majority of them infants.

In literature, a young Mary Shelley's most famous book-- Frankenstein--was published. 1818 also marked the first time the Christmas hymn Silent Night was sung in the small Austrian village of Oberndorf.

NOTE 2./ History of Presidency during this time period

Historical Note: Andrew Jackson was President in 1832 when he ordered all Indians east of the Mississippi, to be moved West. This was one of the sadest edicts of this and for all time in the History of the United States. Andrew Jackson imposed his will on the Presidency, the people, the banking industry and the landscape of America. He was not a good delegator, and fired the members of his Cabinet, in some instances several times, when they would not do his exact bidding. He was a born fighter and dualed several times, and had two lead balls in his body from these contests. Jackson was censured by his Democratic Party for firing 3 Secretary of the Treasurys in order to change the Federal Banking methods. He was the only President to be censured. He was given the name "Jackass" by his Party, which soon became the symbol assumed by his Democratic Party. He was the first and last President to leave the Government debt free at his parting. Andrew Jackson used the Presidential veto 12 times, supassed only by Andrew Johnson (25), who took over after the assassination of Lincoln. As a final note, Johnson later missed being impeached by only one vote, because he did not want to punish the South, after the Civil War.

NOTE 1./ Pulaski County GaArchives History .....Hartford 1935 <>

In the east side of the Ocmulgee River, in Pulaski County, just opposite Hawkinsville, is a small village or hamlet located at the approach of the World War Memorial bridge. To the traveler passing through, the sight of two wooden stores and a few modest homes means nothing. Another view shows groups of enormous water oaks, clusters of immense cedars, probably more than a century
old, and trees of blooming crape myrtle.
This little hamlet is not a deserted suburb of Hawkinsville, as one might think, but it is all that is left of a once thriving city where men lived and prospered. It is known as "Old Hartford," one of Georgia's forgotten cities, yet a city with a history.
One of the chief distinctions claimed by Hartford is the fact that when the State capital was moved from Louisville to Milledgeville, Hartford came within one vote of being the capital of Georgia. Hartford was in pioneer days a factor in the history and politics of Georgia. Many years ago it was one of Georgia's frontier towns situated at the head of navigation on the Ocmulgee River and an
important point for political and military operations.

In 1831, the Baptist Church at Hartford was incorporated. which indicates that there was probably a Baptist Church there before that (p. 83) date. The trustees at that time were: Furney F. Gatlin. Stephen Mitchell, Wright Lancaster, Michael K. Singletary. and John Wallace.

    SCHLEY COUNTY

Henry Harrison Singletary, merchant-planter, La Crosse, Schley county, Ga., son of Nathan P. and Cassandra (Wright) Singletary, was born in Sumter county, Feb. 4, 1841. His grandfather, Thomas W. Singletary, was a native of South Carolina, came to Georgia when a young man and became
identified with the leading planters of Georgia. Mr. Singletary’s father was born in Laurens county, Ga., removed to Taliaferro county, Ga., and in 1836 came to Sumter county. Being a skilled mechanic he engaged in various kinds of woodwork, and helped to build a number of boats to run on the Ocmulgee river. Later in life he gave his entire time and attention to his plantation. His only public service was as a justice of the inferior court. Mr. Singletary was raised on the plantation and was educated at the common schools of the county. Early in 1862 he enlisted in Company B, Capt. J.C. Dunlap, Forty-sixth Georgia regiment, as a private, and served through the war. He was in the battles of Missionary Ridge, Chickamauga, Kennesaw Mountain, Jonesboro, Nashville and
Franklin. He came home from the war with only a few slight wounds as souvenirs, and without a dollar in the world went to work on a plantation. By close attention, hard work, by enterprise and good management he has forged ahead until he ranks among the foremost of Schley county’s farmers and businessmen. He has now more than 2,000 acres of choice land, which includes an excellent productive 100 acre peach orchard. In addition to his extensive planting interests he conducts one of the largest general merchandise stores in the county at La Crosse. Enterprising, prosperous and popular, Mr. Singletary has a bright future before him. Mr. Singletary has but two
children: Lydia C., and Cattie L., both of whom are graduates of the Southern Female College, La Grange, Ga.

    DEATH OF JUDGE SINGLETARRY
Hon. Henry Singletarry, of LaCrosse, died in New York City last Friday morning whither he went a
week or so ago seeking medical treatment. An operation for throat trouble was performed on last
Tuesday and from that time on he gradually grew weaker and weaker. Mrs. Singletarry was notified
of his condition on last Thursday morning, and immediately started for New York, but when she
reached Atlanta, a telegram announcing his death was awaiting her. However, she continued her
journey on, returning home Monday morning on the same train, with Judge Singletarry's body. His was a very sad death indeed, and was a great shock. Judge Singletarry was one of Schley county's most influential citizens, and perhaps, the most successful businessman in the county. He started in life poor and by his energy and straight forward business methods he had accumulated a nice little fortune, when the sad end came. His estate will amount to something like seventy five thousand dollars, which was divided between his widow, daughter, and grandchildren. His daughter, Mrs. Edwin Bell, being named Executrix of his estate. Funeral services were conducted from his home, at LaCrosse, Monday morning, Rev. W.K. Dennis officiating, a large company of friends were present to witness the ceremony. His body was laid to rest in the Ellaville cemetery.

Schley Co. marriage records indicate two marriages.
One or both may be him.

NOTE 1./ 1864 CENSUS FOR RE-ORGANIZING THE GEORGIA MILITIA

    Notes:

NOTE1./ The entire 1860 collection of Sumter County, Georgia, census images was reviewed at ancestry.com on 11-1-2002, by this author. The Thomas L Singletary, (age 30), family # 690, was living next door to the Artur Singletary, (age 40), family # 691. The only other Singletary in this 1860 Sumter census was a John Singletary, age 12, living with Ax (age 33), and his wife? Ridley, (age 18), Bafs? family #536. Beside this husband and wife?, this John Singletary, is the only other resident of this household. Interestingly enough, Family # 689, living beside these two aforementioned Singletary families, is that of Rise and Susan Bafs? and their 3 children. Thus, it would seem that this isolated John Singletary, age 12, would be a relation of some kind to the Singletary families # 690 & #691, and may have been arranged by the next door neighbour relationship of the Bafs family. Clearly however in 1860 in Sumter County Georgia, there were only two distinct Singletary family units with heads of household.

NOTE 2./ In the 1860 Sumter census, Families # 672 and # 685 are of the surname Suber, and both parents were born in South Carolina. However, there was no enumeration of an Ellen Hazeltine Suber, who would later become John Lock Singletary's wife. It seems that Ellen Hazeltine had married her 1st husband, Jesse Smith by the 1860 census, and was living with him in Randolph County, Georgia.

NOTE 4./ Short summary of the Battle of JACKSON, MISS. MAY 14TH, 1863 when John L Singketary was taken as a POW.

Jackson, Miss., May 14, 1863. 15th and 17th Army Corps. After the occupation of Raymond the Federals moved on Jackson, Sherman's corps (the 15th) moving by way of Mississippi Springs and McPherson's (the 17th) advancing on the Clinton road. During the early morning the rain came down in torrents, making the roads heavy and in some places almost impassable. By 10 a.m. Sherman was within 3 miles of the city and the sound of McPherson's guns was heard on the left. The enemy was discovered in the front of Sherman at a small bridge, and as the head of the Federal column appeared opened
with artillery. The 2nd and 3rd brigades of Tuttle's division were deployed to the right and left of the road and Waterhouse's and Spoor's batteries, placed on commanding ground, soon silenced the enemy's pieces, the whole Confederate force retiring about half a mile into a skirt of woods in front of Jackson. Mower's brigade (2nd) followed closely until the enemy took refuge in his intrenchments. The banks of the stream at this point were high bluffs, and the river could be crossed only at the bridge which the enemy did not attempt to destroy. As far as could be seen on either side were the Confederate intrenchments and a steady artillery fire which enfiladed the road was kept up from all points.
The 95th Ohio was taken from the reserve and sent to feel the Enemy's flanks. It was soon discovered that the intrenchments were abandoned where they crossed the railroad and Steele's division was pushed into the city that way, the rest of the column following on the main road. McPherson, meantime, had also been fighting severely but entered the city almost simultaneously with Sherman. The Federal loss was 42 killed, 251 wounded and 7 captured or missing. Brig.-Gen. John Gregg, commanding the Confederate forces at Jackson, roughly estimates his loss at 200 killed, wounded and missing; Union
    reports make it over 800.
