. History of the settlement of York - King & Toronto St., was was across from Robt. & Marg. Johnston's store.
The first owner of the lot was Thos Robert. Johnston, a carpenter, who held the property from the Toronto street lane to King St.
. 1834, opposite the Cathedral, on the southeast corner of Church & King, was a framed building known as the Checkered Store painted like a checker-board,
1st owner of the lot was Thos. & Robt. Johnston, a carpenter, who first held the property from Toronto St. ... lane to King St. ...In 1831 a man named R. A. Parker erected the Checkered Store, a 2 story frame building, selling notions, everything from a needle to an anchor. Ref: Globe Newspaper advertisement.
Note1: Opposite it to the eastward stood, the stood the gaol where Lout & Matthews suffered on the scaffold in the 1837 Rebellion.

This is the last WILL & Testament of me Robert Johnston of the City of Toronto, Carpenter. First pay my just funeral & testamentary + expenses. It is may will & desire that my beloved wife do receive & take the annual Rents & proceeds arising from my Real & personal Estate during her widowhood for the support of herself & the education support & maintenance of all my children. From & immediate after my said wife shall depart this life or they reach 21 years or marry, I devise & bequeath my Estate on King Street to my children as follows:
Son Richard: The lot & house on the corner of King & Toronto Streets in which Mr. Perrin now lives. [1834];
Daughter Mary Ann: The house & Lot adjoining the one devised to Richard;
Son Robert: The house & lot west of Mary' Ann's with the privilege to the secure belongings;
Son Thomas: The house & Lot west of Robert's with the privileges to the same belongings;
Daughters Margaret & Sarah: My Lot on Toronto St., north of the right of way, to the rear of the Lot before mentioned, to be equally divided between them, share & share alike;

To my 2 adopted children MARY & MARGARET.2 JOHNSTON, daughters of my brother Thomas [& therefore, also wife Margaret's sister's children - PJA]: The sum of £150 each on their arriving at age 21 or marriage. I desire that they may be supported in the same way as my own children out of my Estates.

. 1885 Sep 10 - An Immense Fortune. Prospective Millions, in which an Acton Family claims Legal Heirship.
Sometime ago we referred to the fact that Dr. Richard Johnston & family, residents of Acton & vicinity, were claimants of a large estate in England & that the Doctor was engaged in establishing his claims to a proportion of the estate. We are please to state that the prospects for the family coming into possession of their share of the property at no distant date are very encouraging., much more so in fact that in the majority of similar claims. The history of this estate - the celebrated Lawrence-Townley estate ...heirs of estates in England have for 40y. been making spasmodic efforts to get possession of the vast property, are now combining together to make a general investigation... enormous sum of $ 8 million ... by Act of British Parliament passed Aug 4, decided to pay over to all legal heirs their moneys.
In Toronto alone there are 20 families who have claims. One of the heirs will leave for England in a few weeks to compare notes with the London agent. Mr. Wm. Northcoate Geare, of 475 King St W is one of the heirs, is acting as agent, receiving correspondence. Mary Townely married John Lawrence in 1693 against the WILL of his parents, owing to religious differences. ... Millions of dollars have been spent in attempts to get possession of the estates.

He was a man of education & studied medicine with Dr. Ralph. Although not a regular practitioner, he performed a number of wonderful cures & seldom lost a case. He was skillful both as a physician & a nurse & was accurate in diagnosing. He was a sympathizer in the Rebellion of 1837-8 & was a Liberal in politics. At one time he owned considerable land in the heart of Toronto, owning the stores called "Checkered Stores."
In 1845 he set. in Waterdown, where he ran for M.P.P. He was a class leader in the Waterdown Methodist church & a Superintendent & teacher of the Sunday School. He has been twice married, first to Julia A. Teetzell, who d. age 34;
later he m. Mary Stevenson.

Robert J. was b. 1839 at Palermo. He purchased the west half of Lot 1, Con. 2, Erin, from the Canada Co., in 1865 & in 1874 bought the east half of Lot 2, Con. 2, which he cleared & erected buildings upon. He has raised a large family, who are representative citizens of to-day. In 1865 he m. Martha Leslie.

Beautiful cameo photo of Mary Ann Johnston. Bright eyes, clear of a healthy & respectful women. She is seated at a small covered table with books, 'Thinking.' She has traces of smile.
Age possibly mid fifties. The Victoria dress should be dateable: plain 'grey' skirt with medium dark lace over top, short ruffles on her shoulders & chest, also ruffles on the wrists; white kerchief around her next with male cameo broach; a ribbon necklace with dangling broach is partially visible. She wears bracelet, possible black stone & on the other wrist she wears a double metal jointed band which is an inch & half wide. Earrings are possibly clip on.
She appears to have light short? brown hair parted in the middle. Distinctive Victoria white & black lace or ribbon, dangling house -headdress - with two or so prominent black centre pieces. (1865ish is an estimate).
Over her dress she is wearing a dark printed flower shawl, hanging just off her shoulders.

Across the road from Marg. & Sarah's home is Toronto's first Post Office, located at 260 Adelaide Street East. It was built in 1834 & from here we can almost hear the voices of the Johnstons, Lawrences & Willsons posting a letter or opening news from New Jersey. Today it is both an operating post office & a museum (2010). - PJ Ahlberg.

. 1978 Nov 29 - The Siloam Brick Church as it was commonly called, was Methodist Episcopal Church, built by Eli Snyder, On the north westerly corner Lot 32, Con 3, Esquesing, & founded 1862. The erection of this church & the organization of a church society was the outcome of gracious revival at a camp meeting held in a beech & maple grove one lot east, across the road from the Churchill Cemetery. The erection of the Brick Church was an important event in the annals of the Community. The families most intimately associated with the enterprise were the Snyders, Leslies & the Johnston & others. ...Time saw numerous changes it was attached to Rockwood circuit. ...Regretfully closed in 1920 the membership was transferred to Acton Church ...The brick from the church were purchased by Mr. Basil Johnston, Lot 2 & used to brick his house.
. Orwell Johnson members got to Sunday School in a the little brick church. & traveling up the First Line from his family farm behind a trotting horse. The Johnston family didn't take Hwy. 7 to reach the corner of Hwy. 25 & Town Boundary where the church was situated. There were no paved highways in 1909. Instead the horse would travel his familiar route fromFirst Line along a sidereal now long gone, beside harry Murray's farm to Town boundary & Second Line.
Mr. Johnston remembers being taught by Mrs. Albert McKeown, mother of our presents postmaster. He loved the classes although they were very different from present day Sunday School. Both Clarence & Orwell enjoyed their Sun. School days although they maintained they were well behaved boys not getting into mischief. I had to behave - I had strict father. If a I let a hymn book fall, he would take me out & lick (punish) me.
At one point a fierce storm blew the church roof off & flattened the driving sheds. The congregation clubbed together & repaired the damaged with a few days but Orwell Johnston fells the church started to go downhill from then on. Photo of Mr Mrs. O Johnston, seated, apparently in a house.

Robert Johnson was elected trustee for the Leslie section last Wednesday. We have not learned who was chose for the 4th line.

The Johnston Farm
. E 1/2 Lot 2, Con. 2, was taken from the Crown in 1823, & changed hands several times before it was purchased by James Leslie in 1841. In 1873, at the death of James Leslie, this 100 acres was willed to his daughter, Martha & her husband, Robert Johnston.
The first log house was built far back from the road, with part of it being over a never-failing spring. A new home was built by Robert Johnston, closer to the road, with the front part being added in 1892. Married in 1865, Robert & Martha Johnston had a family 6 sons & 6 daughters. Robert died in 1911, & the youngest son, Basil, succeeded to the farm. 3 years later he married Catherine Gray, & they had 1 son & 1 daughter. In 1939 Basil Johnston died, as the result of an accident. His son, Elwood purchased the farm in 1943. He married Mary Cutts, & they have a family of 3 daughters & 1 son. They operated a dairy farm, & also own 100 acres, Lot 3, 3rd line.

Mrs. Fernley came to Acton from her home at Brantford last Christmas [1896] & has ever since been lying ill at the home of her brother, Robert Johnston, Esq. After much suffering, death came to her relief on Tuesday morning. Mrs. Fernley was the eldest daughter of the late "Dr" Richard L. Johnston & was married to Mr. Joseph Fernley about 19 years ago. [1878]. Mr. Fernley died at London some 15 years ago [1882]. Mrs. Fernley was a confiding Christian & died trusting her Saviour. The funeral will take place this afternoon to the cemetery at Churchill.

"After a prolong illness death came to Mrs. Pentland, at her home at Penplena, Cal. on Monday Nov. 28. Mrs. Pentland's children & immediate relatives were present at the time of her sleeping. She had been in full health since last April. Afterwards she suffered extremely so that all were thankful when the end came in peaceful rest.
She entered into rest on the same date as her wedding day, Nov 28th.
Mrs. Pentland was the xxx of 10 children of late Mr. & Mrs. R L Johnston, who lived in Acton bet. 50 - 60 years ago. Of the 6 sons & 4 dau, the living here, Mrs. Rxx Little, widow of the late Robt. July 16, 1884Wed - Accident to Argonauts: On Monday night the four-oared crew of the Argonaut, made up of Whittemore, Langmuire, Davidson & Wyatt, were out for a spin on the Toronto Bay in their new papermache boat. When coming between the Aileen & the Oriole at anchor, they struck a boat with twp. half drunken chaps in it, & broke off over 4 feet of the shell. One dingy put off the the Oriole & picked up the 2 men of the skiff & another from the Aileen picked up the crew. Some of the parties had narrow escape. The crew will have trouble in replacing their boat in time for the races.

Miss Melissa Jane Johnston, who lived in Acton almost all her life was interred in Fairview cemetery Tuesday after funeral service at the Rumley Funeral Home. Miss Johnston who lived with her sister, Mrs. W G Gamble, on Park Ave., passed away on Saturday. She would have been 90 year of age next month.
Eldest daughter of the late Robt. P Johnston & Martha Leslie, she was born in 1866 in Erin Twp.
She was a member of Acton United Church & Rev Gordon Adams officiated at the funeral. Pallbearers were Lloyd; Wil & Elmore Johnston; Clarence Gamble, Friends & neighbors carried the floral tributes. Interment was in Fairview cemetery.

. The main road from Guelph to Toronto followed the Old York Trail through Crewson's Corners to Ballinafad. The Old York Trail was the main road from Guelph to Toronto. In the 1850s the Grand Trunk Railway came with a straight line running due west from Acton to Rockwood. This line just missed the corner by a few rods.

Crewsons Corners is comprised of the corners of 4 townships in 2 counties, the south corner of the Town of Erin, the east corner of Guelph Eramosa, in Wellington, the west corner of Esquesing & the north corner of Nassagaweya, in Halton Hills. Crewsons Corners was in close proximity to the Old York Trail, the main road from Guelph to Toronto, now known as Highway # 7. Although the Grand Trunk Railway passes closely to Crewsons Corners, the station was built in Acton. The small community consisted of a general store, post office, Methodist Church, a succession of schools, a brickyard & sawmill. Telephone came to Crewsons Corners in 1910. It was first called Ryckman's Corner after Samuel Ryckman, the surveyor, who laid out Eramosa and Nassagaweya but later changed to Crewsons Corners for the first family to live in the area.

. 1955 Aug 25, Obituary2: Life Long Resident R L Johnston Passes
A life-long & highly respected resident of Acton & district. Richard Lawrence Johnston passed away on Sunday morning at Guelph General hospital. He was in his 88th year & had been in failing health for the past 6 months.
Born in Erin Twp. February 9, 1868, he was the son of the late Robert Johnston & Martha Leslie, who were pioneer farmers of this district. He too was a son of the soil as were his forebears & until 1930 farmed successfully on the first Line of Esquesing. For the past 25 years he has resided at 13 Wilburn Street in Acton, but when health permitted he enjoyed many a day on the farm, assisting his sons, who carry on this work.
In May 1898, he married Virena Ramshaw, who with 2 sons remain to revere the memory of a loving & kindly husband & father. A daughter, Edna (Mrs. M. C. Overholt) predeceased him a few years ago. The sons Orwell & Roy both reside on the home farm.
One brother, Robert of Rockwood, & 5 sisters also remain. Miss Melissa Johnston, Mrs. J. H. Reid & Mrs. Wm. Gamble of Acton:
Mrs. Ernest Near, Toronto & Mrs. A D Bridges of Victoria, BC.
To all of these sympathy of many friends in this community goes in their bereavement.
Richard Johnston was a quiet & solid citizen. He was a member of the United Church & served on the Board of Trustees. He sought no public office but those who knew them admired him for his reliability & steadfastness in things that were good.
The funeral service as conducted by Rev R H Armstrong at the Rumley Funeral Home. Here many friends gathered on Tuesday afternoon to pay tribute to a life they admired. Many floral tributes also bore testimony of respect & sympathy.
Pallbearers were Messrs. Gordon Johnston, Acton; Lloyd Johnston, Rockwood; Ernest Near, Toronto Mr. Hamlin, Toronto; Clarence Gamble, Acton; Elwood Johnston, Acton.

A very happy & enjoyable family picnic was pend at the home of Mr Mrs Wm. Gamble, Eramosa.
The descendants of the late Mr Mrs Rober Johnston composed the gathering & represented 3 generations. 2 dau. of , Mrs Jas. H Reed & Mrs Wm. Gamble celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary during this year & one dau. Mrs A D Bridges from Cranbrook BC was able to be present, making the family gather ing a very pleasant occasion. The 82 who picnicked at Gamble home enjoyed the afternoon in various ways. The men of the second generation played ball, while the children were entertained by rides on a Shetland pony.
A table on the lawn was spread with good things to eat & all enjoyed this part of the picnic. Recitations were given by some of the children & short speeches by the grooms of 50 years ago & by Rev Ward of Rockwood, who was present & took moving picture of the gathering.

Mrs. James Henry Reed, who had spend her entire life in Acton & district, passed away at the Maynard Nursing Home, Toronto, on Tuesday, February 6th, 1962. Her husband predeceased her in Oct. 26, 1960. They had celebrated their 67th(?) wedding anniversary 7 years before in March 1953.
Lydia Martha Reed was b. Oct 27, 1869, Daughter of Robert Prime Johnston & Lydia Martha Johnson, on the farm presently occupied by Elwood Johnston, Wellington Co.
She married James H Reed on Mar. 1, 1893 at the Johnston homestead, Lot 22, First Line, Erin, where Mr. Reed was b. 1876 & after 10 years on the 200 A. farm, he sold it to his brother-in-law & moved to Acton to reside in 1904. They lived in their Main St. home for over half a century.

Family Survives: She is survived by her daughter Luella, Mrs. H. I. Brignall & Harold, both of Toronto. There are 3 grandchildren & 7 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by 4 brothers & 2 sisters: sisters surviving are Mrs. Gamble, Acton, Mrs. Near, Toronto & Mrs. Bridges, Victoria, BC.

After being in Flynn's Nursing Home for 4 years, she was taken to Toronto where she had been the past 9 months. She was a ember of Acton United Church. The Rev. Dwight I Engel conducted the service at the Rumley-Shoemaker funeral home on Fri. Feb 9th. Interment was in Fairview.
When Mr. & Mrs. Reed moved to Acton there were only 2 industries here - Beadmore & Co., & the Storey Glove Co. Street light was by oil lamps. In 1912 Mr. Reed had one of the 3 automobiles in town, a T-Ford touring car with 50 gallon drum for gas, which was 10 cents a gallon. Both were active in church work & were naturally very well-known to a host of people of several generations.

The wedding repast was thoroughly enjoyed. The bridal gifts were numerous & much admired.

A very happy & enjoyable family picnic was pend at the home of Mr Mrs Wm. Gamble, Eramosa.
The descendants of the late Mr Mrs Rober Johnston composed the gathering & represented 3 generations. 2 dau. of , Mrs Jas. H Reed & Mrs Wm. Gamble celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary during this year & one dau. Mrs A D Bridges from Cranbrook BC was able to be present, making the family gather ing a very pleasant occasion. The 82 who picnicked at Gamble home enjoyed the afternoon in various ways. The men of the second generation played ball, while the children were entertained by rides on a Shetland pony.
A table on the lawn was spread with good things to eat & all enjoyed this part of the picnic. Recitations were given by some of the children & short speeches by the grooms of 50 years ago & by Rev Ward of Rockwood, who was present & took moving picture of the gathering.

. 1907 Jun 6, Death of Charles B. Johnston.
Charles Benajah Johnston, son of Mr. Robt. Johnston, 2nd line, died rather suddenly on Saturday morning at the age of 30 years. The deceased had been subject for some years to epilepsy & this was undoubtedly the cause of death. Mr. Johnston had been farming what is known as the old Sharp place, on the second line, for some years, & was highly esteemed. He was a member of Siloam Methodist Church. He had an exceedingly happy home, & leaves a wife & 3 children. The funeral was held from the home on Monday at 2p.m. to Fairview Cemetery, Rev. D. H. Taylor, of Rockwood, officiating.

. 1929 May 16, Thrus. The sale of the farm of N H Black in Eramosa to Robert Johnston, Rockwood, notes the passing of the property from the family of the Blacks for the first time. It has ben owned & occupied by Mr. Black or his forebears every since it was surveyed from prevail forest over 100 years ago.

. 1961 Jul 27 -Death came suddenly for Robert Edwin Johnston, RR 4, Rockwood, Monday July 24. He was in his 81st year. He was former farm resident of the Acton District.
Born on the homestead on the second line of Erin, he married the late Helena Maude Ramshaw in 1940, & has resided at this present residence since 1920. The homestead is now occupied by Elwood Johnston, a nephew.
A member of Rockwood United church, he leaves to mourn his loss 2 sons Lloyd & Edgar & 1 daughter, Ethel (Mrs. David Gray) all of Rockwood, 3 grandchildren, Robert, Esabel & Kenneth & 1 great grandchild, Elizabeth. Also surveying are 3 sisters: James Reed, Acton, Mrs Wm. Gamble, Acton & Mrs. Atlee Brdges, Toronto. He was the son of the late Robert Johnston & Martha Leslie.

The home of Mrs. Wm Nelles, Nassagaweya, was the seen of a very pretty wedding, on Wed. Sep 16, when her daughter, Gertrude Burns, became the bride of Mr. Frederick Orwell Johnston, fourth son of Mr. Robt Johnston, Erin. Promptly at 2:30 p.m. sounded the strains of the Lohengrin Wedding March, played by Mrs. Wm. Nelles, Jr., of Guelph, the wedding part took their place on the front verandah, under an artistically decorated arch, where Rev D H Taylor of Rockwood, pastor of the contracting parties, pronounced over them those magic words which blend for life 2 hearts together. The bride was becomingly attired in an exquisite gown of white Panama silk, trimmed with satin & allover lace, & carried a shower bouquet of lilies of the valley & also wore a spray of the same in her hair.
Miss Ida Johnston, sister of the groom, acted as bridesmaid & was neatly gowned in white organdy, carrying a bouquet of pink roses. Little Jessie ? Graham, niece of the bride, tastily attired in white silk & carrying a basket & wreath of white, pink & blue asters made a charming little flower girl. Mr. Robt. Nelles, brother of the bride, was groomsman. The ceremony being over & the usual congratulations extended, the guests, to the number 150, retired to the rear lawn where a sumptuous repast awaited them. Luncheon over a social evening was spent in pleasant intercourse, music, songs & addresses.The young couple were the recipients of many valuable & useful presents. On the following morning Mr & Mrs Johnston left for a trip to Hamilton & other points. Mrs. Johnston travelled in a suit of brown lady's cloth, hat to match & point d'esprit over white ilk waist. On their return they will take up their residence on "Sunnyside Farm", Erin, where they will be followed by the warm congratulations & best wishes of their many friends.

. 1937 Nov 25, Cornor's Inquest, hell an inquest into death of Wm. Winston Woyace of Caledon on Tues., when the jury brought in the following verdict. WW Woyce came to his death from shock & internal hemorrhages sustained in an impact of car drives north on Hy 10, Oct 30th at the foot of Slago Hill when Woyce can was struck by a truck. At 5 o'clock 85 were seated at beautifully decorated tables ladened with good things to eat, in the the driving house. This made a very handy & comfortable setting. For desert there was ample ice-cream & strawberries. Recognition was made of a substantial sum of money received from Mrs Margaret Johnston Bridges, who was unable to attend.
A short program followed the supper hour, with Reeve D D Grey acting as a capable chairman. Grace was spoken by James H Reed, action & an address of welcome given by Fred Johnston. Reading by Alfreda Winters, a recitation by Muriel Allan & reading by Mrs Edgar Johnston fellowed.
Lawrence Johnston & Clark Winters preformed a humorous sound directed by Mrs Elwood Johnston Historical events given by James H Reed were appreciated.On behalf of the gathering assembled thanks to the host & hosts, Mr Mrs Fred Johnston were expressed by Elwood Johnston. Attending this happy family gathering from cottages of a distance of 125 mils were Mrs Mrs Robt. Near & Carylyn & Mr Mrs Elmer Johnston & Roy. The singing of God be With You Till We Meet Again brought the program to a close.
Pictures were taken before departing o the Johnston family, including the 4 generations of the Reed family Mr Mrs James H Reed & Mr Mrs Wm. Gamble were married 58 years ago.
A collection received will buy a suitable gift for Franky McPherson who is ill in Vancouver. Dishes were gathered in readiness for home after a very enjoyable afternoon together.

A life-long resident of Erin Twp., Fredrick Orwell Johnston of RR 3 Acton died suddenly on New Year's Day 1953, Mr. Johnston who was a farmer, was born in 1882 Erin Twp., son of the late Robert Johnston & Lydia Leslie. In Sept 1908 he was married in Nassagaweya, his wife survives him.

He attended Acton United church & Rev E A Currey conducted the funeral service on Jan 5. Acting as pallbearers were 6 nephews: Orwell Johnston, Elmer Johnston, Lloyd Johnston, Elwood Johnston, Clarence Gamble & Cecil Nellis. Other nephews of the deceased, acting flower bearers were Roy Johnston, Edgar Johnston, Robert Near, Gordon Johnston, Marsell Nellis Henry Neillis & Alert Gamble.
Interment was in Fairview cemetery.
Surviving as well as his wife are 4 children: Mrs. Alfred Winter (Eva), Oustie: Mrs Chester Allen (Florence); William & Mrs Lloyd Burt (Eileen) all of Erin twp.
Two brothers: Richard of Acton & Robert of Rockwood;
& 5 sisters: Melissa, Acton; Mrs James Reid (Lydia), Acton; Mrs. W Gable (Mary), Acton, Mrs E Near (Ida), Toronto & Mrs A Bridges (Margaret) of Victoria, BC, also remain. He had 14 grandchildren.

. What caught my attention was not the freshly cut grass but the lack of a driveway & boarded up windows. I decided to pull over & approach the house directly across from the location to speak with the owners & let them know my intentions & ended up getting a good chunk of history on the abandoned homestead. Despite owning the land around the house & being the caretakers for the ground the couple across the street do not own the abandoned house. The abandoned house originally belonged to a Orwell Johnson/Johnston from the early 1900's to the late 1990's. Orwell remembered the road initially being nothing more than a cattle & wagon trail in his early childhood, with the surrounding lands being used for crops. After Orwell's death the family sold the home to the current owner who decided to lease the location as development was out of the question with the house on the greenbelt. After a couple lousy tenants the house was leased. The owner decided to board up the place out of pure frustration & it now sits empty & boarded up.

On Wednesday, June 30th, a very happy event took place at "Maple Grove," the home of Mr & Mrs Robert Johnston, 2nd Line Erin Twp., when their daughter Ida May was united in marriage to Mr. Ernest Herbert Near, eldest son of Mr & Mrs Wm. Near, 2nd line, Erin Twp. In the presence of the immediate relatives of the families. The bridge entered the room on the arm of her father to the strains of the wedding march played by Miss Margaret near, sister of the groom. The young couple, who were unattended, stood under a beautiful arch, tastefully decorated with hawthorn blossoms, honeysuckles & ferns. The ceremony was performed by Rev D H Taylor of Rockwood. The bride looked very sweet in her bridal dress of white silk made in semi-princesses style & trimmed with vaioncpaneurs? lace & intertrim. He wore a veil of white tulle & carried a bouquet of lilies of the valley. Her traveling suit was of navy blue ladies' cloth with white hat. After receiving the congratulations of the company all adjourned to the dining room & partook of a dainty repast after which happy speeches were made by Rev Mr Taylor & others, all xx the high entours? in which the young couple are hold. Mr & Mrs Near left on the 6.25 train on their honeymoon trip to Toronto, Niagara Falls & other points & will be "At Home" after August 1st, at 73 Turnbull? ave., Detroit, Mich.

. The house of Robt. P Johnston, Esq, Lot 2, Con 2, Erin, Lot 2, Con 2, was the scene of a very happy event on Friday afternoon last when Miss Margaret E, youngest dau. of Mr & Mrs. Johnston, became the bride of Mrs. Alex D Bridges, Secretary of the Carbondaler Lumber Co., of Coleman, Alberta.
Ferns & carnations decorated the drawing room. At 1 o'clock to the stains of Lahangrain's wedding march, played by Mrs E H Near, of Detroit, the contracting parties took their places. The bride was given away by her father. She looked charming gowned in white duchess malian? & carrying a bouquet of bridal roses & lily of the valley.
Miss Joan Heidgns? of Cranbrook BC, was bridesmaid & looked pretty gowned in blue silk & carrying a bouquet of pink carnations. Mr Basil O L Johnston supported the groom. Rev W H Douglas, pastor of the bride, performed the ceremony in the presence of the x relatives of the contracting parties.
After receiving the congratulations of their friends, adjournment was mad to the dining room where a sumptuous wedding dinner was partaken of. The bride is one of the most highly x young ladies of this locality & was the recipient of many beautiful & costly presents including a check for a handsome x from the father of the parents.
The bride's travelling dress was of blue ladies cloth with hat to match. The happy couple left on the 9 pm. train for Toronto, Niagara Falls & other points.

There is x of romance? in this union of hearts. Miss Johnston, while on a visit to Cranbrook, became aquatinted with Mr. Bridges, who was a prominent x man of that place. The friendship then found room, love & thus the representative of this want & thus have been united in the holy bonds of matrimony. Mr & Mrs Bridges will shortly leave for their home in Coleman? where they carry with them the best wishes of a very large circle of friends.

A very happy & enjoyable family picnic was pend at the home of Mr Mrs Wm. Gamble, Eramosa.
The descendants of the late Mr Mrs Rober Johnston composed the gathering & represented 3 generations. 2 dau. of , Mrs Jas. H Reed & Mrs Wm. Gamble celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary during this year & one dau. Mrs A D Bridges from Cranbrook BC was able to be present, making the family gather ing a very pleasant occasion. The 82 who picnicked at Gamble home enjoyed the afternoon in various ways. The men of the second generation played ball, while the children were entertained by rides on a Shetland pony.
A table on the lawn was spread with good things to eat & all enjoyed this part of the picnic. Recitations were given by some of the children & short speeches by the grooms of 50 years ago & by Rev Ward of Rockwood, who was present & took moving picture of the gathering.

The death occurred suddenly at Victoria, BC on April 7 of Mrs. Atlee Bridges, the former Margaret Ellen Johnston, well known to many of this district, in her 79th year.
She was the daughter of the late Robt. Johnson & his wife Martha Leslie, & was born in Erin Township on the second line on the farm now owned by nephew, Elwood Johnston.
She was married to her husband, Atlee Bridges, Cranbrook in 1910. They lived in Cranbrook for many years till they retired to Victoria 21 year ago.
She leaves her husband at home, 3 daughters:

Mrs John Lowry &
Mrs Hugh Oates of Singapore, Malaysia,
a sister, Mrs Ida Near of Toronto,

. 1914 Jun 14 - Johnston - Cutis Wedding on Sat. in St. Alban's Church decorated with pink & white gladioli & pink carnation was the scene of the charming Autumn wedding of Constance Mary MOLLY Cutis, only daughter of Mr & Mrs C E Curtis, & Robert Elwood Johnston, son of Mrs. Basil Johnston & the late Mr. Johnston. Rev. W G Luxton officiated.
Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore long-sleeved gown of white slipper martin with cathedral trail. The yoke of white net ended in a fitted bodice embroidered in brocade & seed pearls, & the floor length veil of French net was caught in a beaded coronet. Miss Cutis carried a cascade bouquet of white roses & gladioli & wore the groom's gift of triple strand pearls.
Mrs. J H Hare, matron of honor, wore ice blue satin, matching feather trimmed hat & carried pin roses & gladioli. Mr. Allan Grey, Delhi, was groomsman. Earnest Near, of Toronto & Allan Curtis of Oakville were ushers.
For travelling, the bride donned a pearl grey wool suit, wine hat & matching accessories & double mink scarf.
After a motor trip to the States, the couple will reside at their home near Acton.

. 1939 Fall Fatal to Erin District Farmer - Basil Johnston, 51 farm in Erin was killed last Wednesday, on the old homestead about 2 m. north of Acton. Johnston & his son Elwood were unloading hay in the barn & the father was standing in front of the lad. He lost his balance & fell, striking his head on the barn door.
Mr. Johnston was an elder in the United Church or a number of years. He was also a member of the Acton Fall Fair board - & a director of the Acton Agr. Society. Beside the son, his widow & a daughter, Laura at home, survive.

Obituary, James Marshall Fernley,
On Wednesday of last week [ Oct 23 1925]' there died at his home in Toronto one of Nature's noblemen, in the person of Marshall Fernley. Mr. F. had been sited with an affection of the hear valves a few days previously & succumbed after a brave fight for live, leaving his devoted wife & family in great sorrow by their sudden bereavement.
Mr F was a son of Joseph Fernely, for many years an esteemed resident of Acton, most of which was spent on the Abram Matthews farm on which Mr G H Switzer no leaves. He spend his youth and manhood in Acton. About 40 years ago married Miss Diana , daughter of Mr & Mrs John Matthews. A very happy married life followed & Mrs Fernley & their son & 2 daughters survive him.
Several years after their marriage Mr & Mrs Fenley removed to Brantford where he was engaged in Mercantile business.
About 20 years as Toronto was chosen as their future home & there he have rested ever since. Mr. F. being engaged in the insurance business, latterly as inspector of agencies of the Northern Life Assurance Co.
From his youth Marshall Fernley was posses of sterling character & high principles. Action upon the example of his Master, Jesus Christ, he went about doing good. Where sickness or need was helens a helping hand. His tender love & solicitude for those who were suffering was admirable. As a Christian worker in organized church & community he was a valued character. He died holding the important position of Superintendent ofSunday School of North Parkdale United Church. Incidentally it is significant that for 27 years this important Sunday School has been controlled by Acton boys. Mr S H Moore was the superintendent & when he returned to untie with a school nearer his place of residence, his immediate successor was J M Ferney who for 13 years has carried it forward with splendid success.
I was hugely through Mr F. initiative & effort that a commodious modern Sunday School building was erected half a dozen years ago.
Mr. Fernley dies in his 61st year. A public funeral was held on Friday afternoon from North Park United church, Rev J Norris Gray, being in charge. Internment was made at Park Lawn Cemetery.

The remains of Miss Annie Swackhammer, whose sudden death was referred to in last issue of the FREE PRESS, were brought from Trafalgar last Thursday to the home of her grandfather, Mr. C. Swackhammer. The funeral was held from there on Friday morning. She had been visiting friends in Trafalgar & intended returning to her home at Hannon last Wednesday but the day before was seized with acute inflammation & succumbed in a few hours. During their residence here she will be remembered as possessing a bright, joyous, disposition, & that she was a great help & comfort to her parents, who mourn her sudden demise very keenly.

. FATAL SHOOTING IN ERIN.
Peter Wylie, a Farm Hand, Shot & Almost Instantly Killed Berdina Swackhamer. WYLIE ARRESTED IN ACTON.
A deplorable fatal shooting case occurred at the home of Thomas Austin Swackhamer, fourth line, Erin, about 4 miles from Acton, last Saturday evening between 6 & 7 o'clock. Berdina, Mr. Swackhamer's only daughter, was shot & almost instantly killed by a Scotch lad of 15 known as Peter Wylie or Peter Wilson. Wylie is 15 years of age & was brought to Canada about 3 years ago by Rev. Peter Wilson, a mission worker in Toronto, who resides at 92 Scollard Street.
In September of last year Rev. Mr. Wilson & Mrs. Wilson & young Wylie were visiting in Erin & during the visit arranged for the lad to spend a year with Mr. William Bingham on his farm, lot 10, second line. He had spent about 11 months there, but he & Mr. Bingham disagreed about something & he left a week or so after & went to Mr. Darins Kennedy's, where he was acquainted. Mr. Kennedy is a near neighbour of Mr. Swackhamer & the 2 farmers frequently exchanged work. It appears that Kennedy was to have helped Swackhamer on Thursday last with his turnips, but was taken ill & Wylie was sent over to tell of the trouble. The lad appears to have changed the message & instead, explained that he had been sent to help with the work, though what his motive was in so doing is not apparent, unless he wished in that way to get away from that section. Though he was set to work, he did little, so Mr. Swackhamer says. On Saturday the work was finished & Mr. Swackhamer intended Wylie should go back to Kennedy's that evening. In fact, Mrs. Swackhamer said to her husband when they were picking berries together, a few minutes before the tragedy: "I wish you would send Peter back at once; I am afraid something will happen from his careless, meddlesome ways."

On Saturday night Wylie was to go back to Kennedy's & in the afternoon, after returning from bathing with Master Frank Swackhamer, Mr. Swackhamer told the lad to assist with the chores. He paid no attention to the request, but, going into a shed secured the stock of an old gun. Stanley, one of Mr. Swackhamer's sons, was hitching up to drive into Acton & Wylie pointed the stock of the gun with a threat to shoot both lad & horse. He obeyed the order to stop his threats & the gun stock was returned to the carpenter's chest where it was kept. The rig then started for Acton & Wylie & Berdina, the 13-year-old daughter of the house, went as far as the gate with Stanley. Arrived there the former demanded to go to Acton, but was refused, as he was not in a presentable condition. Some words then ensued between the lads & in somewhat of a temper Wylie is said to have started back towards the house, Berdina following him. Arrived at the woodshed, where he had secured the stock, the lad got up & reached down a gun, which Mr. Swackhamer left there to shoot foxes, which of late, had been bothering his poultry. When, all unsuspecting, the girl entered the door, it was to find herself confronted with the weapon & to receive the full charge in the upper part of her body. Her left arm was almost torn off, the lungs were riddled & some of the main arteries severed.

At the time this was taking place the mother & father were picking berries in the rear of the house. They heard the report of the gun & upon hurrying around, were met by Wylie, who exclaimed, "I have shot Berdina." This was found to be only too true, for lying in a pool of blood, the parents were horrified to see the body of their only daughter. She was carried into the house, but expired in a few minutes.

The perpetrator of the deed in the meantime lost no time in making his escape. He came to Acton & was at the G.T.R. station when his whereabouts were discovered, & Chief Lawson placed him in the cells. Wylie appeared to be entirely unconcerned. He contends the shooting was accidental, that he was taking down the gun when it discharged & that he had no intention of doing harm to the girl. On the road to Acton the accused met several parties to whom he mentioned the shooting. An inquest was opened by Coroner Savage at Guelph on Sunday the following being enpannelled a jury: John McIntyre, George Rozell, Edw. Atkinson, J. Atkinson, Albert Smith, John Thomas, Lewis Atkinson, John Davis, James Sprowl, Hiram Fisher, Arthur Thompson & Nathaniel Ismond. The boy Wylie remained in the cells here from Saturday night until Monday, when County Constable Merryweather, of Guelph took him to Guelph gaol. The inquest was adjourned on Sunday, after viewing the remains, until Wednesday at two o'clock in the fourth line school house. The young lad who was the cause of this tragical event does not look like a criminal or vindictive character.

In conversation with the FREE PRESS Mr. Hugh McCutcheon, who knows him quite well, says he is not naturally a bad boy, but his training has evidently been sadly neglected. He thinks that if he were placed under good discipline & given the training a boy of his years should have, that he would grow into a useful manhood. He is bright & alert & could be readily taught any useful trade. The sad circumstance has been a terrible blow to Mr. & Mrs. Swackhamer, who have been lifelong & highly esteemed residents of the vicinity. Reeve Swackhamer, of Acton is a brother. The funeral on Monday afternoon was largely attended. A very effective service was conducted at the home by Rev. J. H. Taylor, assisted by Rev. R. J. Drysdale & interment took place in the family plot at Churchill. Messrs. Arthur & Clinton Swackhamer, Roy Wansborough, Robert & Richard Leavens & Basil Johnston were the pall bearers.

. Guelph, Aug. 7. - (Special) - Peter Wylie, the farm hand who shot Berdina Swackhamer, of Erin township, is now in Guelph jail, having been brought from Acton to-day by High Constable Merryweather. Wylie maintains that the shooting was accidental, & seems to realize the gravity of the situation in which he is placed. He says he was not aware that the gun was loaded, but Frank Swackhamer, brother of the dead girl, states he told Wylie on Thursday that it was. Some of the circumstances appear to favour the boy. He did not leave the scene of the shooting until he told her father what he had done. On the way to Acton he told the driver who took him over that he had shot the Swackhamer girl, & that he had a postcard from his father asking to meet him at Acton. The case is perplexing the authorities. It is stated that malice can scarcely be established. Her body was interred in Churchill Cemetery, Acton Esquesing Twp., Halton Co. Ontario,

The death of Mrs. John Watson, Young Street, which occurred somewhat suddenly on Monday afternoon, was a sad blow to this happy home. Mr Mrs Watson came to Acton from London, Eng., about 2 years ago. They purchased from Mr. Frank Swackhamer the cosy home they occupied on Young Street & were doing well in this new land. 10 days ago their first babe came to bless the home & the cup of happiness was full. A few days after Mrs. Watson was taken seriously ill, & on Monday afternoon death came with little warning. The remains will be interred at Fairview Cemetery this afternoon at a private funeral.

Apparently not noticing the close proximity of Belt Line Care 511 ... just as she reached the north track, the car struck her, falling forward, her head struck the bumper. The blow was rec. just behind the right ear & ruptured a blood vessel on the brain, caused paralysis & death with the brief period of 10 minutes. Mr F B Whittemore who was passing when the accident occurred, hurried to the unfortunate girl's assistance & carried her to the boulevard. It first it was thought that she & simply fainted from shock.
Eye-witnesses beside the motorman were Miss My Hudson, nurse in Western Hospital & Mr. H T Whittemore, both of who were passing at the time & lawyer Canniff who saw the occurrence from the verandah of Mrs Wilks house, 118 Bloor St. East.

. 1915 OCT 29 - REV. C. McQuesten from his mother. - Yesterday we had a call from Holton Whittemore & his friend Jan Norman, who had come up to interview Gen. Logie. So they stayed for dinner & after phoning Mrs. Logie got the General at the club & he received them at head-quarters. They came back much impressed with his soldierly bearing, very stern at first, because he thought they were trying to get ahead of their superior officer in Toronto, but when they explained he was very nice. Holton said Reggie & his bride took tea with them the night before, so I sent off their present. I had got a very pretty plate with an open work silver border & a crown Derby Centre, very pretty we thought.

-By this evening's post came a letter from Harry Whittemore saying that Reggie had been taken to Grace Hospital with appendicitis, the doctors were not decided as to an operation, but he asked for Hilda to go down to be with Reggie sometimes, as there was no one to sit with him.
I do not know if I mentioned that Mrs. W. went to California a few weeks ago, some of the relatives I think had sent her the money for the trip. So it is very hard for the poor boys. I do trust he may not need the operation, poor fellow. Hilda of course starts off to-morrow1

NOTES accompanying the above: 1 Mrs. Francis B. (McCord) Whittemore and her children, Miss Penrose, (niece) Harry and Frank lived at 133 Bloor St. E., Toronto, in 1900 (Tyrell 120).
In 1908 Mrs. Whittemore and some of her family lived near Ruby McQuesten in Calgary & may have been there for the same rest cure which was later diagnosed as tuberculosis. "Reggie" may have been a middle name for Frank. On September 19, 1907,
Harry married Miss Florence Haworth, (Florrie or Flossie,) daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George F Haworth (nee Yates,) 199 Bloor St. E. (Tyrell 61.) Others mentioned in the letters are Henry and Holton.

The fate of the Whittemore's husband and father is unknown; however, he was possibly the Dr. J.H. Whittemore, Dr. Calvin Brooks McQuesten's classmate at medical school, Dartmouth College, New Hampshire.
Dr. Whittemore and a mutual friend, Dr. George O. Moody, wrote several letters to Dr. Calvin Brooks from Ireland, Germany, Austria, Italy, London and Boston, where they were studying medicine in 1871-72 and 1877. They described their travels and studies in the various medical centres in Europe and encouraged Dr. Calvin Brooks to join them, but he did not do so.

My dearest little Mother, I was so very sorry to think of your worrying so terribly of course we all did but I thought after Wards perhaps I should not have told you so much.
To-day Reggie is getting along splendidly & looked more like himself Harry says his eyes are brighter & he talked a little. Dr Temple says if he keeps on like this he will be out of the wood by Thursday. I hope you will understand the expression. We all feel so sorry for Mrs. Whittemore the journey home will be such an anxious one. - We have not told Reggie yet that she is coming & won't be able to for a few days till he is stronger. He will feel so badly about spoiling his Mothers trip. Already he is worrying about the cost of his operation but Harry bluffs him & I am afraid tells so many little files that Reggie's mind is at rest. Harry is the only one allowed to see him.
Yesterday it poured rain in the morning and as we were waiting for the doctors report we did not go to church. Mrs. Whittemore will walk here Wednesday morning at 8 o'clock. Harry is keeping her posted along the way.

. 1903 Apr 30 - Reggie Whittemore came yesterday & to my mind he looks very badly, but Hilda does not seem to think so, and I suppose she knows best. Mr. Murray has offered to take him for a drive when he is here, so that will be splendid, as Reggie seems to have no strength.
7 May, 1903 - Reggie Whittemore went off to his Uncle's at Waterdown on Tuesday but we expect him back he has grown so tall and is so thin and stooped it is melancholy to see him.
