1710 A Grant on Wando River near John Dunham was issued.

    NOTE 2./ LAND OWNERSHIP <>

In Colonial South Carolina, land was granted under various laws and statutes as decreed by the King of England and/or the Lords Proprietors. Any free person could appear before the Council and petition for a survey to be granted land. The amount of land awarded depended upon a head of family status which at one time was valued at 100 acres for the head of household and 50 acres for all others of the household including slaves. This amount changed periodically depending upon the desire of the government to attract settlers to the colony. After the petition for a survey was submitted, the person appeared before the Council and petitioned for a grant to pass which authorized the surveyor to measure out the land.

The Lord's Proprietors were British nobles who were loyal to King Charles, II. of England and assisted him to return from exile and regain his throne. To reward them for their contributions, on March 24, 1663, the King gave them ownership of a large tract of land in the colonies. This was a very large segment of North America running from the Atlantic to the Pacific, lying between 36 degrees north latitude on the north and 31 degrees on the south. In 1665, the charter was amended to raise the north line 30 minutes and extend the south line by two degrees. Their claim, which was called Carolina, then included the part of North America that now includes the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, a small part of Missouri, most of Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona, the southern half of California, the southern tip of Nevada, the northern part of Florida, and a part of northern Mexico.

This huge section of continent was granted entirely to eight men, to be financed by them for their profit, and to rule with the help or interference of any local government as they might permit. The Lords Proprietors were: the Duke of Albemarle, Lord Ashley, Lord Berkeley, Sir William Berkeley, Sir George Carteret, the Earl of Clarendon, Sir John Colleton, and Lord Craven. It was their names which were given to the early counties, districts, and which continue even now as names of counties and places. The most important of these was Lord Ashley (Anthony Ashley Cooper), who laid out the street plan for the new city of Charles Town, South Carolina. His secretary was the philosopher John Locke who wrote the Fundamental Constitution of Carolina.

In 1719, the Lords Proprietors gave up their claims to property in the Colony. This probably occurred because they failed to understand the value of their possessions which they found could not be managed well from so great a distance. Arrangements were finally made to return the Colony to the King of England in 1731. The land records were left in great confusion as a result of their withdrawal and lack of control of changes made during the interim. To determine ownership, an act was passed in 1731 called "The Memorials". This required land owners to file a brief statement of their ownership, known as a memorial.

The 22nd day of August in the year of our lord 1765 I, Benjamin Singletary of Bladen County, Planter, being very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given unto God for the same and calling to mind the mortality of my body, and knowing that it is appointed for all men to die, do make this my last Will and Testament, that is to say principally and first of all.

I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God, that gave it, and for my body I recommend it to the earth to be buried in a Christian-like and decent manner at the descretion of my Executors, nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty Power of God. And as touching such worldly Estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this life. I give devise and dispose of the same in manner and form following that is to say in the first place.

I give and bequeath to Elizabeth my dearly beloved wife, while she lives the house and household goods and Plantation where I now live together with one Negro Wench named Flower. All my stock of horses, Cattle and hogs, to dispose of as she thinks proper, for the bringing up and schooling of the youngest children, and after her death the Plantation to be equally divided between my two youngest sons, Joseph and John. It is also, I give to my eldest son, Richard 320 acres of land joining the upper side of the Plantation I now live on and one Negro fellow named Cubben, to him, his heirs and assigns.

Also, I give to my son Benjamin 300 acres of land lying on the South West of the river opposite to the land I gave to my Son Richard and one Negro Wench named Clarender to him and his heirs its also. Revolutionary Soldier Joseph E. Singletary, Pension # S47849.

In the fall of 1777, Joseph and his brother, Josiah, were recruited as substitutes into the Bladen County Militia commanded by Col. Thomas Brown (later General). Joseph was a substitute for William Harrison while Josiah substituted for their uncle, Benjamin FitzRandolph of which both had been drafted for an expedition against a force of Tories which had taken positions along the South Carolina state line in then Bladen CO., NC. After a months service they were disbanded and returned home.

In 1778, Capt. Jared Irwin raised a troop of light horse (cavalry) in Bladen Co., NC in which Joseph and Josiah became volunteers. In the same year, Col. Thomas Robeson also raised a troop of light horse in the County. The two companies of cavalry sometimes took the field together with Col. Robeson in command but generally they acted as separate units alternating time in the field. Both of these companies were involved in numerous skirmishes.

On June 6, 1781 both companies of cavalry under the command of Col. Robeson, became engaged with a large Tory force led by Col. Hector NcNeil at Stewart's Mill on Rockfish Creek. In the ensuing battle Joseph was "severly wounded by a broadsword in several places and disabled in one leg in consequence of having been trod upon by horse". It further states in his pension application "Said Singletary lay three or four months, severly wounded, at the house of the mother of this deponent". The deponent was either Susannah Harrison or Susannah McRee.

Joseph can be identified in the 1800 and 1810 Census in Bladen Co., NC. He is found in Leon Co., Flordia in 1830. The 7th of May, 1836 he sold his land in Leon Co., FL. On May 21, 1836,13 days after Joseph sold his Florida property, his son, Josiah Singletary, bought land in Thomas Co., Georgia.
There is no record of Joseph owning any land in Georgia. He lived with his daughter, Nancy, and son, Josiah, although Joseph is listed as head of household in the 1840 Census.

In June of 1837, Joseph's agent in Tallahassee, FL. informed the Commissioner of Pensions in Washington,D.C. of the change of address to Thomas Co. GA.
Joseph was a charter member and Deacon of the Popular Springs Primitive Baptist Church formed August 14, 1837 and whose Minister was his old friend the Elder William Hawthorn. Joseph and Elder Hawthorn were both past Ministers of the Big Swamp Primitive Baptist Church in Bladen Co., NC.
The church minutes give the date of his death as April 14, 1844. In the July 1844 term of the Inferior Court of Thomas County, Letters of Administation were granted to Josiah Singletary, his son, to administer the estate of Joseph. After an inventory and appraisal, the following items were sold:

    Notes:

NOTE 1./ Col. Thomas Robeson held the rank of Colonel in the War of the Revolution. An account of his war record can be found in the record of the "Battle of Elizabethtown, North Carolina", just after the record of Captain Peter Robeson (brother of Thomas). Robeson County North Carolina was named after Col. Thomas Robeson and his brother, Captain Peter Robeson, in recognition of their services during the Revolution

NOTE 2./ Robeson County, in the southeastern section of North Carolina, was established on Jan. 6, 1787, carved from Bladen, but settlers lived here before that. The earliest verifiable records show settlers as early as 1747, when Henry O'Berry applied for two tracts west of Raft Swamp, when the area was part of Bladen County.

The county bears the name of Col. Thomas Robeson, a hero from the Battle of Elizabethtown, fought in September 1781 during the Revolutionary War. According to Judge Henry McKinnon, a charter member of the Robeson County Historical Society: "Col. Robeson is said to have demanded that the new county be named for him as a condition for supporting its creation. But Robeson died in 1785, so he could not have had a final say. Robeson never lived in the area that bears his name."

Robeson County is bounded by the state of South Carolina and Scotland, Hoke, Cumberland, Bladen and Columbus counties

Early settlements in this parish have been discussed, involving especially the areas around Goose Creek and Wassamassaw. The upper section of this parish was one of the less thickly populated parts of the State until after the Revolution, at which time names began showing up that were formerly found only in the lower parishes or areas where special groups had settled as in the case of John Jenks Singletary, Warnock, Luten and others that had appeared earlier in St. Thomas and St. Denis and Christ Church Parishes and names associated with Dorchester or the Peedee.

NOTE 2./ Historical Note: The Year Was 1789

The year was 1789 and in the U.S. a young government was beginning to take shape. In its first nationwide election, the popular Revolutionary War general, George Washington, became the country's first president and was sworn in at the first capitol of the United States, Federal Hall in New York City.

In France, a rebellion was underway and with the storming of the Bastille prison, the French Revolution began. In its reporting on the subject, The Times of London, England had the following to say of the conflict:

The spirit of liberty which so long lay in a state of death, oppressed by the hand of power, received its first spark of returning animation, by the incautious and impolitic assistance afforded to America. The French soldier on his return from that emancipated continent, told a glorious tale to his countrymen--"That the arms of France had given freedome to thirteen United States, and planted the standard of liberty on the battlements of New York and Philadelphia." The idea of such a noble deed became a general object of admiration, the [facets?] of a similar state were eagerly longed for by all ranks of people, and the vox populi had this force of argument--"If France gave freedom to America, why should she not unchain the arbitrary fetters which bind her own people.

Later that year, the Marquis de Lafayette, with the advice of Thomas Jefferson who was at the time the American ambassador to France, drafted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. It was adopted by France's National Assembly in August and ratified by Louis XVI in October.

There was unrest in other parts of the world as well. Sweden and Russia were at war, and briefly, Norway had joined the conflict, although a peace treaty was signed in July 1789.

In a smaller, but well-known conflict, the mutiny on the H.M.S. Bounty was also in the year 1789. On April 28, part of the crew of the Bounty, led by Fletcher Christian, mutinied and set Captain William Bligh and eighteen crewmembers adrift. Bligh managed to get the boat some 3,600 miles to Timor. Some of the mutineers were captured and prosecuted--three were hanged, while others, including Fletcher Christian ended up on Pitcairn Island, where some of their descendants live to this day.

In 1789, there was an epidemic of influenza in New England, New York, and Nova Scotia, which resulted in many deaths due to secondary cases of pneumonia. The new president was among those who fell ill. He caught a cold while visiting Boston, and later, was affected more seriously with influenza, which was dubbed Washington Influenza.
