LAYBOURNE, Robert, was b. Durham Co., Eng., 1832, & came to Canada with his parents when 3 years old. They set. near Cobourg & he was brought up there. He m. Ann J. Martin of Hope Tp., & the following year they came to Alma. When the land sale in Minto occurred in 1854, he secured 100 acres, lot 19, con. 3, but aside from doing settlement duty did not settle permanently on this land until 1863. This farm he cleared & still owns. Mr. Laybourne has practically retired from active business, & the homestead is carried on by his son, Samuel L. Laybourne, with whom this respected pioneer lives. In 1901 they had their golden wedding anniversary, & in 1904 his wife passed away.

Samuel L. is the only one living in Minto. In 1881 he went into the railway business at St. Paul, on the Great Northern Ry., & rose from brakeman to passenger conductor, resigning in 1897, when he returned to Minto & purchased 100 acres, lot 20, con. 2, also buying his father's stock & implements, & paying cash for all. He now carries on the home farm as well as his own. He m. Jane Morrison. Issue: Marguerite I., Clarence B. & Kenneth M. - - -
