Mary Ann Lowrance was born 1802 in Hope, Warren County, NJ, the 4th of 11 known surviving children (6 boys/5 girls) born to Daniel Lowrance/Lawrence (1773-1837) and his wife, Sibelar Doty (1779-1845). The family surname originated in this country as Lorentz, but by her father's generation many in the family had anglicized the name to LAWRENCE, and she is found in public records as both LOWRANCE and LAWRENCE.
She was the paternal grandchild of Sylvanus/Silvanus Lawrence (ca. 1736-1831) and Jemima Dickerson (1747-1832) of Flanders, Morris Co, NJ; and gr-grandchild of Daniel Lorentz/Lawrence (ca. 1713-1796) and Elizabeth Drake (1716-1754) of Peapack, Somerset Co, NJ. She is a direct descendant of this family's patriarch, Johannes Lorentz (1866-1745) of LaRochelle, France who lived in the Alsace Lorrane District of France/Germany and immigrated to this country with his wife, Anna Margaretha Heiliger,as part of the great Palantine migration from Europe. Three of Johannes Lorentz's sons removed to North Carolina where they were patriarch's of the Lawrence family that settled in Rowan County. On her mother's side, Mary Ann, was the maternal grandchild of Henry Clark Doty (ca. 1754-1798) and Mary Lorain Loree of Medham, Morris Co, NJ.
Mary Ann was 21 years old when she married 20-year old Israel Swayze (b. 2/21/1803), son of Caleb Swayze & Elsie Kinney; a descendant of the Judge Samuel Swayze of Southold, Suffolk Co, Long Island who removed to Roxbury, Morris County in 1727. This line of Swayze's are descendants of John Swezey (1610-1706) of Dorsetshire, England who removed to Long Island about 1658, having originally settled in Salem, MA.
Mary Ann & Israel lived in Hope, Warren County, where they would become parents to 8 known surviving children:

* Caleb Swayze (1825-1825)
* Lydia "Lily" Swayze (1828-1871)

Her husband, Israel Swayze, was a well-to-do farmer, and prominent in the social, political and religious life surround the community of Hope. He served as Justice of the Peace (1837-1838).
Mary Ann Lowrance Swayze died in 1874 at age 72. Her husband of 51 years survived her 14 years, passing in 1888 at age 85.
