"The other war-time squatter was James McNames, who was born in New York State in 1792. In 1804 he and his family immigrated to Upper Canada and lived on a reserved lot in Oxford Township. McNames bought Orrison Gillet's improvements on the southern part of lot 37, first concession, in October 1814 for $150, and shortly afterwards Gillet returned to the United States. In the spring of 1815 McNames moved his family onto the lot and over the next year cleared five acres of land in addition to the seven already improved. Then, on January 29, 1816, Sykes Tousley was allowed a large location in Westminster including the old location of Orrison Gillet, now, of course, occupied by McNames. As far as the government was concerned the lot was still located in Gillet's name and since he had returned to the United States, it was considered forfeited and located to Tousley. In March McNames brought the matter to the government's attention and it was later decided that McNames should be recommended for a grant of the north half of the lot, leaving the south half to Tousley. McNames accepted the government's decision and on March 5, 1817 he paid the necessary fees. Two years later, on December 18, 1819, he received his patent for the land, which he eventually sold on January 17, 1840 to Thomas Summers. It is stated that the family came the time that James Nixon's family came; but this is wrong, as the Nixons settled in New York in 1816, and came to Westminster in February, 1819
[London Township Families Past & Present, p485] "Robert Summers (1756-1833) was a farmer and weaver in Bewcastle, Cumberland, England. His wife was Margaret Bell (1767-1858). They immigrated to Upper Canada in 1819 with their three sons and four daughters and settled in Middlesex County. They spent the first winter on Con. 2, then moved to Brick St., Westminster Twp. in 1820 where the parents lived out their lives. Some of their children married people from London Township. The children were Margaret (Mrs. James Nixon), Jane (Mrs. George Routledge), Mary (Mrs. Eli Trowbridge), John, Elizabeth (Mrs. George Robson), Robert Jr. (Isabella Robson), and Thomas.

[HCM, p. 1013]: Robert Summers was a farmer and weaver by trade, and when sixty-four or sixty-five years old came to Canada, in June, 1819, and nine weeks fromt the day he started landed in Quebec. He came soon after to Middlesex County, and the first winter lived on the 2nd Concession. Early in February, 1820, he bought a place on Brick street, in Westminster Township, and moved there on the 1st of May. Here he lived until his death in August, 1833, at the age of seventy-seven years. His wife died in 1858, at the age of ninety-one. their family consisted of three sons and four daughters, whose names are as follows: -- Margaret (the wife of James Nixon), Jane (wife of George Routledge, died in 1847), Mary (wife of Eli Trowbridge, who is also dead), John (died 11th of April, 1889), Elizabeth (wife of George Robson), Robert and Thomas. Four of the children are now living. Margaret, the eldest daughter, is ninety-four years of age; Mary is eighty-five; Robert is seventy-nine; and Thomas is 72.

[HCM, p. 1029]: Robert Summers came with his family from Cumberland County, England, in 1819, and to his marriage were born six children -- Jane, Mary, Joh, Elizabeth, Robert and Thomas. Mr. Summers settled on Lot 36, 1st Concession, \nx li sx fhsds fhs dsm\inxsd oc hiz x\yz. s xisx in fhs ys\d 1833 at the age of 77. He was the owner of about 500 acres of land, and was a well-to-do farmer.

Robert married Margaret Bell*. Margaret was born in 1772 in Cumberland, England; died on 17 Nov 1862. [Group Sheet]

[Guy St-Denis - Byron: Pioneer Days in Westminster Township] [James Shelden had acquired L35] On July 10, 1824 he sold an unspecified number of acres, being the north-west corner of the lot, to Thomas Jarvis.

He apparently went back to Pennsylvania to marry Harriet, although she was from Oxford Cy. So he came to Westminster from Pennsylvania, bought the land in July 1824, returned to Pennsylvania October 1824 and married Harriet. First child Belinda was born July 1825

Thomas married Harriet Brink* on 10 Oct 1824 in Wysox, Bradford Co., Pennsylvania. Harriet (daughter of Nicholas Brink and Elizabeth Moger) was born on 01 Jun 1805; died on 31 Jul 1857. [Group Sheet]
