WATFORD GUIDE ADVOCATE DECEMBER 1915
LIEUT.-COL. KELLY DIES AT WATFORD

Scarcely  a week after his appointment as commanding officer of  the 149th  Battalion, C.E.F., Lieut. Col. R.G.C. Kelly dropped  dead  last night of heart failure. As  a physician he was one of the most widely known men  in  Lambton County,  and he proved his worth as a military man by the  reorganization  of the 27th Lambton Militia Regiment some years ago. He was  one of Watford's big men, and flage all over the town are at half mast out of respect to the doctor's memory. Col., Kelly was found dead beside his automobile in the garage about 1:30  o'clock  this  morning. It is believed he had been  dead  for  a couple  of  hours when found. The engine of the car was  running,  but Col. Kelly had not reached the side of the machine when death overtook him. In  a  chat  with  Mrs.  Kelly early in  the  day,  Col.  Kelly  had complained  of slight dizziness, but otherwise had apparently  enjoyed good health. He would have been 46 years old on Christmas day, but his  strenuous career  as  a medical practitioner during the last score of  years  is believed to have been too great a strain for even his staunch  constitution. At 11:30 last night, Col. Kelly was called from a conversation  with his  wife by a message from the country. Thought he had abandoned  his practice  a week ago, the doctor agreed to undertake the  journey  and left  the house. When the farmer called up an hour later,  Mrs.  Kelly told  him  the doctor was on his way. In still another  hour  the  man appeared at the Kelly residence and hearing the engine running in  the garage,  investigated,  to find Dr. Kelly stretched out  dead  on  the floor. Major MacVicar, second in command of the 149th Battalion, and  Capt. Merrison, adjutant of the 149th both of Sarnia, came to Watford  today    to look after the work of the Battalion which had been assumed by Col. Kelly. The question of a successor to the position of commanding officer is undecided.  Major  MacVicar, who is senior major of the  27th  militia regiment;  Captain Merrison, who offered to raise a mounted  corps  in Lambton and others are among those mentioned. Arrangements  are being made to provide a military funeral for  Col. Kelly.  It  is probable that it will take place on  Thursday,  thought interment  may  be deferred on account of the fact that  two  brothers live in the west. Col.  Kelly came of a military family and was proud of  the  connection.  His grandfather, Major Campbell, was a famous soldier, and  two uncles also spent some time in the army. Mrs. Kelly and four children, the youngest of which is three  months old survive. Col. Kelly, was a Conservative and a member of the Anglican Church.

Her death was not reported to the Guide-Advocate due to no publication the week between Christman and New Years. WATFORD GUIDE ADVOCATE 1 DECEMBER 1905
JOHN KIDD

It is our sad duty to chronicle the death of an old and much respected citizen, in the person of Mr. John Kidd of Brooke, which sad event occurred about 3 a.m. on Tuesday 28 Nov. The deceased, who enjoyed his usual good health up to last  Friday night, sat up for a few minutes reading after the rest of the family had retired, and had scarcely done so when the attention of his faithful wife was attracted by a peculiar rattling in his throat as if he was choking, but she was unable to arouse him. Dr. Gibson was hastily called and pronounced him suffering from a paralytic stroke, and  held out no hope of his recovery. The  late Mr. Kidd was born in the township of Beckwith, County of Lanark, in April 1834, and was consequently in his 72nd year. He came to Brooke in the year 1866 and purchased Lot 9, in the 12 Con in 1868. In  1872 he married Hannah Lucas, daughter of the late John  Lucas, one of the first settlers of the township and settled on his farm where he has since resided. His well directed efforts and industry met the reward that comes to such and he established a good home and a prosperous farm. The  deceased is survived by his widow and a family of 8 children. Mrs. Styles of Brooke, George of Manitoba, Thomas of the G.T.R.  Sarnia,  John, Edward and Frederick, and Missess Ellen and Anna at  home. One  brother  Thomas of Smith Falls, sister Mrs.  David  Gilliland  of Brooke and 3 other sisters in the Ottawa valley, also survive. In  those  early times the young men of Ontario did not  make  their start in life under such favorable auspices as now, and the subject of our  sketch had little of the world's goods to assist him on the  way. He had, however, what is far more valuable, namely, a rugged constitution  and a stout physique, together with the good example  of  worthy parents, who did not fail to impress in him the principles of integrity, intelligence and industry. For  many years he was engaged in the lumber woods, mostly with  the late Mr. McLaren, of Rivers and Streams Bill fame, who always regarded him as a trusted and faithful employee. Mr. Kidd always weighed carefully any subject requiring his consideration, and after having arrived at his conclusions he was not easily dissuaded therefrom. He  was  loyal to his friends and faithful to any trust reposed in him. For many years he was Sec-Treasurer of the school board, and so dilligently did he perform his duties that his fellow trustees were content to leave matters wholly in his hands. About 3 years ago he retired, owing to advancing years and it is a matter of note that things have not gone so smoothly in the section since. In religion the deceased was an adherent of the English Church, and in politics a Conservative, though never a blind partizan. The  funeral  will take place on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. to St. James Cemetery.
