all the young people's activities in the district, and in
her own school section and Bethesda Church particularly, she will be
sorely missed. The removal of such a devoted young wife and mother will be
very keenly felt by her husband, her 3 year old daughter Helen
Margaret, her parents and her only brother, Orville. The funeral which was
held from her late residence on Monday after noon, was attended by the largest number of

PETROLIA NEWSPAPER 27 APRIL 1939
JOHN ALEXANDER COWAN
The death occurred at his home on North St., about eight o'clock
this morning of John Alexander Cowan, a well-known life-long resident of this
district, following a brief illness from influenza. Mr. Cowan had not been in robust
health for the past few years but had been able to take care of his service station
business up to a week ago when he was taken down with the flu. His demise was not
expected and came as a shock to his relatives and friends. The late Mr. Cowan was
born of a pioneer family in Brooke Township when timbering was the principal
industry of the district. As a young man he helped clear his father's farm and
then secured a position in the stave mill then operating at Weidman
where he learned to be an expert operative of the stave cutting machines which
manufactured the materials for the barrell industry of the time. During this
period of pioneer settlement Mr. Cowan lived through many stiring
times and could vividly recall numerous fights to clear the settlement of outlaws
and a settlement of negroes who had located near Weidman. Mr. Cowan came to Petrolia
about 1895 to take a position in the then thriving ash business of Newell Healey in
which the wood asher were collected under a barter system and
manufactured into soap and other products. Mr. Healey was succeeded by John Joynt
who later sold out to Mr. Cowan, he having conducted this business up to about twelve
years ago. For the past three years Mr. Cowan had worked at the service
station in the Normandy block which he was conducting in partnership with his son,
Alex Cowan, at the time of his death. Mr. Cowan was twice married, his first wife having
been Miss Louise Smith, who predeceased him by more than forty
years. In 1900 he was married to Miss Katharine Osborne, who survives. The
deceased is also survived by five daughters and two sons; Mrs. William Bailey
of Enniskillen; Mrs. Hert. Smith of London; Alex Cowan of Petrolia; Miss
Agnes Cowan at home; Harry Cowan of Brownsville; Mrs. Beet Goudie
(Edith) of Wyoming and Miss Gertrude at home. One brother Samuel Cowan of the
6th line Enniskillen also survives. The deceased was a member of the Petrolia
Baptist Church and had been for some years a member of the Petrolia Fire
Department. The funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon with service at his
late risidence at 2.00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J.W. Hisey of the
Petrolia Baptist Church. Interment will be in Hillsdale Cemetery.

occurrence caused a sensation in the chruch and the service was abandoned, and the body
removed to the home of the deceased. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon to the
