This photograph of the tombstone commemorating John Campbell and his mother, Sarah Ann (Havens) Campbell, was taken in 2010 at the Pioneers’ Memorial Cemetery at Cold Springs, north of Cobourg, Ontario. My original photo dating from approximately four years prior to this date showed the tombstone partially buried in the ground in a state that hid John’s date of death and his age at the time of death.  The bottom of the tombstone which appears pristine in this photo was actually preserved underground due to less weathering from the elements. Just prior to 2010, several tombstones in the cemetery were repaired and reset on new foundations.

John Campbell was the third son born to William Campbell and Sarah Ann (Havens) Campbell while they lived at Cold Springs, Hamilton Township, Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada. John Campbell lived only about two months until his death at about two months of age on 17 March 1853. No evidence has surfaced to date as to what caused the death of John Campbell. John is commemorated on the same tombstone in the Cold Springs Pioneers’ Memorial Cemetery as his Mother, Sarah Ann (Havens) Campbell, who died the following year in 1854. This researcher has found no evidence that the death of Sarah Ann (Havens) Campbell was related to the birth of her third son, John Campbell.

The manse and/or the actual Congregational church itself burned twice in the latter half of the 1800s destroying all church records. This would include the baptismal records for William Hayden Campbell, Sylvester Campbell, John Campbell and any records related to the death of Sarah Ann (Havens) Campbell and John Campbell. This destruction of church records also limits the exploration of William Campbell’s second marriage to Isabella Jane Sidey, a year or two following the death of Sarah Ann.

No actual written record has ever been seen by this researcher which documents in any way the short life of John Campbell. His presence was only ever shared by word-of-mouth over two or three generations, until this researcher went looking for any evidence that might exist in the Pioneers’ Memorial Cemetery at Cold Springs.
