Margaret Naomi Campbell was born on 8 January 1873 to William Campbell and Isabella Jane Sidey while the family was still resident in Percy Township, Northumberland County, Ontario. Margaret’s birth registration (#033563) lists her father, William Campbell, as a “yeoman”, inferring that he owned land. Land records support this assumption noting that he sold his farm to his two sons, William and Sylvester, prior to moving his family north to take up residence in Chandos Township, Peterborough County, Ontario. The 1881 Census of Canada shows Margaret Naomi Campbell, now aged 8, living with her family in the Township of Burleigh, Anstruther and Chandos in Peterborough County. In addition to her parents, William Campbell and Isabella Jane Sidey, Margaret’s siblings noted in the census record include Sylvester (32), David (22), George (19), Mary Ann (17), Alexander (14), Isabella (10), Jane (6) and Agnes (4). Margaret’s oldest half-brother, William Hayden Campbell, has already married and is living with his own family in the Ottawa area. The 1891 Census of Canada finds Margaret Naomi Campbell (18) living with the family of Ira and Abigail Rosebush, residents of Burleigh, Anstruther and Chandos in Peterborough County. Margaret’s relationship to the head of the household is identified as a lodger, perhaps suggesting that she was working as a domestic for the Rosebush family. The 1901 Census of Canada shows Margaret Naomi (27) living back home with her mother, Isabella Jane Sidey (65) and Margaret’s older sister, Isabella Jane Campbell (30). Margaret’s father, William Campbell, has died four years earlier in 1897 and one could assume that Margaret and Isabella are taking care of their mother and helping to maintain the family farm. Margaret’s older sister, Isabella Jane Campbell, will marry George Bartlett Gerrard on 8 June 1909 in Cobourg, Northumberland County, Ontario. Tragically, Isabella Jane (Campbell) Gerrard will die in 1912. Margaret Naomi’s mother, Isabella Jane Sidey, will die on 16 March 1916, as reported by Margaret’s brother, George Henry Campbell, by then married to Christina Taylor MacGregor, and living in Castleton, Ontario. By 1918 Margaret Naomi Campbell will have moved to British Columbia, Canada. On 30 March 1918 in Point Grey, British Columbia, Margaret Naomi Campbell will marry James Donaldson Slater. Margaret Naomi (Campbell) Slater will live out her life in British Columbia. Margaret dies on 26 March 1958 in Coquitlam, British Columbia. Margaret’s husband, James Donaldson Slater, has died the previous year in 1957. Margaret Naomi (Campbell) Slater is buried in the Mountain View Cemetery in the Greater Vancouver Regional District of British Columbia.

[As an interesting side note, Margaret Naomi sent magazines every Christmas from British Columbia to my mother, Lois Marion (Campbell) Wickson, throughout her childhood. Perhaps this indicates that Margaret Naomi never completely forgot her family roots in Chandos Township, Peterborough County, Ontario.]
