 WATFORD GUIDE ADVOCATE JANUARY 1908
  ELIZABETH (LEACH)  HIGGINS

Again it is our sad duty to record the death and life history of one of the oldest and most respected settlers of the township of  Warwick, who died at her home 6th line, Monday morning 13 January 1908. The  deceased was born 16 April 1842 in Beckwith Township, near  the village  of Franktown, her maiden name being Elizabeth Leitch. At  six months  of  age  her father died leaving her mother to  care  for  the infant  child  and older brother, William Leitch, of Warwick,  over  a year  later her mother, who was a sister of Old Aunt Ellen  Lucas  and Old Aunt Hanna Whitcraft, married again to John Reid, of Lot II Con 3, of Warwick, where they lived til 1856 moving from there to Lot 10 Con. 6 S.E.R., Warwick. On the 5th of March 1861, the deceased was married to David  Higgins at old St. James Church, Brooke, by the Rev. Joseph C. Gibson,  rector  of  Warwick,  taking up their home on Lot 9 Con 6 S.E.R.,  where  they have resided continuously ever since. About  a month ago the deceased was seized by an attack of  jaundice from which she was apparently recovering until within a couple of days of  her death whem a hemmorrage of the bowels set in and in  spite  of the  best medical skill and most careful attention and nursing in  the home the results proved fatal. Mrs. Higgins commonly called Aunt Elizabeth, was a staunch member of St.  James English Church, but in later years transferred to  Bethesda Methodist Church, it being more conveniently situated to her home  and family. For  several years she was a teacher in the Sabbath school  and  was always  a  communicant at the Lord's table. She was a  mother  of  the community  in which she lived and was never known on any occasion,  at any hour of the day or night to refuse all her possible assistance  at any  sick  bed  for miles around always forgetting  her  own  physical weakness to be of help to others. Her home was always open on all occasions whether for social society or church benefits and the hand of welcome was just as gladly given to those  who entered in fact kindness, self sacrifice and decotion  were most promient features in her character. An aged husband and family of 9 children are left to mourn the  loss of  a loving wife and mother. The family are: Mrs. George  Randall  of Port Huron; Mrs. Joseph Owens of London; Mrs. R.F. Acton of  Winnipeg, Man;  Mrs. H.D. Galbraith of Drumbo; Miss Henrietta ot  Toledo,  Ohio; Misses  Edith  and Maude of London; William Thomas and  Robert  Arthur whose  homes  join  the old home, also her  little  grandchild,  Pearl Moffatt, who for the past nine years has made her home with her grandma and has been her pet. In spite of the cold blustery day the funeral was largely  attended, the remains being laid away at St. James Cemetery, Brooke. The service being conducted at Bethesda Church by the Rev. T.B. Coupland, the pastor, assisted by Rev. S.W. Muxworthy, of Watford. The  text was the 23rd Psalm, it being a favorite psalm of  the  deceased and the one she made her dying comfort.  The floral offerince were beautiful, among them being a large  handsomely designed wreath given by L.O.L. 1029. The  family have the deep sympathy of a large circle of  friends  in their  bereavement.  The pallbearers were Albert Higgins, Thomas H. Higgins, Adam  Higgins, Walter Kelly, R. Leach, W.J. Henderson.

WATFORD GUIDE ADVOCATE 5 APRIL 1895
DEATH OF "AUNT" ELLEN LUCAS

On Monday 1st April, one of Brooke's pioneer settlers passed away in the person of Mrs. John Lucas, 14th Concession affectionately known to a host of relatives and connections as "Aunt Ellen." The  deceased,  who had reached the ripe old age of  93  years,  had enjoyed  excellent  health during her long and eventful  life  up  to within  a  few days of her last illness, and her end  was  a peaceful termination of a well-spent life. Mrs.  Lucas, whose maiden name was Miss Ellen Saunders, was  married in  1820 to her aged partner in life, who survives her, now  being  in his  96th  year,  and was the mother of 13 children,  11  being  still alive,  they are: Henry, Mrs. Boddy of Michigan, Andrew, Thomas,  Mrs. Black  of  Bay City Michigan, Mrs. Thomas Higgins,  John,  William  of Gladwin  Michigan,  James, Robert, and Mrs. John Kidd  of  Brooke,  81 grandchildren,  and  83 great grandchildren are among the  living  descendants. For  61 years Mr. and Mrs. Lucas have resided on the old  homestead, Lot 12 Con 14 Brooke, and during that lenghty period they  expereinced all  the  trials and privations endured by the hardy  and  industrious pioneers who hewed out homes for themselves and families, in what  was then the wilderness of the west. Had the old couple been spared to December of the present year  they would  have celebrated the 75th or diamond anniversary of  their  wedding, an event which was looked forward to with interest by the family and relatives. Her  death removes one of the few remaining landmarks of  the  early days,  and  in  a year or two there will be none left  to  relate  the history  of  the  early settlements of this  district.  Kind hearted, industrious and hospitable to a degree there will be many mourners  of the death of "Aunt" Ellen Lucas. The  funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon to the English  Cemetery, 6th line (St. James) and was conducted by the Rev. J. Downie. It was  one of the largest seen in the township for years, testifying  to the  esteem in which the deceased was held by a wide circle  of  relatives and friends.
(NOTE: John and Ellen were married 27 December 1822)

WATFORD GUIDE ADVOCATE 21 APRIL 1899
DEATH OF "UNCLE JOHNNY" LUCAS

Death  is rapidly thinning the ranks of the hardy band of  pioneers, who endured the privations and hardships incident to the early settlement  of Western Ontario, and laid the foundation for the prosperity and privileges their descendants now enjoy. The  present generation knows very little of the trials  experienced and  the difficulties overcome by the early settlers in their  efforts to make homes for themselves in the unbroken forests of the west,  and the  courage  and  energy displayed should cause their  memory  to  be revered  for all time. But few remain who could relate so vividly,  or had experienced more adventures than the subject of this sketch. Mr.  John Lucas, of Brooke, who passed peacefully to his  reward  on Thursday  April 13th at the good old age of 98. Born in the County  of Carlow,  Ireland in 1801 he came with his parents to Canada  in  1815, landing in Canada after a two months voyage in a sailing vessel. After a short residence in Montreal the family moved to  the  township  of Beckwith,  near Ottawa where they remained for some years.  Mr.  Lucas being employed on the construction of the Rideau Canal. On 22 December 1820  at the age of 19, he was united in marriage to Miss Ellen  Saunders,  his faithful partner in life who died on 1 April 1895, aged  93 the aged couple having the rare privilege of celebrating their diamond wedding. The deceased came to Brooke 64 years ago, locating on Lot 12, Con  14, where he continuously resided to the time of his death.  When he located in Brooke there were only four settlers in  the  township: Messrs. Watson, Larratt, Jno. Kelly and Jock Bryce, all now departed. Sarnia was the nearest market town and was reached through a  blazed trail through the bush. Westminster was the closest milling point. The journey was made with OX teams and required three days. London was  no larger than Warwick Village at that time and Mr. Lucas was offered the ground on which the London Court House now stands for 34 dollars. The  deceased comes from a long lived race, his father being 87  and his  mother was over 80 at their deaths. Until the last few months  he was  a remarkably active man, and his mind was as bright and his  body as sound as a man half his years. Eight  members of the family survive, the eldest son,  Henry  having died  a few years ago. The family in order of age are: Mrs.  Boddy  of Buell  Michigan, Andrew of Brooke, Thomas of Plympton, Mrs.  Black  of Bay City Michigan, James, Robert and Mrs. John Kidd of Brooke, John of Enniskillen,  William of Gladwin Michigan. The descendants include  81 grandchildren and 148 great-grandchildren. The  funeral on Sunday morning was the largest ever seen in  Brooke, over 200 rigs following the remains to their last resting place in the English Cemetery 6th line Brooke. (St. James).  Five  sons and Mr. John Kidd, son-in-law acted as  pallbearers.  The Rev. J. Downie B.D. preached the funeral sermon from Isa. XLIII, 10 "Ye are my witnessess saith the Lord Almighty."
(NOTE: His mother died at the age of 62 not 80 as stated)
(NOTE: John and Ellen were married 27 December 1822)
