WATFORD GUIDE ADVOCATE 19 JANUARY 1923
FRANCES (Lee)  HUME

Another  of the early pioneers of Enniskillen Township passed  away on Monday last in the person of Mrs. John Hume, who died at her  residence,  12th line, where she had lived continuously since  29  October 1859 when she was taken there as a bride by her husband. Mrs.  Hume's maiden name was Frances Lee. She was born  in  Picton, Ont.,  on  3  Aug 1841, and in 1855 came with her  parents  to  Brooke Township where she met her husband. After  their marriage Mr. Hume located on 200 acres of land,  which had been granted his father by the Crown. The county at that time  was solid bush and the few neighbors, Duncan McLachlan and Charles Leggett and Robert Dobbin, have since passed to their reward. There  were no roads in those days only blazed trails  through  the woods. The district abounded with wild animals, especially deer, which would  often  come right up to the log houses of the  early  settlers. Indians and squaws were frequent callers. Petrolia  then did not exist and trading was done in Wyoming  until the late Christopher Mackenzie opened a store in the East End. Like  most  early settlers, Mrs. Hume always enjoyed  good  health. Latterly, however, owing to advanced age her health failed her.  She  possessed  a  wonderful memory and was one  of  those  oldtime christians who worked in the interests of temperance and had a simple, trusting faith in her Saviour. She  leaves to mourn her loss her aged husband who is 85  years  of age;  one  son,  Sidney on the homestead; and  three  daughters,  Mrs. Thomas  Hartley  of Inwood; Mrs. John Woodley of Australia;  and  Mrs. William  Cook  of  Point Edward. Mr.  Hume  always  took an active interest in  public  affairs  and served his neighbours and friends as a trustee in S.S. No.6 for  about 9 years.
