SARNIA OBSERVER 20 OCTOBER 1934
RICHARD W. WILLIAMSON

Following a brief illness and an operation in St. Joseph's hospital, London,  the death occurred, last evening, of Richard  W.  Williamson, reeve  of  Watford, a leading Mason, a member of  the Lambton  County council and a prominent Conservative. The  funeral  will be conducted under the auspices of St.  Simon  of Cyrene  Perceptory, Knights Templar, on Monday at 2:30 p.m.  from  the Watford Anglican church. Born in Warwick Township, 51 years ago, Mr. Williamson was raised on the  family farm and when a young man, moved to Watford, where he  was associated  with the Dominion Sugar Company as field supervisor for  a number of years, later becoming a commercial traveller. A  member of the village council for several years, he  advanced  to the office of reeve in 1931 and in recent years was often mentioned as a suitable Conservative candidate for the wardenship of the county. He was  the  county's representative on the senate of the  University  of Western Ontario and took an active interest in the county's educational program. He was president of the East Lambton  Liberal-Conservative Association and was several times a nominee for federal and provincial elections.  He was actively interested in welfare work and was  president  of the Watford Horticultural society, honorary president of  the literary society of Watford High school and honorary president of  the Watford branch of the Canadian Legion. Mr. Williamson was deputy grand master of the Sovereign Grand Priory  of  Canada,  Knights Templar. He was past master  of  Havelock  lodge, Watford,  and  a past principal of Bruce chapter, Royal  Arch  Masons, Petrolia;  also  past preceptor of St. Simon of Cyrene  preceptory  of Knights  Templar, Sarnia. He was a member of the Ancient Arabic  Order of Nobles  of the Mystic Shrine and the Royal and Select  Masters  of Sarnia. He  was former district deputy grand master of the A.F. and A.M.  in St.  Clair  district,  and was elected to his present  office  in  the preceptory  at Barrie last year. He would have reached the  office  of grand master next year. The  deceased  was a member of Trinity Anglican church  and  was  an ardent worker and singer of the choir. Surviving members of the family are  his  wife,  formerly Marjorie Lucas, one daughter  Verlie,  four sisters. Mrs. N. Healey of the 12th line of Brooke, Mrs. E. Parker, of London,  Mrs. J. WATFORD GUIDE ADVOCATE OCTOBER 1934
RICHARD WILLIAMSON

Funeral in Trinity Church Monday One of the Largest Ever Held in Watford; Hundreds of Sympathizing Friends From all Sections Unable to Enter the Church. For  the first time in 60 years since the village  was  incorporated back  in 1874, the Reeve of Watford has died in office,  when  Richard Williamson,  reeve for the past 4 years, died in London hospital  last Friday evening, following an operation the Monday previous. The  citizens  of  the town and entire countryside were stunned by  the  tragic news.  Daily  reports from the hospital had served  to  indicate  that although his condition was serious, an improvement was shown. From all sections of the country, friends of a lifetime voiced their deep sorrow and regret at his early passing in his 53rd year,  coupled with profound sympathy for his widow and only daughter. Born  in  Warwick  township, a farmer in Brooke  township  until  he retired  to  Watford and built a home about twelve  years  ago,  known throughout East Lambton farmers by his work as fieldman for the Dominion Sugar Co., for over 20 years; long identified with the East  Lambton Conservative association, serving as president at the time of  his death,  and it was generally rumored about this section of the  county that  he would be a candidate for the Conservative nomination  in  the new  Lambton-Kent  riding in the coming Federal election;  an  eminent Mason, actually the main pillar in Havelock Lodge, A.F.&A.M., where he has been an honoured member for nearly 20 years, rising to the rank of D.D.G.M.  some 10 years ago; a past first principal of Bruce  Chapter, Royal  Arch Mason, Petrolia, a past preceptor of St. Simon  of  Cyrene Preceptory of Knights Templar, Sarnia, and a member of  Mocha  Temple Shrine,  of  London. In the Knights Templar fraternity he  had  indeed gone  far. As a member of the Sarnia Drill Corps, which on many  occasions  has been designated as the finest in all Canada, as an  exalted officer of the Great Priory of Canada he steadily rose to the  office of deputy grand master for the past 2 years, and next year would  have taken the chair as Grand Master of all the preceptories across Canada. In  all  the various Masonic organizations "Dick"  Williamson  was  an outstanding member; never content to take the various degrees of  the Order  without throwing his whole-hearted interest and sympathy  into the  work of the organization. His record of achievements  in  Masonry has perhaps  seldom  been equalled, at the same  time  retaining  the admiration and profound respect of all his fellow members. He was ever ready to serve, whether the opportunity was instruction or guidance to a  younger Mason, with an ability to exemplify any degree work at  any time, whether blue lodge, chapter or preceptory to install officers or bury a departed brother; "Dick's" place will never be refilled in  the Masonic fraternities of this district. In  his  service to Watford, he accepted the Reeveship 4  years  ago this  fall  on the retirement of ex-warden W.G.  Connolly;  has  given excellent service to the village, both at home and at County  Council, was returned to office each year by acclamation, and worked in harmony with his council and all civic bodies for the town's welfare. The  various  activities  with which he was  connected  were  almost multitudinous, including the Canadian Legion, the Band, the  Horticultural  Society, skating arena, hockey club, all sports organizations, literary clubs, and all phases of community life that had aims for the betterment  of the young people of the community; an ardent  churchman first at Sutorville and later in Trinity Anglican Church a  consistent member of the choir, and counted upon as one of the best known laymen in the Lambton Deanery. To  his widow, Mrs. Marjorie Williamson and his daughter, Miss  Verlie,  the sympathy is extended, not only of all Watford citizens,  but of  hundreds of friends from far and near; and through them to  his  4 sisters,  Mrs.  Ellen Healey, 12th line Brooke; Mrs.  Francis  Parker, London; Mrs. Joseph Acton, Watford; Mrs. Ed McGregor, Petrolia; and  4 brothers; Ben, 12th line Brooke; James and Clifford of Trail B.C.; and William of Denver Col. The  funeral  on  Monday was impressive and  most  largely  attended literally  less  than one-third of those present enabled to  gain  entrance to Trinity Church, where the rector, Rev. J.H. Hosford, officiated. The  north side of the church was reserved for the pallbearers,  the Drill  Corps and escort of Knights Templar from Sarnia, who took  full charge  of the service: the Town Council, Public Utilities  Commission and  representatives of all the several organizations  throughout  the county with which he was affilliated. The  south  side was reserved for his family and  intimate  friends, relatives and family connections. The public were admitted to stand at the rear of the church and in the chancel, while hundreds waited without,  in silent tribute and respect. At the close of the church  service,  the members of all Masonic organizations not represented by  the Knights Templar, filed past the brier as a token of a last farewell. Interment  was  in  St. James church  cemetery,  Brooke,  where  the Knights  Templar  burial service, not infrequently  conducted  by  the deceased, was very impressively given by his brother Knights. The  profusion of floral tributes from all parts of the country  was almost unparalleled, and from the simplest sheaf to the most elaborate design, each bore messages of sincere grief and sympathy. The  honorary  pallbearers  included A.E. Brown,  Dr.  G.N.  Howden, Howard Fraleigh, ex M.L.A., of Forest, and the remaining three Protestant clergy of Watford, Rev. E. W. Hart, Rev. E.J. Kerr and Rev.  G.M. Chidley. The active pallbearers were members of St. Simon of Cyrene Preceptory  of  Sarnia; Alex Saunders, W.A. Saurwein, Dr.  A.R.  McMillan,  ex M.L.A., W.J. Carson, W.E. McKelvey and R.E. Garrett.
