WATFORD GUIDE ADVOCATE 3 AUGUST 1917
ELIZA (Acton)  LUCAS

Another of the pioneer settlers of Brooke Township joined the great majority on Tuesday, 24 July, in the person of Mrs. Andrew Lucas,  who passed  away at her home, Lot 12 Con 12, at the ripe age of nearly  87 years. The  deceased was the daughter of William and Mary Acton,  and  was born in Ireland in 1831. When 13 years old, she came with her  parents to  this country, the trip across the Atlantic taking six  weeks.  The family  settled  in Toronto. Four years later, in 1848, they  came  to Brooke where the deceased resided until the time of her death. On the 26th of January 1853, she was married to Mr. Andrew Lucas by Canon Mockridge, then rector of Warwick, and four years ago, celebrated her diamond wedding anniversary surrounded by her numerous descendants. Mrs. Lucas's long life was full of good deeds, and much of her time was spent in the service of others. Kindly natured and of a bright and lively  disposition, she made true friends of all with whom  she  made aquaintance. Her large heartedness was always in evidence and sickness and sorrow among her neighbours found practical help and ready  sympathy  at her hands. Dearly loved as she was at home and among  her  own people,  being  a  loving wife and a devoted mother, she  will  be  as deeply  missed among her friends, and the loss of her cheery  optimism will  be keenly felt. In her younger days, she was a prominent  member of  the  choir of her church and even up to a week of her  death,  she continued to sing hymns in a clear sweet voice, puting her whole  soul into  the effort. Her health commenced to fail 18 months ago, but  she was only confined to her bed for a few days. Besides  her husband, she is survived by three daughters  and  four sons,  44 grandghildren and 15 great grandchildren. Her  children  are Mrs.  D. McLean, Mrs. D. Whitehead, Mrs. W.J. Higgins, Wellington  and Richard  of Brooke, Wesley of Arkona and Sanford of  Alvinston.  Three brothers  also survive, namely: Richard, William and James acton,  all of Brooke. The  funeral was held Thursday, July 26 to St. James  Church  cemetery,  services being held in the Church by the Rector the  Rev.  S.P. Irwin  B.A. who spoke very feelingly, taking for his text, 1st  Corinthians 15:49. A large number of people were present to pay their  last respects  to the deceased. The pallbearers were her four sons and  two sons-in-law.

He  was  an ardent lover of country life and advocated  and  supported whatever he  considered to be in the interests of  the  township  and country.  He  was a member of the Church of England  and  a  life-long Conservative and was a loyal subject of five sovereigns. Daniel  Michael  Brooks, of 4356 Third was pronounced  dead  at  the scene by Douglas MacKinlay, Lambton County Coroner. No inquest or post mortem will be held the doctor said. The  child had been taken to the beach on Lake Huron by  his  mother with the rest of the family and three other children while the  father Les Brooks was at work. At about 11 p.m. Daniel was reported missing, a search organized and Forest Provincial Police called in. Ted  Crombeen RR1 Camlachie found the child at 11.25 p.m. face  down in  a stagnant creek behind the beach area. He applied mouth to  mouth resusitation but failed to revive the child. Mr.  Crombeen said today that he started searching the lakefront  at 11  p.m. and after failing to find anyone there, he had a pretty  good idea where to look. He said the creek was an obvious spot. Mr.  Crombeen said the creek was a still body of water that  doesn't flow into the lake and is situated just behind the beach area. "Anyone  who  didn't know it was there, and was running  towards  the beach, would run right into it," he said. The creek is about five feet deep. The community was saddened to learn of the death of Clifford  Lucas on  Sunday.  He  celebrated his 100th birthday on 15  July  this  past summer.  Cliff  was a lifelong resident of this  community, born  and raised on the 6th line of Warwick Township. One of his last outings was to cut the ribbon to reopen the Bank of Montreal following extensive  renovations last fall. His  100th  birthday  was quite an event. His  nieces  and  nephews organized  a  birthday celebration at his home  and  hndreds  of  his friends and neighbors attended. A heavy rainstorm didn't stop festivities. Cliff enjoyed every minute of the party. Cliff  had a fantastic memory and could recall the history of  every piece  of machinery he had ever purchased. He donated many  pieces  to the  Lambton Heritage Museum and the Watford and  District Historical Society.  The  Lambton Heritage Museum has a section  devoted  to  the Lucas  family and it features some of the donated machinery  from  the Lucas farm.
