WATFORD GUIDE ADVOCATE DECEMBER 1907
JOHN HENRY LUCAS

It is our sad duty to chronicle the death of John Henry Lucas, which sad  event took place at the family residence, Sutorville,  on  Friday morning the 20th December 1907. The deceased, who was afflicted with a cancerous growth of the  most malignant  type  last spring, consulted the  leading  specialists  in Toronto and London but without success and was early advised that  the end would be fatal. Previous  to  this Mr. Lucas had been a man of  more  than  ordinary physique and had always enjoyed most robust health. He bore his affliction with calm resignation and Christian fortitude and never once was he heard or known to murmur or complain, but on the contrary was always concerned about those in attendance upon him being broken or deprived of their rest. The subject of our notice was born in Brooke in 1858 and had resided in this neighborhood always. In 1890 he married Elizabeth, daughter of James  Higgins,  and had issue seven children, four  girls  and  three boys, all of whom survive save Leonard who died in infancy. He  is also survived by his aged parents, Andrew and Mrs.  Lucas  12 sideroad,  and his brothers Richard and Wellington of Brooke,  Sanford of  Sarnia, and Wesley of Arkona, his sisters Mrs. D.L.  McLean,  Mrs. W.J. Higgins and Mrs. David Whitehead, all of Brooke.  Mr.  Lucas  was active in all that pertained to the welfare  of  the community,  especially in the erection of Christ Church, of  which  he was the people's warden, and was deservedly esteemed and respected  by a large circle of friends and neighbors. By industry and application to his business he was able to provide a good home for his family who are left in comfortable circumstances  to mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband and father. Interment  took place at St. James cemetery and the cortege was  the largest  ever  seen in this locality, about 150 conveyances  being  in line. The services being conducted by the Rev. S.P. Irwin who was most constant  and  faithful in his attendance on the deceased  during  his long illness. The bearers were four cousins, Messrs. John William and Thomas Henry Lucas, George Higgins and Thomas Kidd and Robert Taylor and A.J. Davis close personal friends.
