DAVID GILLILAND
Guide Advocate, Watford, Issue of January 19, 1912.
DIED.  In Brooke, on Sunday, Jan. 14, 1912, David Gilliland, in his 70th year. BROOKE.  One by one the old pioneers are passing to the great beyond. This week it is our duty to record the sudden death of Mr. David Gilliland of the 14th con. of brooke, who answered the summons on Sunday evening about 8 o'clock, in the 70th year of his age. Deceased attended St. James church on Sunday morning and appeared in his usual health. In the afternoon he drove to the home of Mr. Gilbert Woods, and had tea there. On his way home the cutter was upset a short distance from the house and after gathering up the robes and cushions Mr. Gilliland walked beside the horse. When he got to the stable his grandson came out to meet him and was told by the deceased to call his father, who on arriving on the scene found the old gentleman helpless, and he expired as soon as he was gotten into the house. Deceased was born, raised and spent his life on the farm on which he died. He took a deep interest in any movement for the betterment of municipal conditions and had convictions of his own on all matters which he freely expressed. He was a member of St. James church and was widely known and respected. He served his country in the Fenian raid, and received a medal and a scrip from the government. He was married twice. His first wife was Flora A. Searson and three children survive from the union, namely, John at home, Mrs. John Manders, 4th line, Warwick, and Miss Martha, Detroit. Another daughter, Mrs. Wilson Stewart, died about ten years ago. His second wife was Ann Kidd, and they had one son, Andrew of Manitoulin. His second wife predeceased him about two years ago. WATFORD GUIDE ADVOCATE 11 MARCH 1921
ELIZA JANE (Gilliland) ACTON
DIED.  In Watford, on Monday, March 7th, 1921, Eliza Jane Gilliland, relict of the late Richard Acton, in her 89th year.  Obituary.  The late Mrs. Acton, whose maiden name was Eliza Gilliland, was born in County Armale, Ireland, in 1832, she came to Canada in 1836. She was twice married. By her first marriage to Mr. Clinton D. Knowles, she had three sons, William D. who died in 1886, Robert, who died in 1915, John of Holland, Man(itoba), and one daughter, Mrs. William Fowler of this place.  In 1874 she married the late Mr. Richard Acton, who predeceased her in 1917. Mrs. Acton has spent most of her long life of nearly 89 years in and in the vicinity of Watford and so is deserving of the name of pioneer. She was indeed a very worthy woman, kindly and self-sacrificing almost to a fault, being ready at any time to give a helping hand in time of sickness or of need. She was a devoted mother both to her own children and to those over whom she took the place of mother on her second marriage. Mrs. Acton was a faithful member of the Methodist church practically all her life and was most regular in her attendance upon the services of that church as long as health permitted. She enjoyed good health and retained the use of her faculties to a remarkable degree for one of her advanced years. A little over a week before her death which took place on Monday, March 7th, 1921, sha had the misfortune to fall in her room when preparing to retire and she broke her hip. This hastened the end for which she awaited with a joyous expectancy, being buoyed with the strength of her christian faith and cheeredby the assurance that the end here was but the meeting of her blessed Lord and Saviour and the reunion with those who had gone before to be forever with the Lord. In the early part of the winter fro a few weeks she was very ill, but had made a wonderful recovery and was able to be about again calling on her old friends and neighbours of whom she was very fond and by whom she will be much missed. The funeral took place from her daughter's home on Wednesday, March 9th. The service was in the Methodist church where her pastor, Rev. A. C. Tiffin, conducted an appropriate service. The Pallbearers were all nephews of the deceased, namely, Andrew and John Gilliland, Duncan and Joseph Acton, Jacob Saunders and John Manders. Interment took place in Watford cemetery.
