JAMES F. ELLIOT
James F. Elliot of Stoney Creek, passed away in Henderson General Hospital, Hamilton, on
Wednesday, October 21st, 1998, in his 75th year. He was the beloved husband of
Maxine (Bid) (Cooper) Elliot, and dear father of Sharon and Al MacPherson of Stoney Creek,
and Barry and Beth Elliot of Calgary, Alberta. Dear grandfather of Lisa and Allan Coombs,
Sheri Kelly, Allan and Vicki MacPherson of Stoney Creek, and James and Nickalas Elliot of
Calgary, and dear great-grandfather of Branden and Mathew Coombs of Stoney Creek. Also
survived by his five sisters Mary Millar of London, Margaret Elliot, Lillian Doyle, and
Fran Hollingsworth, all of Watford, and Dorothy Elliot of Sebring, Florida. Predeceased by
his parents Alex and Maude Elliot, and two brothers, Dick and Dee Elliot. Cremation.
A graveside service with interment of ashes in the family plot in Bethel Cemetery, Warwick
Township, will be held on Friday, October 30th at 1:00 p.m.

ALEXANDER DIXON ELLIOT
Another of Watford's well known native sons, Alexander D. Elliott, 77 passed on in St.
Joseph's Hospital, London on Tuesday morning 24 August 1965, after a brief
hospitalization. He had been in failing health in recent months at home. Son of pioneer
Watford and Warwick parents, Alex was born in Watford, lived in the West for a few brief
years, then returned to the home town and operated the Cameron Family Grocery and Footwear
for nearly 50 years until it closed two weeks ago. Surviving are his wife, formerly Maude
Cameron and a family of five daughters and three sons; Mrs. Hanley Millar (Marg) of St.
Thomas; Miss Dorothy, a Detroit Nurse; Miss Margaret; Mrs. Alvin Doyle (Lillian) and Mrs.
Russell Hollingsworth (Frances) all of Watford; Dick and A.D. of London; Jim of Stoney
Creek; also 19 grandchildren and one great grandchild; also a sister, Miss Kathleen
and sister-in-law, Miss Lottie Cameron. Resting at Harper Funeral Home, where service will
be conducted on Friday at two p.m. by Rev. Ross Cumming, of Watford United and Rev. George
Slater of Bryon United Church, with interment in the family plot at Bethel Church
Cemetery, Warwick Township. Pallbearers will be Lorne Henderson MLA Lambton East, Keith
and Don Moffatt, Robert Dobson, J. Russell McCormick of London and Alex Piggott.

Eldon Stanley Edgar, 61, of R7, Alvinston died Saturday, May 13, 1989, at C.E.E. Hospital,
Petrolia. Husband of the late Mabel Elizabeth (Werden) Edgar (1980). Son of Mrs. Mary
Edgar of Alvinston and the late Clare Edgar (1987). Father of James and his wife,
Sherry, of Alvinston and Doris of R7, Alvinston. Also survived by two grandchildren,
Michael and Brittney and one brother, Douglas, of Alvinston. Relatives and friends
were received at the Arn Funeral Home, Alvinston. The funeral service was held in Hope
United Church of which Mr. Edgar was a member of the Session, Tuesday, May 16 at 1:30 pm
with Rev. David Stedman officiating. Donation to the Hope United Church or the Heart
& Stroke Foundation would be appreciated. Interment Alvinston Cemetery.

Mrs. Robert Edgar, a lifelong resident of the 10th, con. Brooke, passed away at her home
on Wednesday, in her 60th year. She was formerly Winnie R. Varnnatter. Surviving are
her husband and a family of four sons: Richard and Eric, at home; William and
Murray, of Sarnia; two daughters, Mrs. Philip Palmer [Ruth] and Mrs. Ralph Lee [Marion]
also of Sarnia; also her aged mother Mrs. Sophia Vannatter, and two sisters, Mrs.
Russell Kerr Seaforth, Mrs. Lillian Brown Lee, Sarnia. The body rested at
Harper funeral home, Watford where service will be conducted this Friday afternoon
at two pm. by Rev. Edward Lacey, of Erie st. church, with interment in Alvinston
cemetery.

Richard James Edgar, 74, of Milton, formerly of Brooke Twp., died on Thursday 19 December
1991 at Milton District Hospital. Husband of Violet. Stepfather of Bob, Milton and
Wayne of Toronto. Grandfather of two. Brother of William of Wyoming, Murry of Sarnia, Eric
of Nova Scotia, Ruth Palmer and Marion Lee both of Sarnia. The funeral service was held at

Ivan Clare Edgar, of 559 River Street, Alvinston, passed away on Friday, August 14, 1987
at the C.E.E. Hospital, Petrolia, in his 86th year. He is survived by his wife Mary
(McLachlan) Edgar; sons Douglas and Eldon, of R.R. 7, Alvinston; one granddaughter; five
grandsons and five great- grandchildren as well as one sister. Mrs. Alice Higgins, of
Petrolia and two brothers Allan of Petrolia and Clifford of Sarnia. He was predeceased by
one brother and five sisters. Funeral services were conducted on Monday, August 17, at Arn
Funeral Home, Alvinston. Interment in Alvinston Cemetery. Mr. Edgar was a member of Brooke
Council serving six years as counsellor (1939-1944); two years as Deputy-Reeve (1945-1946)
and five years as Reeve (1947-1951) as Reeve as well as director of Lambton Mutual
(1960-1977) and for many years a well known farmer and drover.

29, 1991, in her 92nd year. She was the beloved wife of the late Clare (1987) and dear
mother of Douglas and his wife Evelyn of Alvinston, and the late Eldon Edgar and his wife
Mabel. Fondly remembered by six grandchildren: Gord of Brooke Twp., Don and his wife Sue

LEWELLA (MILLER) EDGAR
The death took place in Warwick on Thusday 7th February 1924, of Lewella Miller, beloved
wife of Robert G. Edgar, aged 67 years, 11 months and 17 days. Deceased was a daughter of
the late John and Emily Miller and had lived practically all her life in her home
neighborhood. She had been in failing health for some time but on Sunday suffered a
paralytic stroke from which she succumbed on Thursday. Deceased is survived by her
husband and two daughters; Mrs. George Routley of Watford and Mrs. Malcolm McLachlan of
Brooke, and one son George of Brooke, also two sisters; Mrs. W. Robson of Inwood and Mrs.
John Doan of Kerwood and one brother Albert Miller of Blythewood, Ont. The funeral took
place on Saturday 9th February from the family residence, lot 28 con 6 S.E.R. at 2.30 p.m.
The service which was in the church was conducted by Rev. J.H. Hosford, rector of St.
James Church, Brooke. Interment was made in St. James Cemetery. The pallbearers were six
nephews of the deceased. Athelstan Ethelford, Allan, Valerus Edgar, Gardiner Robinson and
Edgar Watson. Friends were present from Sarnia and London.

since 1929. He was retired from Imperial Oil Lts with 35 years of service. He was a member

Friday 28 July with interment in Alvinston Cemetery.

Marlene Blackstock (Nee McCorkindale), 60 years of Petrolia died at the Lambton Hospitals Group CEE Hospital, Petrolia on Tuesday 30 January 2001. Born in Wyoming, the daughter of the late John and Ila McCorkindale (nee Melton), Mrs. Blackstock worked at Glenview Golf Club and the Petrolia Legion for many years. She is survived by her husband, Bruce, two daughters, Cindy and Dave Vandenberghe and Debra Blackstock all of Petrolia, three grandsons, Jason, Jeremy and Justin, sisters, Katherine McDonald, Ila Saqwyer, Isabelle Barnes, Patricia McLachlan and Laura and Tom Barnes, June Shepherd and brothers, Allan, Archie and Norris McCorkindale. She was predeceased by brothers John, Lorne, Milton and Christie. The funeral service for Mrs. Blackstock was held at the Needham-Jay Funeral Home, Petrolia, on Friday 2 February 2001 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Philip Wilson officiating. Mrs. Donna Dobbin sang "In The Garden" during the service. Interment was in Hillsdale Cemetery, Petrolia. Edith Maud Corbett (Nee Rice), formerly of Wyoming, passed away quietly, early in the morning, on Wednesday 31 January 2001, at her residence. Fiddick's Nursing Home, Petrolia, in her 86th year. Born in Wyoming, she was the daughter of the late Frank Edward Rice and Lillian Mayford Gustin. She was the wife of the late Burton Corbett (1960). She will be remembered by her sons, Robert Corbett and his wife Arlene of Wyoming and Wayne Corbett and his wife Mary of Woodstock, her grandchildren, Adam Corbett and his wife Pam of Edmontin, Kelly (Corbett) Smith of Wyoming, Tim Corbett and his wife Fiona Somerset of London and Tammy Corbett of London and a great granddaughter, Kaitlynn Smith. Also survived by a brother, Jone Rice of Wyoming. Predeceased by her siblings, Edward and Lloyd Rice, Lillian Montgomery, Frances Hay, Laura Pauline and Ruth Roberts. Cremation has taken place. A private service of rememberance was held at the Wyoming Chapel, Broadway St. Wyoming, with interment of her cremated remains in Wyoming Cemetery. Elma Watson (nee Bridges) of Oil Springs, died at the CEE Hosptial, Petrolia on Monday 29 January 2001, in her 74th year. Born in Enniskillen Twp., the daughter of the late Wallace and Clara Bridges, Mrs. Watson was a partner with her husband in Matson's Machine Shop in Oil Springs. Mrs. Watson was a long time member and organist at Oil Springs United Church, an accomplished square dancer and round dancer, a cuer leader of the Swinging 8's (Sarnia) and the Hi Neighbours (Chatham) and a member of the Bluewater Rolling Squares Camping and Square Dance Club. She was also a member of the Lady Washington Rebekah Lodge No.337 (Oil Springs). Mrs. Watson is survived by her husband, George, two sons, Larry and Sharon Watson of Oil Springs and Murray and Maxine Watson of Watford, her grandchildren, Tina and Greg Bernetic of Fort McMurray, Gary and Melanie Watson of Sarnia and Dale and Wade Watson of Watford, great grandchildren, Misty and Alycia Watson, a sister, Aileen Cox of Petrolia and a sister-in-law, Kathryn Bridges of Oil Springs. She was predeceased by a sister Rheta Lamb (2000) and a brother, Claire Bridges (1992). Mary Jane Rawson (nee Neely), 86 years, formerly of Wyoming, died at Fiddick's Nursing Home, Petrolia on Wednesday 31 January 2001. Born in County Dunegal, Ireland, Mrs. Rawson and her husband farmed on Churchill Line for many years. Mrs. Rawson was predeceased by her husband Lyle Rawson (1988) and two brothers David (1977) and Sam Neely (1989). She is survived by numerous cousins. ABELL AT North Lamton Rest Home, Lamton Shores (Forest) on Saturday, March 17, 2001, MARY EVA MILDRED (Cairns) ABELL passed away in her 103rd year. Beloved wife of the late Gordon Abell (1979). Auntie Mary is survived by niece Edyth (Mrs. Reg Frayne) of Forest; nieces-in-law Dorothy 'Dottie' Belle (Mrs. Douglas Cairns) of Washington State and Jean (Mrs. Ernest Kalbol) of Windsor; several great and great great nieces and nephews. Auntie Mary, who formerly lived at 17 James St. S. Forest and Plympton Township, was the youngest daughter and last living child of the late James and Eva (West) Cairns. She was a member of the Tri-Centennial Club, having lived in three centuries. Predeceased by brothers Anson, Armond, Newton, Wilfrid and Joseph; sisters Samantha (Mrs. Sherman Symington) and Miss Cecelia (Jean) Cairns. MARDLIN - Myrtle Mardlin (nee Learn), 92 years, of Petrolia, died at the Lambton Hospitals
Group - Sarnia General Hospital, on Wednesday, April 18, 2001. Born in Alvinston, the
daughter of the late Charles and Minnie Learn, Mrs. Mardlin had worked as a rural mail
delivery person and in the laundry at Twilight Haven. Mrs. Mardlin is survived by her son,
Ed Mardlin and Brenda Frayne of R.R. 4, Dresden, a grandson, Jason Mardlin, sisters Jean
Hammond of Petrolia and Evelyn Wardell of Sudbury, her step mother Edith Learn and half
sister Carol and Mike Lyon all of Redbridge and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Mardlin
was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Gray Mardlin (1994) and sisters, Gladys Routley and
Helen Loxton. The funeral service for Myrtle Mardlin was held at the Needham-Jay Funeral

RAWSON - Eric Rawson, 84 years, of Petrolia, died at the C.E.E. Hospital, Petrolia, on
Sunday, April 22, 2001. Born in Manitoba, Mr. Rawson worked as a pipe fitter with Local
663 in Sarnia. Mr. Rawson was a member of St. Paul's United Church, Petrolia and a member
of Washington Masonic Lodge No. 260 A.F. & A.M. Mr. Rawson is survived by his wife,
Evelyn (nee Irwin), a daughter, Mona and Paul Gudjurgis of Brampton, brothers, Earl and
Audrey Rawson of Goderich and Kenneth and Marg Rawson of Newmarket, a sister, Beatrice
(Saladis) and Don Williams of Sarnia, sisters-in-law, Ruby Rawson and Jackie Rawson both
of Petrolia and Aldean Burgess of Sarnia and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Rawson was

PEDERSEN - Annie Pedersen (nee O'Hara), 92 years, of Petrolia, died at the C.E.E.
Hospital, Petrolia on Wednesday, April 18, 2001. Born in Enniskillen Twp., Mrs. Pedersen
and her late husband farmed on the 6th Line of Enniskillen for many years. Mrs. Pedersen
was a member of St. Paul's United and the Senior Friendship Club. Mrs. Pedersen is
survived by her sons, James and Glenda Pedersen and Wesley and Edith Pedersen all of
Petrolia, five grandsons, Larry, Wayne, Kevin, Steven and Christian and two great
grandchildren, Tova and Krista and by a sister-in-law June O'Hara of Sarnia. Mrs. Pedersen
was predeceased by her husband, Christian (Chris) Pedersen (1983), a brother Bud O'Hara
and sisters Elsie MacDonald, Elaine Mathers and Laura Wright. The funeral service for Mrs.

ELIZA ANN (Cowan) CORNELL
The death of Eliza Ann Cornell, widow of the late Dr. S.A. Cornell of Rapid City and Boissevain, Man., occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.F. Ruby, Smith's Falls, Ont., on Thurdsay last 12 July 1935. Burial was made Saturday afternoon 20 July in the family plot of St. James Churchyard, Brooke, Rev. J. H. Hosford, Rector conducting the service. The pallbearers were old friends of the family in this district; Isaac Hastings, George Mitchell, Edward J. Carroll of Watford, Ernest Cowan, Roland King and Howard Shirley of Brooke. Mrs. Corness was born 22 June 1852 in Warwick Township, the daughter of William Cowan and Ann King, his wife, both of whom were born in Ireland. After her marriage, she accompanied her husband to Manitoba, living first at Rapid City and later at Boissevain, where Dr. Cornell died. After his death, the amily returned to Watford in 1905. They removed to Winnipeg, where Mrs. Cornell lived until two years ago when failing health inducted her to make her home with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ruby in Smith's Falls. Besides Mrs. Ruby, two other daughters, Mrs. R.S. Twining of Victoria B.C. and Miss A. Carolyn Corness of Winnipeg survive. A son and a daughter, Frederick Cowan and Irene Margaret predeceased her. Two brothers and a sister,W. E. Cowan of Deloraine, Man., and George H. Cowan K.C. of Vancouver and Mrs. J.W. Maguire of Edmonton survive. Two brothers and a sister Isaac J. Cowan, Watford, John A. Cowan, Winnipeg and Mrs. R.F. Nie, Toronto having predeceased her. Mrs. Cornell's family has been intimately connected with the life of St. James Church, her grandfather Isaac Cowan being one of the founders. She, herself was the first organist.

ISABELLA A. (Kennedy) COWAN
The death of Isabella A. Kennedy aged 79 years, widow of Isaac J. Cowan, took place at Queen's Private Hospital, London on Thursday 11 Aug 1938. A year ago Mrs. Cowan had a fall from which she never recovered. She had lived with her daughter, Mrs. Kenton Mitchell for the past eleven years. Mrs. Cowan was born in Brooke Township and taught school at Watford for a number of years. Mr. Cowan predeceased her eleven years ago. Surviving members are two daughters, Mrs. Clifford Lucas and Mrs. Kenton Mitchell of Warwick, one sister, Mrs. A.P. Chalmers of Toronto, and one brother W.H. Kennedy, barrister of Whitby. The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon with a short service at the home of Mrs. K. Mitchell, followed by a service in St. James Church with Rev. J.H. Hosford in charge. The pallbearers were Clarence Case, Thomas a Woods, Alexander Westgate, E.J. Carroll, Ernest Cowan, Roland J. King. Interment was in St. James Cemetery, Brooke.

LILA (Gilroy) COWAN
Following an illness of several years Mrs. Lila Gilroy Cowan of Alvinston, died in Petrolia on Sunday. The funeral will be held from the family residence at Alvinston at 2 p.m. Wednesday, with interment in St. James' Cemetery, Watford. Born in Port, Hope, Ont., on July 10, 1870, Mrs. Cowan spent the early years of her life at her home in Alvinston, where she was married to E. J. Cowan in 1896. They went to Japan together where they resided for a number of years. In 1906 they returned to America and resided ; in Sarnia, New York and Alvinston. Following the death of her husband Mrs. Cowan continued to reside in the village where she took an active part in the work of the Anglican Church and was much interested in all community projects. Surviving are three children, Mrs. John Thoen of Ponca City, Okla., Edward Hayden of Denver, Col.. and Miss Helen of Detroit. A brother Harry of Alvinston and four grandchildren also survive.

ELIZA (Cowan) POWELL
Mrs. Henry Powell, a well known resident of Sarnia, died on 24 May 1929 in her 67th year. Although born in Brooke Township Mrs. Powell had resided in Sarnia practically all her life and was actively connected with the work of St. George's Anglican Church. Mrs. Powell was a daughter of the late Alexander Cowan of Watford. Mrs Powell's husband predeceased her some time ago. She is survived by one daughter, Pauline and three sisters, Mrs. A.J. Kelly of Watford, Mrs. (Dr) H.N. McCordick of Edson, Alta, Mrs. (Dr) R.K. Anderson of Milton and a brother E.J. Cowan of Alvinston. Funeral services were conducted at the family residence Monday afternoon. Interment was made in Bothwell Cemetery.

JOHN ALEXANDER COWAN
Death occurred at his home on North St. about eight o'clock this morning of John Alexander Cowan, a well known life long resident of this district following brief illness from Influenza. Mr. Cowan had not been in robust health for the past few years but been able to take care of his service station business up to a week ago when he was taken down with the flu. His dernise was not expected and came as a shock to his relatives and friends. The late Mr. Cowan born of a pioneer family in Brooke township when timbering was the principal industry in the district. As a young man he helped clear his father's farm and then secured a position in the stave mill then operating at Weidman where he learned to be an expert operative of the stave cutting machines which manufactured the materials for the barrel industry of the time. During this period of pioneer settlement Mr. Cowan lived through many stirring times and could vividly recall numerous fights to clear the settlement of outlaws and a settlement of negroes who had located near Weidman. Mr. Cowan came to Petrolia about 1895 to take a position in the then thriving ash business of Newell Healey in which the wood ashes were collected under a barter system and manufactured into soap and other products. Mr. Healey was succeded .by John Joynt who later sold out to Mr. Cowan, he having conducted this business up to about twelve years ago. For the past three years Mr. Cowan had worked at the service station in the Normandy block which he was conducting in partnership with his son, Alex Cowan at the time of his death. Mr. Cowan was twice married, his first wife having heen Miss Louise Smith, who predeceased him by more that forty years. In 1900 he was married to Miss Katharine Osborne, who survives. Deceased is survived by five daughters and two sons, Mrs. William Bailey of Enniskillen, Mrs. Herb Smith of London, Alex Cowan of Petrolia, Miss Agnes Cowan at home; Harry Cowan of Brownsville; Mrs. Bert Goodie (Edith) of Wyoming and Miss Gertrude at home. One brother Samuel Cowan of the 6th line Enniskillen also survives. Deceased was a member of the Petrolia Baptist Church and had been for some years a member of the Petrolia Fire Department. The funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon with services at his late resicence at 2.00 o'clockm conducted by Rev. J.W. Hisey of the Petrolia Baptist Church. Petrolda, April 27.-(Special)- John Alexander Cowan died at his home early today following a brief illness. Born in Brooke Township he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs.. William Cowan. For many years he lived near Inwood and came to Petrolia 46 years ago where he was employed by the Newel Healey Ash Company until it ceased operation so years ago. He was a former member of the Petrolia, volunteer fire brigade. He married twice and his first wife, whom he married in 1889, predeceased him about 40 years ago. In 1901 he married Catherine Osbourne, of Petrolia who survives along with two daughters by his first marriage. Mrs. William. Bailey of Enniskillen Township and Mrs. Herbert Smith of London, three daughters by second marriage, Agnes and Gertrude Cowan at home and Mrs. Bert Goudie of Wyoming; two sons Alex and Harry of Petrolia and a brother Samuel Cowan of Enniskillen. The funeral will be held from his residence North Street on Saturday afternoon at 1.30 o'clock. The Rev. J.W. Hisey of the First Baptist Church will officiate. Mr. John Henry (Harry) Cowan age 73 of North Street, Petrolia, (Retired employee of Shell Oil) passed away at Victoria Hospital on 1 September 1980.
