CHARLES LUCAS
Charles Lucas, 65, died last Saturday morning in a fire that badly damaged his King St., residence at Arkona. Mr. Lucas lived alone in the building which he owned. The front part which was a vacant store, was not damaged as firemen confined the blaze to Mr. Lucas' living quarters where he was found near the back door of the premises. The building was covered with a metal siding. Kenneth Evans, Arkona volunteer department chief, said the fire apparently started at about 9.30 a.m. and was "going strong" when firemen arrived. Their search was hampered by intense heat, and the body was not discovered until about 10 a.m. according to Chief Evans. Mr. Lucas was a bookkeeper at Brown's Feed Mills, Arkona, and is survived by a brother, Arnold, in that village. Fire Marshal Don Campbell investigated the blaze early this week but according to Coroner Dr. A.M. Calder, of Forest, there is apparently no reason why an inquest should be held into the death. At press time no report was available from the Fire Marshal. Funeral service was held Monday afternoon at the Douglas Gilpin Funeral Home, Thedford, with Rev. John Bonham, of Arkona United Church officiating. Pallbearers included John and Irwin Lucas, Cecil Batten, Tom Donaldson, Charles Page and Harold Sercombe with burial in Arkona Cemetery.

WATFORD GUIDE ADVOCATE 9 FEBRUARY 1917
MR. D.L. McLEAN
One of the earliest settlers of the Tenth Concession West
Brooke, passed away on Sunday the 4th February 1917, when Mr. D.L.
McLean passed into the great beyond. The end came with startling suddenness,
Mr. McLean having been in Alvinston within a little more than a week of his
death. Mr. McLean was one of the best known and most respected men
of Brooke and was well known in Alvinston, his mother, the
late Mrs. Yates Ferguson having lived there for many years, and died only a
few years ago. He was for a quarter of a century a leading elder in St.
Andrew's Presbyterian Church and was one of the organizers of that
congregation. His life was one of steady exertion and he had the satisfaction of
seeing his family grow up and settle in the neighborhood, six of his family
of nine children having married and settled within driving
distance of the old home. His wife, who survives him, is a daughter of the late Joseph
Lucas. In the passing of Mr. McLean there passes from us one of those sterling
men whose life enriches any community and who will be missed
equally in his home, his church and his neighborhood. Having been for many
years an elder in St. Andrews, the funeral service was conducted
in the church of which he had been so long a leader and father, his empty pew
and the pulpit being draped in black, while the choir rendered suitable music. Interment
took place in Alvinston Cemetery and in spite of the cold was very largely attended, many
of Mr. McLean's old comrades from East Brooke being present to show their esteem of an
honored friend. The bearers were Richard, Wesley, Sanford and Wellington
Lucas, David Whitehead and William Higgins. Mr. McLean is survived by his
widow, Emily Lucas, and nine children, three sons, Joseph, who lives on the
10th cooncession of Enniskillen, and Andrew and Dan at home, and six
daughters, Mrs. W. J. Johnston, whose husband is deputy-reeve of Brooke: Mrs.
Alex McDonald; Mrs. Thomas Clark, Mrs. Fisher, Mrs. Minielly of South Plympton
and Miss Lena at home. He is survived also by one sister Mrs. D. McCaw of
Enniskillen. The family has the sympathy of the community in their great sorrow.
(Correction to this: His wife is the daughter of Andrew Lucas and Eliza Acton not Joseph
as stated).

JOHN McMAHON
The township of Plympton loses an old pioneer and a much respected resident in the death
of Mr. John McMahon, which occurred at his residence, lot 11, in the first concession, on
Saturday the 18th inst., at the mature age of 72 years. It appears that on the 18th inst.,
Mr. McMahon enjoyed a hearty dinner, and sat down afterwards, reading for an hour or so.
He got up and went out to water the cattle. He pumped a trough full of water, and while
crossing over to let out the cattle he dropped dead. His son Albert, coming out of the
barn about a minute later discovered the body and raising it, called for assistance. Dr.
Newell was quickly summoned and pronounced the cause of death heart failure. The deceased,
who was an uncle of Mr. W. H. McMahon, ex-Reeve of the township, was born in the County of
Armagh, Ireland, and with his father emigrated to Canada in his early youth. The family
settled in the vicinity of Kingston. About 30 years ago the deceased came to Plympton,
which was at that time an unbroken forest. He also took an active part in the rebellion of
37 and 38. In politics he was a life-long staunch Conservative, a personal
acquaintance and faithful admirer of the late Sir Jno. A. Macdonald. He lived a good
conscientious life, and died at peace with all men. An aged widow, four sons and two
daughters, are left to mourn the loss of an affectionate husband and father whose every
thought was their welfare. The Tizer joins the entire community in the fullest
sympathy for the bereaved family.
SARNIA OBSERVER 21 JANUARY 1904
ALBERT JOHNTON
Albert Johnton, G. T. R. Fireman Killed. His death ther result of a collision at the Grand
Trunk Tunnel Yards. The east end of the Grand Trunk Tunnel yards was the scene of a
disastrous collision last night shortly before 9 o'clock as the result of which one young
man lost his life, while the Grand Trunk Railway Co. suffered a monetary loss up in the
thousands. The collision was between a double header freight train coming west on the old
main line of the G.T.R. and a freight train pulling out of the tunnel yards east bound on
the London division. The latter train was just passing the switch at the intersection of
the new double track with the old main line, when the double- header freight come bowling
along and crashed into the middle of this train. The two engines on the double-header were
wrecked and thrown from the rails together with about fourteen freight cars loaded with
coal and other commodities. The loss to the company will be quite extensive. The old main
line of the Grand Trunk was blocked until nearly noon to-day with the wrecked engines and
cars. It is claimed that the responsiblity for the accident rests with the engineer of the
front engine on the west bound train, as the semaphere was set against him. This warning,
it appears was disregarded and the doubleheader ran past the switch and crashed into the
outgoing east bound freight with results as stated above. The engines on the double header
were nos. 764 & 708. Engineer Wm. Kerr and fireman Walter Walker wre in charge of the
former while engineer Neil Currie and the unfortunate young man Albert Johnston as fireman
were on the second engine. The engine on the east bound train was # 747 and was in charge
of engineer Wm. O'Brian and fireman Gilbert Taylor all of Sarnia. When the impact came it
drove the tender of the second engine up against the boiler and fireman Johnston was
caught between the tender and the boiler. Here he remained for over an hour and a half,
suffering untold agonies, while his fellow workmen did everything in their power to
release him, but without avail. Dr. Henderson was summoned and worked faithfully in vain
efforts to keep the young man alive and also to relieve his sufferings. The huge timbers
& irons of the wrecked engine and tender caught Johnston about the limbs and broke
both legs, besides crushing his left foot and abdomen. He was conscious for nearly an hour
and a half & begged piteously to be released. His appeals were heartrending and strong
men shed tears as they worked with all their strength at their command to remove the heavy
timbers and irons that pinioned their fellow employee whose life was fast ebbing away.
Their efforts to release him before death came were unavailing however as his spirit took
its flight about five minutes before the heavy engine & tender were hauled apart by
the wrecking engine. While the unfortunate young man was pinioned in his death trap he
asked for a priest & Rev. Father Costello repaired to the scene of the accident with
all possible haste. As the Rev. Father administered spiritual consolation to the dying man
his fellow employees and others who had congragated about the scene of the accident stood
with bared heads as the spitit of their comrade was preparing to meet his maker. Shortly
after the rites of the church had been administered the sufferer lapsed into
unconsciousness and a few minutes later he was cold in death. When the body was released,
kind hands lifted it tenderly and conveyed the remains to the Tunnel station. Later the
body was removed to the undertaking establishment of G.L. Phillips. Deceased was a young
man of about 30 years. He was married and leaves a bride of a few months to mourn his
untimely end. " There was an inquest into his death (no more info known at this
time).
