Mrs. Lucinda Gault, widow of the late Robert Gault of the 2nd  line Warwick,  passed  away  to the home eternal on Saturday  last  at  the residence  of her daughter, Mrs. Hamilton Taylor, of  North  Plympton, after a long illness borne with patience and great courage. Mrs.  Gault was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hume, who  were pioneer settlers on the 2nd line of Warwick, and was in her 87th  year when the end came. During  her long and useful life she won and held the  respect  and conficence of the whole community and the loving loyalty of her  children. She  recalled vividly the early days when the  itinerant  preachers including  Uncle Joe Little of blessed memory, preached the gospel  in her  father's  house. There the present Zion Church  was  formed,  her father and later her husband, Robert Gault, being prominent members. From her earliest recollection she attended the Church and  engaged quietly and effectively in all its activities. Her  name is an ointment poured forth and her influence  abides  in the  lives of her family of whom 3 sons, John W; Thomas A; and  Robert and 1 daughter Mrs. Taylor survive, who today bless her memory. The funeral service took place on Monday 1 August at the  residence of Mr. Hamilton Taylor, with whom the last 5 years was spent. The Rev. S.M. WATFORD GUIDE ADVOCATE 4 FEBRUARY 1905
 JOHN HOLBROOKE

One of the oldest, if not the  oldest, resident of Canada passed away yesterday in the person of John Holberbrooke, aged 109 years. The deceased was born in the County of Carlow, Ireland, in the year 1796.  He  came to Canada at the age of 20, taking up  land  at  Smith Falls.  Eight  years later he came west to Lambton,  settling  in  the Township of Brooke, where he lived up to the time of his death. He was remarkably  vigorous until the past two years, when he  was  afflicted with loss of sight. His memory was quite accurate. At the age of 70, he twice walked the entire distance between Brooke and  Smith Falls. In his younger days he was noted for  his  strength, and on one occasion he loaded up a wagon with a number of barrels that  two ordinary men would be unable to handle. He  leaves  a family of four sons: Thomas of  Michigan;  Edward  of Petrolia; and Henry and John of Brooke.

WATFORD GUIDE ADVOCATE 3 MARCH 1905
JOHN HOLBROOK

The death in Brooke Township, Lambton County, on 3rd February 1905, of  Mr.  John Holbrook in his one hundred and ninth  year  brought  to notice  one of the most remarkable cases of longevity recorded in  the history of Canada. Many instances are recorded of people attaining a great age, but on investigation they were generally found to be greatly exaggerated. The age  of the subject of this sketch, however, is anthenticated both  by records and personal knowledge so that there is no room for doubt left that  he had crossed the century mark and had nearly closed the  first decade of a second. Born  in the good old County of Kilkenny, Ireland, in the  town  of Coolcullen  in  October 1796 he came of long lived stock,  his  father being 110 and his mother 102 at the time of their deaths. He  was married in the County of Carlow, Ireland, when about 30  to Martha Lett, who predeceased him about 23 years ago. Shortly  after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Holbrook immigrated  to Canada,  settling  in  the Township of Beckwith,  near  Ottawa.  After remaining there a few years they removed to the Township of  Montague,   near  Smiths  Falls,  remaining there until the year  1847,  when  the family  came  west to Brooke Township, Lambton County, where  Mr.  H., took up land and resided to the time of his death. Although not a large man, he was unusually active and vigorous, and thought nothing of making a journey hundreds of miles on foot. On more than  one  occasion  he walked the entire distance from  his  home  in Brooke  to Kingston and Smiths Falls, and in two days covered  a  distance of 110 miles, a performance many professional pedestrains  would find difficult to repeat under similar circumstances. Brooke  at  that  time was a dense forest and  the  early  settlers experienced  all the hardships incident to the life of a pioneer in  a new country. Nearly all the neighbors of the early days, William Hume, John  and Henry Hume, Robert Gilleland, William Whitcraft, Mark Miller, John and Alexander  Kelly and many others have long since passed to  their  reward. Mr. Holbrook has frequenty tramped through a blazed trail, carrying a hundred weight of flour from Alvinston. Twice he had the  misfortune to  lose  his way in the woods, and was obliged to light a  fire  with flint  and punk to protect himself from the howling wolves  that  were very numerous in those days. Many stories are told of his physical strength. On one occasion  on a wager he lifted 3 barrels of pork each weighing 200 lbs., and  threw them into a sleigh. He was offered one of the barrels for the feat but declined.  On another occasion he loaded up a wagon with salt  barrels that two ordinary men were unable to handle.  His services were in great demand at logging bees, and he frequently  left home with his yoke of oxen on Monday morning, and  would  not return  until the following Saturday. That his services in  this  line were appreciated was shown when it came to erecting a barn on his  own farm,  when  people came from 20 miles to assist in the work.  He  was very zealous in any work he undertook. During  the  stirring times of the McKenzie rebellion in  1837,  he shouldered his musket and joined the forces called out to suppress the rebellion.  He  took  part in the battle of the  Windmill,  where  his companion,  the late Thomas Oakes, of Brooke, was thrust  through  the body with a bayonet, but lived for many years afterwards. His declining years were spent at the home of his son John. For the past year he had been afficted with deafness and blindness, but  never gave us his active and industrious habits. He was a heavy user of tobacco, both smoking and chewing. He always enjoyed excellent health, worked hard and never had the services of  a physician, and up to a short time before his death insisted on  sawing and splitting the wood required for the house, his sense of touch  and judgment of distance being almost marvelous. Only last fall he assisted in picking apples in the orchard, having constructed a stick with a hook attached with which he would pull the limbs toward him and remove the fruit. In politics he was a life long Liberal and voted at every  election up to four years ago. He  was a faithful member of the Methodist Church for the  past  45 years, and his last words were an expression of gratitude to his Maker for sparing him so long taking him home without an ache or a pain. The  remains  were laid away at Mt. Carmel cemetery on  Monday  6th February, the service being conducted the Rev. P. Myers, pastor of the Brooke Methodist Church. His 4 sons acted as pallbearers. He  is survived by a family of 5 sons; Thomas of  Croswell,  Mich., aged  79  years; James, Henry, Edward and John and 2  daughters,  Mrs. William  Watson of Manitoba and Mrs. James Garvey of  Fostoria,  Mich. Two  daughters and a son died in youth and one son Robert a few  years ago. Thirty-two grandchildren and twenty five great grandchildren  are alive.

WATFORD GUIDE ADVOCATE MARCH 1906
ALMA HOLBROOK

It  is  our painful duty to record the death of Alma  G.,  youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Holbrook, of Brooke, who departed  this life on Thursday 7th March at the early age of 18 years. The funeral took place on Saturday to Mt. Carmel cemetery, and  was largely  attended, the service being conducted by the Rev.  Mr.  Coupland, who preached a very impressive and appropriate sermon from Prov. 27-10. The  pallbearers were intimate friends and class mates of  the  deceased,  namely;  Misses  Loretta Roche,  Lizzie  McChesney,  Gertrude Fuller,  Florence Lovell, Lulu Howden and Flo McNeil. The  casket  was covered with many beautiful floral emblems, including wreaths from the High  School  students, sheaf from L. D. Cadwell and Miss  Roche,  and bouquets  from  Mr. and Mrs. E.D. Swift, Mrs. Ed.  Holbrook  and  Miss Laura Jackson.  Alma  had  for the last three years been a student at  the  Watford H.S., where she showed marked ability, almost attaining to genius, and gave  promise of a brilliant career. At school, as on  all  occasions, she exhibited those beautifyl qualities which made her beloved by both teachers and pupils. During her long illness, Alma showed the utmost patience and cheerfulness  and was perfectly resigned and prepared for  the  inevitable, and, although the end was not unexpected, it came as a severe shock to a host of friends, who have heard of her early demise with the keenest regret. The  early  taking  away of this beautiful young  life  fills  many hearts with deepest sorrow, and we can but extend to the bereaved  the deepest sympathy of all, and the consolation that the grave is not the end  of all, and that "somewhere in this vast universe, she lives  to-day and sees with clearer sight the face of God."
