PETROLIA NEWSPAPER 8 FEBRUARY 1934
THOMAS JAMES WILSON
It is again our sad duty to chronicle the passing of an old
and familiar friend in the person of Thomas James Wilson, of Lot 23 Con.
10, Enniskillen, whose death took place in the CEE Hospital, Petrolia on Thursday
evening 1st February 1934. The late Mr. Wilson, or Uncle Jim, as he was so well and
favourably known to all the children, was born in Brooke Twp., on 3 May 1861
and with his parents, the late John and Maria Wilson, moved to
Kerwood where he grew up into vigorous manhood. For several years he was a
trusted employee of the old Grand Trunk Railway system and shortly after
his marriage to Maria Saunders in 1883, he moved to the 10th line of
Enniskillen where, for the past 50 years he had resided a highly respected and
honoured citizen. An exceptionally sad occurence in his life was the accidental
death of his wife in 1893, who was struck and instantly killed by a
G.T.R. Express at Kerwood during a blinding snowstorm. The shock
of this fatality cast a shadow of gloom over his remaining years from which he
never fully recovered. His nearest surviving relatives are two nieces, Mrs.
Mary Randall and Mrs. Rheta Anderson of Eniskillen, and
two nedphews, William Wilson of London and William Wilson of Petrolia,
all his brothers and sisters having predeceased him several years ago. His demise is
mourned by all of his old community as he always took a kindly part in its many
social activities. For many years he served as trustee of the local School board and
did his best in adding to the comforts of the children, and in advancing the cause of
Education. In politics he was a staunch Conservative, but was broad
in his criticisms and public spirited in his many endeavors. The funeral
was held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday 3rd February from the parlors of
Mr. A. Richmond, Petrolia and was impressively conductedd by the Rev. W.H. Robarts
to a large concourse of friends. At the graveside was a large circle of
relatives and friends who were waiting to pay their last respects
to a departed comrade. The pallbearers were Thomas and David Clark, John
and Joseph Cunningham, William Pearson and Robert Henderson, all close and immediate
friends of the deceased. The many floral emblems bore silent tribute to the
high esteem in which he has always been held by the sorrowing community.
Interment took place in the family plot at St. James
Cemetery, Brooke.
