JOHN HELPS
Death came with terrible suddenness yesterday to John Helps, who with his family resided on East Campbell street. During the afternoon, Mr. Helps, accompanied by his young daughter, went to the gravel pit near the fair grounds on the London Road to procure a load of gravel. While he was engaged shovelling the gravel into his wagon he suddenly dropped to the ground and expired almost immediately. A messenger was sent to town for medical assistance and Dr. Henderson responded to the call. The doctor worked over the unfortunate man for about an hour in a vain endeavor to revive him. Death was due to heart failure. The deceased was 74 years and 2 months of age and leaves a wife and family to mourn his sudden taking. The funeral will take place from the family residence, Campbell street east on Wednesday 3rd August at 2:30 p.m. Burial in Lakeview Cemetery Sarnia.

SAMUEL HELPS
SAD ACCIDENT: A sad accident occurred on the Lake Shore road, leading to Plympton, on Tuesday the 27 inst., which has resulted in the death of a promising young man, 17 years of age, named Samuel Helps, son of Mr. Henry Helps, one of the old settlers in the Township of Plympton. The circumstances connected with the affair, as we have been reliably informed are as follows: On the day in question Mr. Helps and his wife, with the young man referred to, were on their way from Plympton to Sarnia with a load of oats. They were also accompanied by another lad, a son of a neighbor. Since it was a cold day, Mr. Helps and his son had got off the wagon about three miles from town, for the purpose of warming themselves by walking, the young man walking alongside of the wagon with the lines in his hand, for the purpose of guiding the team, and his father following behind. Mrs. Helps and the other lad remaining in the wagon. This arrangement had not continued for long, when a buggy belonging to Mr. Faithorn overtook them at a rapid rate and was driven past with such speed as to startle Mr. Helps' team so that the young man in endeavoring to control them, by some means was thrown down between the fore and hind wheels of the wagon, the latter pressing obliquely over his loins and chest and crushing him so severely that his recovery was rendered hopeless. He was taken up with difficulty and brought in to Mr. Belchambers Hotel, and medical assistance at once produred, but his injuries were of so severe a character that little could be done to alleviate them. He lingered on in great distress till the morning of Saturday last, when death put a period to the sufferings. The sad affair ought to operate as a caution to parties driving on public highways while having occasion to pass other teams to do so causiously and slowly, for there can be no question that the furious mannin in which the buggy referred to was driven past Mr. Helps' wagon, was the cause of this young man losing his life. It is said moreover that those who were the cause of the accident, although aware of its occurance, did not stop to render any assistance, but left the aged father and mother, with the lad before referred to, to get their wounded son into the wagon and brought to Sarnia as best they might.

DAVID LUNAM
After six weeks of failing health, David Lunam, St., of the
9th Con., Plympton, departed this life on Friday the 1st inst., at
the ripe age of 87 years, 6 months and 20 days. Deceased had been in frail
health for some time, but not until six weeks ago was he seriously
ill. After taking to his bed he kept getting weaker and weaker each day
until death claimed its victim. He was born in Berwickshire, Scotland, in
1810, living with his parents until about the year 1837, when he was married to Miss
Ann Cairns. In 1844 they came to Canada and direct to the township of Plympton,
first settling on a farm on the lake shore, but only remained there a short time
when they moved to the present homestead. Deceased leaves a wife and a family of
eight to mourn the loss of a beloved husband and father, namely, David, James and
Andrew, Plympton; Mrs. D. Gillatly and Mrs. John Gillatly, Plympton; Mrs.
A. Murray, Forest; Mrs. John Page, Enniskillen, and Mrs. Geo.
Lunam, Detroit. Also thirty one grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.
He was a life long and faithful member of the Presbyterian church, and was of
a quiet, kind-natured disposition, ready at all times, when able, to assist a neighbor or
one in need. Indeed it was hard to find a better known or more thought of pioneer in
the township, and it was surprising to anyone to hear him tell of the terrible
hardships encountered by the first settlers of Plympton. He tried to
follow the golden rule, and was never heard to utter an unkind word or
known to do an unkind act towards any person. The funeral took place on Monday
afternoon to the Knox church cemetery, Camlachie, and the remains were
followed to their last resting place by a very large number of relatives and
friends, thereby testifying to the high esteem in which deceased was held by those
who knew him, and the cortege numbering nearly one hundred rigs. The
pall-bearers were six grand children, namely: David Murray,
Battle Creek, Mich.; Adam Murray, Oil Springs; John and
Alexander Gillatly and H. Helps, Plympton and D. Page, Enniskillen. The
service at the house and grave were conducted by the Rev. R.
Drinnan of Camlachie. Much sympathy is expressed for the bereaved wife and
family, and especially for the former, who is seriously ill,
having taken down about the same time as her late husband.

sixteenth year, she married Mr. Helps and the young couple settled on a bush
farm to hew out a home for themselves in the days when everything was a
wild winderness, and blazed trees were used as guides for roads. Mr. and Mrs.
Helps lived on the farm for forty-five years, moving first to the
village of Oil Springs where they remained three years, afterwards coming to Wyoming
where they have since resided. Mrs. Helps was the mother of thirteen children

devoted Christian life for years and will be greatly missed by a large circle of
